This week is finally the release of AKB48's latest single “Sayonara Crawl”. This is an interview to commemorate it. They are both close that they made an unofficial unit called “Oshiri Sisters”

Oshima: That's possible! Even under normal circumstances, we fall into our nervousness. And also the live's fatigue! When the members' names are called, they're going to come out all unsteady and helped by the staff.

Oshima: It's me! (lol). Like coming out from the side “Everyone, thank you so much (trembling voice)”
Watanabe: In addition to that, if it rains it's going to be outrageous. But if it rains, conversely, the feeling might be whatever happens, happens! Like “it rained this much so let's have fun!”
Oshima: Maybe this year's election is going to be troublesome! Absolutely!

The next generation's face has changed!
-Well then, in AKB48's documentary which went public this year, when last year's election finished, the backstage scenes were shot. At that time Oshima-san said “Become stronger” and “Use me as your stepping stone” to Watanabe-san. What about it? It has been one year since then.
Watanabe: That's right. Yes. I think she became a stepping stone.

Oshima: Yes. I think I have. I also think that I became a stepping stone this year.
Watanabe: This year passed while keeping that in mind.
-Ohhh! But it's not only Watanabe-san, I felt that the AKB48 group lately has really grown.
Oshima: Is that so? But, I also feel that way. Recently, the sister teams each have had their own Budoukan lives!
Watanabe: Ahh! That's right.
Oshima: The girls who are called the next generation have also grown. Just before that, the girls who I thought “Is this person alright?” have completely changed their expressions and their point of view in regards to the stage.
Watanabe: Also, the sister group's fighting spirit is amazing. I watched NMB48 solo live. I've been interested since before. As expected they were really interesting, cute, more than anything lively, and shining....I got motivated. As a group, they were amazing.
Oshima: Actually, the AKB48 solo live was the hardest, more so than the last day's all-groups live.
SKE48, NMB48, HKT48 did it, so at the end we felt responsibility over closing it off.
Watanabe: There was that. There were also thoughts that people will think “As expected of AKB48!”
Oshima: But, I don't know if anyone thought that way.
-But, personally I thought it was amazing during AKB48's solo live, every member's faces were full of confidence. I felt the “We are AKB48!” aura.
Oshima: That makes me happy! On that day, rather than thinking “what atmosphere should we make” and “let's dance like this”, we felt more like “right now, we should make a live with the members next to us!”
Watanabe: No matter which way you look at it we were glad as AKB48.
Oshima: Honestly, there were also those that thought “NMB's dancing is better” and “You lose to SKE's uniform dancing and powerfulness.” That's why, I'm glad that everyone in AKB made a stage by being self aware, concentrated, and by showing their individuality. I'm really glad that we had a performance in Budoukan before the election. That is, our and the sister group's members.
-Iyaa, amazing! Well then, lastly, your enthusiasm towards the election and the rank you aim for!
Watanabe: The rank I aim for is like I said last year, #1. During handshake events and others, fans enthusiastically tell me “This year you'll definitely get it”, which encourage me and make me think to try even harder. I want to try my best with all my fans to each #1!
Oshima: I am fine with whatever rank I get this year. I just want to enjoy myself.
-By the way, speaking of Oshima-san, every year after the election, you create a wise saying during your speech. What kind of wise saying you will make this year?
Oshima: Yeahhh, that's right. I really want to enjoy myself so I want to show that feeling.
Watanabe: Ehhhh! (lol) But it looks like it's going to be exciting! Like a festival!

The Reason For Participating In The Elections.

[For me, the elections this year is a festive occasion to enjoy with fans]

-After experiencing the past 3 elections, Oshima Yuko who have been back-to-back with Maeda Atsuko, achieved a leading victory of over 36,000 votes more than runner-up Watanabe Mayu last year, standing at the peak of AKB48’s elections. Even with the candidacy system in place this year, Yuko on the contrary, is no long focused on chasing after the glory of the top spot like the year before, yet she would not give up the elections to make way for the juniors as well, creating various opinions among the people. What is the reason you decide to run for the elections?

“As there were no chances to submit the application beforehand, I only submitted it at the very last minute, when actually, I had already decided to participate from the very start. There were absolutely no hesitations at all. To me, the elections is a platform for me to exchange gratitude with my fans. Fans are really incredible. They possess such an amazingly big heart. In my life, I had never loved anyone so immensely or cherished someone that much. Thus, I respect my fans. I’m filled with thankfulness of their love and attention towards me. Let us look forward to attending this year’s elections with a festive mood.”

-This philosophy of the elections being a celebration to enjoy with fans, the successful actress and AKB’s top leader, Oshima Yuko. What is her top concern now?

“It’s the Team K that I am leading right now!”

-I thought you would definitely expand your vision even more

“What are you saying? Team K is a really big vision! Because there lies an infinite amount of opportunities inside of everyone. In my team, there are members who are able to rank, as well as children that are still waiting for their turns to arrive, all sorts of people. However, my goal is to let Team K become a team where every member can be professional and play central characters. Ever since I started gaining awareness as a captain, my views started changing immensely. For instance, when I go to watch plays or musicals, I would subconsciously begin to think, what would it be like if Team K was performing there in their stead. Everytime I see a professional production, no matter who’s the one saying the lines, the characters by the edge continues to attract the attention of the audience with their superb acting. That’s right, if Team K can have a consciousness like this, everyone would be able to become central characters. I have learnt a lot from the other artists that I worked with on variety shows too. I will share all of my experience outside the theatre with the rest, everyone’s feedback have been good too.

-Thinking back of your reaction when you were first appointed as captain, it’s hard to imagine your enthusiasm about the reformation now.

“I can’t imagine it myself (LOL). However, after the announcement, Akimoto-sensei said to me “From now on, this is Oshima’s Team K, do whatever you want with it”, Yossha~ Then I would do everything how I like it then! The enthusiasm in me was ignited. Like this year’s nation-wide tour, this type of solo-team events, since it’s a rare team concert, I would do everything I can to bring all 20 members of the team onto that stage. Thanks to them, our members have became much more united than before and we have grown a lot as a team as well.

[Precisely because I wish to be overtaken, that’s why I’m not going to step down]

-Due to the difference in seniority among the members, is it sometimes difficult to communicate.

“Something interesting like that happened. When I was coming up with the setlist for the nation-wide tour together with Sayaka, we had a problem immediately. Like “Matsui Sakiko’s piano skills are great so let’s put her with this song,” “Uchida (Mayumi) want to be a singer, so let’s choose that nice song for her,” there were all sorts of considerations, but in the end, we couldn’t think of anymore. That’s right, it’s because these new members, we have not fully understand them yet. Therefore we immediately gathered everyone, to eat as well as chat with each another. ‘Let’s discuss about our dreams!’ That’s how it started (LOL) We asked everyone about their goals for the future. There were many people with unexpected goals, it’s so interesting. Everything that I mastered, everything that I’ve learnt, I want to teach it all to them without any reservations.”

-Yuko’s love for her team is relentless, however as the topic once again fell back onto the elections as well as the current status of the next generation, her expression became a little more serious.

“If I can achieve a consecutive victory, I would probably be so happy that I jump up from my seat… However standing from the viewpoint of wanting to lead AKB48 forward, I hold opposing emotions. I feel that since it’s going to be a alteration of generations, then it is better that it’s done on the stage of the elections, a clear alternation. This is necessary for AKB’s future. Unknowingly, I have started to be expectant for this to happen. Regardless, right now, me and my fans still have strength within us, so I’m not going to give way yo (LOL)!

-The route that Oshima walks is far from smooth-sailing. She had went through a lot of hard work to build herself up to this position. What’s more such a selfless attitude to pass on whatever she has to the younger generations is truly rare. Yuko’s fans! Do not be complacent for this year’s elections and let the honest person go unrewarded!

Yuko is by far my most favorite AKB48 and ALL48 member I adore this women to no end!
She's just sooo awesome and beautiful to me and would always catch my attention when I was first getting into AKB.
She somehow made me love her and I will always support her!

Oshima Yuko’s Election Acceptance Speech 2013

Wow. A single tear will not come to me today. An election that makes my stomach turn from laughing is a first. Last year I said I would would be a stepping stone, and I worked this year thinking about AKB and my juniors.

There is some part of me that sort of wanted someone else to use me as a stepping stone. But there are some people who will overcome, who are meant to overcome me. But when I think about how easily they just leaped over me…I feel as if I did my job right and I can rest easy now.

First, second, first, second…I mean, second, first, second, first, second is a  rare occurrence for members. It’s a job well done to me.

I’m really excited for the new AKB. I wonder what kind of comical group it is going to be. Or maybe we’ll become even more idol-like. But there are so many varieties of members that people around the nation are supporting. The rest of the senbatsu and I are excited to show this new AKB to everyone.

I hope there are new things and I wish for everyone to keep on hoping for new things from AKB. I want to keep it enjoying it all. Thank you all so much.

Although fans of AKB48 and its sister groups may have chosen Rino Sashihara to replace Yuko Oshima as their favorite, the two have only kind words for each other as they pledge to take their respective idol franchises to even dizzier heights.

In a surprise to her fans and "antis" alike, Sashihara clinched the top spot in the "general election" fan vote event for members of the all-girl pop group AKB48 and sister groups on June 8, accumulating a record 150,570 votes. Oshima who won the popularity contest last year, placed second with 136,503 votes.

Sashihara’s upset victory came a year after she was demoted and transferred to HKT48, AKB48’s sister group based in Fukuoka, western Japan, over a “scandal” involving a former boyfriend.

Since then, the 20-year-old Oita native has re-emerged in TV variety shows with her comedic talents and charming “hetare” (cowardly) character.

In recent interviews with The Asahi Shimbun, Sashihara and Oshima, 24, who is still considered as the “unequivocal ace” of AKB48, talked about their respect for each other and gave fans a peek at the real person away from the spotlight.

The general election fan vote on June 8 was a series of surprises. What was most surprising was that (Rino) Sashihara, known for her 'hetare' (cowardly) character, won the election doing a great job beyond her well-known character.

As for myself, I had known instinctively I would not win the top place, but it would be frustrating to see myself slipping down sharply. As the winner of the last year’s 'election,' I hoped I would be placed at least in the top five.

I was not so much concerned about winning, perhaps because I was prepared to give up my position to the next generation.

I once had an inferiority complex because I did not have an established character.

But after thinking about it for a while, I came to the conclusion to replace my inferiority complex with a positive thought.

Since then my catchphrase has been “an ever-changing entertainer.”

I have worked hard, thinking that being colorless and transparent transforms oneself into different beings.

I enjoy seeing people enjoying seeing me.

I do all kinds of things to entertain my fans--not only songs, but hairstyles, makeups, costumes, and I even performed embarrassing 'hengao' funny faces.

My current goal is to nurture my juniors with my utmost efforts. I think I can do this as enthusiastically as ever, with the general election being over.

What I want to tell them is to have a sense of professionalism as a member of AKB48.

If each member works hard to shine individually, the whole group will shine.

In order to make this happen, I want each one to improve herself moving out of the nutshell of the group, while trying to improve through friendly competition within the group.

By helping them move in this direction, I want to see as many members as possible truly grow.
