^But I've heard CDjapan does count because oricon lists its head (japanese online)company as a place they get their figures from. O.o

Or I could have it the other way around, I don't remember which sites were counted and which weren't, but I just wanted to say that not all sites counted towards the ranking  XD

Neowing, CDJapan's mother company, is counted, so CDJapan is probably too. I'll admit I ordered my copies from YesAsia because they handle transactions in U.S. Dollars and the U.S. Dollar is really cheap for anyone in the Euro-zone at the moment.

I buy from CDJapan, I've been under the impression that it counts, so it better.

I bought 2 versions this time (I don't do that normally) so at least I got in an extra for someone that didn't order this time. (or at least we can think that way)

@ twoheart: A low ranking may not mean low sales, but it's still a sad thing to see in the ranking and doesn't look all that good for the group.

I really don't want them to lose their records they had with their rankings.

----

And on different thought, I wish there was a remix for Bonkyu Bonkyu BOMB GIRL also on the single, because I feel this song could have a really cool one and I want to hear one (and really I wish all b-sides could have a remix version included on the single as well).

Probably rumours, I'm sure they'll still be there. No matter how crappy their sales are, having Momusu on 'Kouhaku' is like a requirement.

Hey, it's no problem if they don't go this year. They already are some performances above some "bigger" acts. MM has 9 appearances, Hamasaki has 8, BoA, X-Japan and w-inds have 5, and some have less than five, like Utada Hikaru. It would be nice for them to make their 10th appearance on their 10th anniversary, but it's not the end of the world.

 XD

Not high ranking =/= end of the world

Not high ranking =/= low sales

Just because a single doesn't have a high rank doesn't mean it's selling terribly. And vice-versa. Remember Suki Sugite Baka Mitai? I predict this'll hit the 50,000 mark like all Morning Musume singles.

Someone on 2ch has calculated a prediction for the first four days of sale of 26K sold. Let's say his prediction is cautiously on the low side, and with two more days of sales, the first week total should easily be over 30K, perhaps even over 40K. Over 40K in the first week would be nice, with ample opportunity to reach 50K in the following weeks.

For the rank my personal prediction is either 5th or 6th. I'd rather hope it's not 7th or lower because 6th is the lowest rank for any MM single (Morning Coffee). To extend the ranking records Mikan has to be in the top 10 and that is not a problem as far as I can see.

I was wondering if Mikan is also been sold via the iTunes Music Store in Japan or the US. Or perhaps via some other site?

I agree. The reason Mikan's doing kind of doinky is because of all the big competition this week. You have 2 drama theme songs (one from a drama that has been getting great ratings), and you have new singles from groups like EXILE and Ketsumeishi too. And did I mention one of those drama theme songs is by KAT-TUN? So yeah, no wonder it's been dropping. Still, at least it has managed to stay in the top 10 all this week. It's not like it debuted at #20, or something. Hopefully it'll hang on, and if the Utaban people don't treat the members like pyon again when they go on, hopefully that'll help sales a little bit.

Well, it's true it's not the end of the world if they don't get invited but I'm pretty sure some of those artists have declined their invitations some time because of busy schedule or something like that.

Anyway yeah, I don't think this single is selling worse than others, it's just a matter of context. If they release the same week KAT-TUN(right now, one of Johnny's best selling groups) and a bunch of other real big seller groups do, then sure they won't get get the top spot, but I'm sure this single could have been a no. 1 if it had been released on a low competition week. Actually, there was a theory that said that releasing on high competition weeks helped raising sales too couse it attracts people to the CD shops and therefore the other singles get more exposure as well.

What I mean is that this single is probably selling just like the ones MM has released lately, it's just that the context isn't favorable.

That said, I'd really like MM to be on Kouhaku.

I always find it funny how people only focus on the negative side of things. Let me tell you what I see:

1 - Morning Musume keeps their record of having every single on the Top 10
2 - They did it in spite of the competition
3 - Do you know what all the other groups and singers that are on that list BELOW MM would be willing to do to have those sales?

Peace

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, reyfer. :)

1 - This is their first single since Morning Coffee to rank outside the Top 5 (someone confirm this?)
2 - The sales figure is 3/4 that of "Egao YES Nude" (I'm using this as it was the previous single that did not have an associated handshake event) and "SEXY BOY" (the previous single that had the lowest first-week sales)
3- The sales figure is 1/2 that of the single in the 4th position (I can't find the 5th, sorry)

Maybe this single will stay on the Top 200 for a long time, though. :/  Berryz and C-ute's singles have embarrassingly long drops once the registration deadline's over so at least "Mikan" is sustainable.

I think only certain sites actually count towards the ranking when you buy from them (like Amazon Japan?). So if you bought from CDJAPAN, for example, no matter how many copies you buy, it won't affect the ranking.

(Unless you buy from Amazon, of course)
Neowing, CDJapan's mother company, is counted, so CDJapan is probably too.

Just to clear this up, CDJapan sales DO count.
From http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/oricon.html:
"Items you purchase through CDJapan will be calculated into the daily and weekly sales data for Oricon music charts. This applies to all items available through our store."

As for Mikan being out of Top5, some artists can't even get to Top50 (and often get dropped by their labels because of that). Jeez.

Maybe it's because I saw death in the face (long story) but since that accident I tend to see the positive side of things. So MIKAN is the first single besides Morning Coffee to be out of the top 5. So? There's positive in that too. You need to fall first in order to climb back. If you're used to the top, falling a little has to be incentive enough for doing it better next time. And also knowing how japanese sales work, I'm sure the actual figures are higher than what Oricon reflects. Their official Oricon records remain intact, though, because they refer to "Top 10" ranking, not Top 5.

Exactly.

Being in the Top 10 is achievement enough, and as others have said, considering the competition it's great news. So, congrats girls!  :yep:
