Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker issued a landmark decision today by overturning Proposition 8, finding that California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage violates the federal constitutional rights of gay people.

As awesome as this is, I wouldn't get too excited just yet...we're likely to see this debate go all the way to the Supreme Court, and the shitstorm will probably get pretty ugly by then.

The fact that this issue turned out the way it did in California in the 21st century is pretty sad.

Still, mad props to the judge for making the right call.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Vaugh Walker, one of three openly gay federal judges in the country, gave opponents of the controversial Proposition 8 ballot a major victory.

Gay couples waving rainbow and American flags outside the courthouse cheered, hugged and kissed as word of the ruling spread.

In addition to other articles stating that the judge should have removed himself from this trial (for being gay). Because you know, a straight person would be a much better judge for this issue. Right? Right?
