Anti-Piracy Gang Launches their own Video Download Site to Trap People
http://torrentfreak.com/anti-piracy-gang-launches-their-own-video-download-site-to-trap-people

Media Defender, a notorious anti piracy gang working for the MPAA, RIAA and several independent media production companies, just launched their very own video upload service called “miivi.com”. The sole purpose of the site is to trap people into uploading copyrighted material, and bust them for doing so.

Media Defender is known for their shady tactics. Besides launching video upload services, they also trap people into downloading fake torrents so they can collect IP addresses, and send copyright infringement letters to ISPs.

Fortunately, most of the IPs of these fake BitTorrent trackers are already blocked by blocklist software like PeerGuardian. However, they still manage to collect the IP addresses of thousands of users who do fall for this trap.

And Now they try to do the same with their “fake” video download service. They have registered a new domain and launched a video upload / download site with a web 2.0-ish name: miivi.com. Miivi claims to offer hight speed downloads of blockbuster movies like “300” (don’t download), hereby luring people into downloading copyrighted content.

Apparently the cease and desist letters they send to P2P users and video sharing sites like YouTube and other are not enough. At the bottom of this article is a screenshot of the WHOIS info, it speaks for itself. No matter how wrong ‘piracy’ might seem to some people, this is NOT the way to fight it.

My suggestion is: upload and download as much legal content as you can, titled “THIS SITE IS A SCAM“, let’s see if their servers can handle the stress.

Update: Miivi is down now, seems like the plan worked….

Update: they changed their WHOIS info.

Gotcha! New MPAA Site Tries to Trick Users into Illegally Downloading Movies
http://www.zeropaid.com/news/story.php?id=8877

Also offers the ability to download video content using a custom client which also scans if the user has downloaded copyrighted files.

MediaDefender Inc, the "leading provider of anti-piracy solutions in the emerging Internet-Piracy-Prevention (IPP) industry" has launched a website called "MiiVi" dedicated to busting those who both like to download copyrighted content as well as those who already have.

The site is apparently the latest ploy in the ongoing battle against illegal file-sharing and literally takes the game to new heights. It offers WHOLE DOWNLOADS of movies as well as the ability to download and install a "miraculous" new program that offers "fast and easy downloading all in one great site." There's just one problem: the site's registered to MediaDefender Inc. and it's army of prying eyes are just nipping at the bud to take down those who are unaware.

LOL

The site is already down, and people have reported Media Defender to both the registrar (GODADDY) and the ICANN for violation of registration rules. Seems like the address given when they changed the WHOIS info is the address of a Popeye's restaurant in Santa Monica.

Wow. That's definitely cross the line.

Scanning your computer and reporting what it finds?

I hope the people that run the company are arrested for espionage the next time they visit a foreign country.

Seems like even if they bust you, you can get off on entrapment. Especially since its not an official law enforcement agency. What say you MR. Lawyer, Asmo?

These lawyers have no talent for real job.  So they became MPAA's lapdog.

Their actions don't sound very legal either... It would be interesting to see how a court case would end up...

But I think is just for scaring people...

Strange thing is, I just got an email from my ISP telling me that they're aware of my "illegal" activites (i.e. DLing movies off of MiniNova) and that basically I'd better stop.

Like that's gonna happen. :mon lmao:

Wow, I've never heard of an isp telling someone to stop downloading stuff like that, although I know someone who got an email from their isp after he uploaded a Star Trek episode to a newsgroup, and even then it was only because the company who owns Star Trek complained to the isp.

  • Oh! Miwaaaaaaaa!
I think (and it's been widely reported) that the MPAA were hoping that the punters would pay-up rather than risk going to court.

Their tactic seems to rely on the ignorance of the people they sue.

How lame.
