Program needed to speed up AVI/Video...

I think it's easier for me to get to the point right away (because if I don't then I'll get stuck here :-) ):

I have a avi that runs 2:30 minutes and I need to shorten the running time to 2:00 minutes.

So what I am looking for is a program that will allow me to playback an avi or any video at a slightly faster speed and record that at that same speed. Just enough so that it won't sound like a chipmunk.

I know that such a program exist but I have searched though Yahoo and Google and even at download.com and while I came across many programs like rippers, encoders and such, none of which mentioned speeding up videos. So I have become frustrated!

If anyone knows of such a program, PLEASE let me know right away!

Shortening a video by that much can seriously mess up the video. Are there people in the video? If so, do the people speak? If you do what you're proposing, not only will it look like the people in it are all hyper on sugar because they're moving faster, but they'll sound like Alvin & The Chipmunks when they talk. o_o

Mmmmm... strange, I never thought that shortening just 30 seconds would somehow mess up the video. This technique is used alot with syndicated shows. They can either speed up the video abit before anyone sounds like chipmunks or chop out scenes.

Anyway, the video doesn't have alot of sound effects and while there is a narrator, she doesn't speak through out, only when someone is pointing to something.

While searching, I did come across info saying that certain players can play an Avi at close to 2X times it speed and still play nicely without any chipmunk effects.

And while thats sounds great, I still need to record it at that speed.

Try taking a video that you already have, play it regularly, and after a few seconds, increase the speed. You'll see it doesn't take much before obvious changes happen. If the time difference was just a few seconds (I'd say 5 seconds max), then you might be able to get away with it. However, 30 seconds is a significant amount of time. Short of actually cropping out/editing out sections of the video, getting this video to play in the time you want doesn't sound feasible.

Playing a video TWICE as fast without affecting the audio? Dude, you've got to be extremely gullible if you actually believe that.


What's the actual video you're looking to do this with, and how come you need to shrink it so it plays in 2:00 VS 2:30 anyway? Is it really bad to have those 30 seconds?

For the video, you can re-encode it with something like Virtual Dub and increase the framerate per second. A 2:30min @ 30fps = a 2:00min clip @ 35fps.

Not sure, but you might need to do the audio by itself, and then merge the two.
An audio app like Goldwave will do the trick.

adobe premiere can do this.  as for free programs, don't know of any...

WinDVD Videoplayer from Intervideo should work. It has feature called 'time stretching'.  I have tried it once, sound didn't change pitch too much.  It is not free though.  You can get free one together with new DVD drive, if you check around.

Right now I just started to try out VirtualDub, so it's going to take awhile for me to get the hang of it.... unless I just get ticked off and delete the program
