Chapter 1
It doesn't mind her, how Kumi would always flood her with I love yous everyday to the point that even her phone would start vibrating like crazy from her mails whenever classes start and they have to depart from each other and head off to their respective classrooms- she enjoys it even, since this shameless senpai of hers would often exaggerate things on her messages, like saying how their teacher looks like she’d spit out fire from anger soon, but even if she’ll get burn, she’ll still love Yuria, or how Yukko snores so loud when she sleeps that it beats the school’s PA, but her love for Yuria is still louder than it.
The said crazy senpai would always add the “My love for you is greater though” line at the end… And it was cheesy, really. But Yuria doesn’t hate it, nor does she hate Kumi. Actually, Yuria likes her a lot, especially when she’s serious. But then again, the times when Kumi becomes completely serious is rare. It’s alluring though, the serious Kumi. And Yuria likes it a lot.
“Yuria, do you want to watch a movie with me tomorrow?” Shiori suddenly broke the group’s talk about ghost stories and such with the sudden question, ignoring the others’ questioning looks as she turned her attention completely to Yuria. “My little sister gave me the two spare tickets she had since her friends couldn’t go. So, are you up for it?” she smiled, though the smile on her face obviously hinted a please say yes! on it.
Given with not much choice anyway, Yuria smiled at her and nodded her head, “Sure,” She could almost see how the usual smile Yukiko wear fade away as soon as she answered by the corner of her eyes. Though she felt like apologizing inwardly, Yuria was more than sure that Shiori would invite the half-spanish to come along too if she asks. Shiori’s only doing this to make her jealous, after all.
“What about us?” A small frown formed on Kumi’s face. “I thought we were friends, Shiorin.”
“That’s right!” Yukiko butted in, “We’ll just buy our own tickets, right Kumi?”
“Right!”
“Okay, okay! Fine then, the four of us. Tomorrow. Let’s meet by the station at one.”
In an instant, Yukiko and Kumi turned to each other with victorious smiles plastered on their faces. Yuria continued on watching them in silence, the smile she had on now completely gone as she let out a sigh. Tomorrow’s going to be a tiresome day, for sure.
-
“Eh?! What do you mean you and Yukko can’t come?!” Standing up from her seat and unconsciously slamming a hand on her study table, Yuria half yelled at the phone she was pressing against her ear, the smile on her face she had earlier from imagining a rabbit run around a field now in a total wreck.
I’m really sorry Yuria, Yukko suddenly got a fever and her mother asked if I could take care of her for awhile since she’ll be out for work…
“No. That’s a lie. That’s definitely a lie!”
C-Come on, Kumi will still be there with you. I’ve already asked my little sister to give the tickets to Kumi. She should have them now.
Pressing her lips into a thin line, Yuria shifted her eyes towards the phone, with them narrowing at it suspiciously, “Don’t tell me… This is a set-up, isn’t it!? If Kumi’s not a part of this then you and Yukko must have planned all of this. Shiorin, how co-”
Ah! Blood is dripping from Yukko’s nose! Sorry, I have to go now! Bye!
“You don’t get a bloody nose just because of a fever! You’re definitely lying aren’t you-” Hearing the sound of the phone disconnecting, Yuria heaved out a sigh, staring at it afterwards before muttering out bitterly. “What’s with this overly clichéd event, jeez…”
--
Believing that Kumi is a victim of Shiori and Yukko’s evil plan as well, Yuria managed to drag her feet towards the meeting place. It’s Kumi anyway. Even if it was just the two of them, she knew that her senpai would find a way to enjoy themselves, and save them from any awkward silence. Hopefully.
“I wonder if I came a little bit too early…” She said to herself as soon as the station was within her sight, checking the digital clock on her phone soon after as she carelessly forgot about her wristwatch out of panic (at the thought that she would be alone with her slightly crazy of a senpai) and anger (thanks to Yukko and Shiori).
30 minutes. She was 30 minutes earlier than the assigned meeting time. Not that bad if ever she’s the one who arrived first. Better than being late at the very least.
Why is she even worried about getting late to begin with? If she wants to, she could go there 2 hours later than planned, and would still be sure that Kumi would still be waiting there, waving at her happily with a huge smile plastered on her face while shouting her name. And while apologizing for being late, the older girl would probably shake it off with the overly used “I just got here myself” line.
Kumi is one hell of a kind girl if you think about it, after all. Kind and oblivious.
“Oh, Yuria! You’re surprisingly early.”
With the familiar voice of her senpai filling her ears, Yuria lifted her head up a little to check, removing her eyes from her phone and up to the direction where the voice came from. And sure enough, Kumi was standing right in front of her, with a silly smile on her face and her right hand slightly lifted up as a form of greeting.
“H-Hey.” She blinked repeatedly; a little bit surprised that Kumi was there already. “I could say the same thing to you, senpai.”
“There you go again calling me senpai. We’re friends aren’t we? Just call me Kuumin already.” Kumi frowned a little, before grinning again not a second later, “I got here an hour? Or so earlier. But that doesn’t matter anymore. The movie won’t be starting until three, so we have some free time. Is there anything you’d like to do, Yuria?”
An hour earlier?! Yuria’s eyes widened at the thought. Such huge patience she must have if she could live with waiting for more than an hour like that in that case. Unless she’s bluffing of course. But then again, if it’s Kumi, that does sound a little bit believable. “Well… I haven’t eaten lunch yet so… is it okay if we eat first?”
There it is again. The feeling of nervousness.
“Sure. I haven’t eaten myself yet.”
“Came here a little bit too early for lunch?”
“…Yeah.”
“Idiot.” Smiling a little at Kumi, Yuria held her hand out to her a little. “The moment we step out of the train, it’s bound to get crowded, so let’s hold hands just in case, senpai.”
Kumi, smiling back in exchange, nodded her head a little as she obediently took Yuria’s hand, holding onto it firmly. “Kuumin.” She replied. Hoping that Yuria would finally stop being so formal to her. To her dismay, though, the younger girl only stuck her tongue out at her mockingly in response. “So uncute.”
“Says the senpai who yells out that I’m cute on a daily basis.”
“Oh, that? I actually meant the opposite.”
“Hey!”
--
The two of them sat on a racing simulator, shouting every now and then as they tried to drive past each other and laughing at each other whenever they do. They had just finished eating from a family restaurant Kumi strongly recommended. And much to Yuria’s dismay, the older girl managed to sneak her way into paying for the bill before they left, excusing her self by saying she was heading to the rest room when in truth, she was actually heading to the cashier to pay.
Of course, not that happy on the fact that she did such a thing without telling her beforehand, Yuria insisted that she pay back by paying all the games they were going to play in the arcade they saw as soon as they left the said restaurant. Guitar Master, a basketball game, Tekken, Dance dance revolution and now the racing simulator. Those were the games they’ve played so far, wasting two good hours with silly grins plastered on their faces.
“Alright, I won!” Kumi pumped her fist up in the air.
“No fair, you pushed me down the cliff!”
“Sorry, sorry. I got too indulged with the race that I ended up playing a little bit too seriously.” Laughing a little, she gave Yuria’s head a quick pat before stand up from the simulator.
Frowning, Yuria tried to look as angry as she could, pushing Kumi’s hand off of her head afterward which she only laughed in response. “Cheater. I’ll beat you next time, just you wait.” She mumbled to herself before standing up as well while flipping her phone open, checking the digital clock on it. “We only have thirty minutes left before the movie starts, should we head there now?”
“Ah, before we leave…”
“Hm?”
Kumi shifted her eyes to the side a little, rubbing the back of her neck while pointing towards one of the purikura stands by the arcade’s exit. “Can we take a picture? You know, a souvenir that we played in an arcade together. Of course, if you don’t want too, I don’t mind. I mean, I don’t want to fo-”
Eh… So she has a shy side in her after all. Yuria couldn’t help but laugh at her self at the thought. Her usually shameless senpai, talking to her in an oh so shyly manner while avoiding eye contacts. What a change. “Sure, let’s do it then.” She cut her off in the middle of her ramblings, watching the older girl pause for more than a second with her mouth slightly agape while holding her the urge to laugh in.
“Eh- ah! Yeah… I-I mean, yeah! Lets!” Giving off a billion-watt smile out of happiness as soon as she snapped out of her reverie, Kumi hurriedly grabbed Yuria by her wrist and made her way to the stand as fast as she could, afraid that someone else might get there before them.
“Which theme should we pick?”
“One with a heart- ow!”
“Nevermind . I’ll go pick one myself.”
“But a heart theme sounds fitting for a date in an arcade isn’t i-” Kumi immediately halted as soon as she felt Yuria’s back brush against her shoulder when she took a step back, her eyes widening a little from surprise. “Yuria?”
3… 2… The machine began on shouting, much to Kumi’s surprise.
“Eh?!”
Click.
“That’s not fair, I wasn’t rea-”
“Here it comes again, smile, senpai!”
Click.
“W-Wait, let me do a pose first at least! Yuria, that’s unfair, don’t just go posing on your own”
Sticking her tongue out at her senpai, Yuria only laughed in response.
Click.
The two walked out after the fourth shot, which, miraculously enough, they finally managed to take with proper poses; with Yuria giving off a peace sign and Kumi resting her chin above the shorter girl’s head, imitating a rabbit. Okay, maybe Kumi’s pose is not that proper after all.
Picking the picture up as soon as the machine finished printing it, Yuria couldn’t help but laugh out loudly, showing it to Kumi afterward. “Y-Your face on the first three pictures!” She managed to voice out in the middle of her laughing.
“Ah! My mouth is widely open!”
“And you look like an angry old hag.” The younger girl added, still laughing at her albeit a little bit calmer now. “That’s what you get for cheating at me in our race.”
“I wasn’t cheating, jeez.” Kumi muttered to herself while pouting. Taking a second look at the picture, she smiled a little at herself. At least now, she has a picture of her and Yuria. “We should go. Or else we’ll be really late for the movie.”
“Ah. I almost forgot about that”
--
The movie ended in no time, though at first, both Yuria and Kumi felt uncomfortable as soon as they walked inside. It seemed like a lover’s park of some sort! Everyone around them were all couples, and most of all, the movie was about romance, which didn’t help much in lessening their already red faces thanks to the few shameless people inside, being all lovey dovey by placing their hands over their partner’s shoulder and resting their heads against each other.
After the two of them walked out, Yuria couldn’t help but sigh loudly out of relief. Finally, safe from torture. She really needs to give Shiori a rant or two for this. There’s no way her little sister would buy a ticket for a romance movie, after all! That liar…
“Yuria.”
Yuria halted on her tracks, turning to her senpai afterward with her brows lifted up. There she was again, putting that shy look on while rubbing the back of her neck. How cute. She ended up thinking to herself unconsciously while smiling a little. “Yes?”
“I know that it’s already getting dark and all, but this won’t take that long, so can you come with me for a bit?”
“Eh?”
“A surprise.”
Narrowing her eyes at her a little, Yuria let out a hum a little. “It won’t take that long?”
“It won’t. I promise.”
“Okay, I don’t mind.”
In an instant, Kumi’s face lit up, just like a child who just unwrapped a gift box given to her by her parents. Yuria couldn’t help but smile as well- the older girl’s smile was way too contagious for her to resist, after all.
Holding Yuria’s hand lightly, Kumi began on leading the way. It wasn’t that far from the station, thankfully, and a lot of people seemed to have gathered at the same place as well. At the small field by the riverside which seemed way too different from the busy, crowded city they were in earlier.
“What are we doing here?”
“You’ll know soon.”
Seeing the reassuring look Kumi wore, Yuria just nodded her head in defeat. The older girl seemed to have her eyes locked at the sky, and so, she too followed the suit and looked up. Stargazing? Meteor shower? Although a few stars were visible above them, there was no sign of any meteor showers at all. And most of all, with the few numbers of stars present, Yuria was convinced that they weren’t there for stargazing either.
Boom!
Yuria jumped up in surprise, but after seeing where the loud noise was from, she couldn’t help but look up in awe.
Fireworks.
“It’s here!” Kumi yelled out excitedly, sitting down on the grassy plain soon after. Tapping the spot beside her, Kumi gestured for Yuria to sit down as well, to which the younger girl obeyed quietly, her eyes still locked above as more fireworks began on shooting at the sky. “Today’s an opening of a mall not far from here, so they’re having a fireworks display. Only a few knew of this spot, so I thought of bringing you here instead. Though it’s far away, it’s still a great view. And less crowded at that”
Looking at her senpai in awe, Yuria smiled at her a little.
Kumi really is kind. Kind…. And a great senpai to her at that.
“Kuuchan…”
Yuria shyly voiced out as she watched her senpai turn her head from the fireworks to her. And even though it was already dark, thanks to the fireworks’ colorful lights, she could clearly see the surprised look plastered on Kumi’s face.
“Is it okay if I call you that?”
“U-Un…”
Smiling at her even more, Yuria whispered out, making it almost inaudible for the older girl.
“Thank you, Kuuchan.”
Kumi smiled back in response,
“You’re welcome, Yuria.”
Extra
The day after…
Yuria walked inside her classroom with a huge smile plastered on her face, her mind still sticking with the events from yesterday. The smile dropped, however, as soon as she noticed how almost all of her classmates had their eyes on here. Lifting her brows up, she turned to Kanon who, in response, pointed at the chalkboard with a troubled look on her face.
Slowly turning her head towards it, Yuria’s eyes widened.
On it was a drawing of an umbrella; and in its right side had Yuria’s name written on it, while at the other side, Kumi’s. The typical prank people would pull off to people they want to turn into couples- or just for the sake of teasing.
Hurriedly placing her bag above her own desk, Yuria made her way towards the board, picking up the eraser so she could erase the drawing along with her name and Kumi’s. Seriously, how childish can they get? They’re already in high school, for christ’s sake!
“Non~ Can I borrow an extra pencil from you?”
“HOLD IT!” Yuria yelled out out of impulse as soon as she heard Kumi’s voice, her back pressing on the blackboard just so she could cover the ‘love umbrella’ on it. “D-Don’t move! Stay there! Good dog!” she added frantically, making Kumi stare at her as though she was half-crazy or something.
“Yuria, what’s wro-”
“I SAID DON’T MOVE!” Pointing at her accusingly afterward, Yuria turned around and wiped the board once before dashing out of the room. She wasn’t sure to herself why. But she wanted to get out there. Especially now with Kumi present there.
Kumi, on the other hand, simply stared at the door Yuria ran out from, eyes wide and her face filled with confusion. Turning her head to the board afterward, the surprised look she had on a second earlier immediately disappeared.
Even though Yuria still tried on erasing it, a few words were still visible there,
Ku and Yu-a.
