3. Cooking oil
Rika pulled away from Hitomi’s hand and walked to the shelf. She tried to pick up a gallon but it was too heavy.
“You’re going to get yourself hurt, doing that.” Hitomi went to the shelf “Let me…”
Rika stood aside as Hitomi picked up the too-heavy-for-Rika-to-carry gallon.” After placing it on the cart, Hitomi took Rika’s hand again in hers. “If there’s something you want to buy that’s a bit heavy, just tell me. I’ll get it for you, okay, Rika-chan?”
Rika smiled. Hicchan’s such a gentleman... Her hand is so warm…
They went on walking to the corner of the supermarket. Rika leaned her head on Hitomi’s shoulder every now and then.Hitomi walked on proud holding Rika’s hand. Hitomi could see how envious the other guys in the store were of her.
Rika looked at the last thing on their list.
4. Rice
Rika saw the sacks of rice in the one of the shelves in the corner. She tugged at Hitomi’s sleeve.
“Nani?”
Rika pointed at the sacks.
Hitomi pushed the cart a bit closer and rubbed her hands. Rika looked among the sacks. Sinandomeng or Jasmin? She couldn’t decide. She looked at Hitomi. “Which do you prefer?"
Hitomi had no idea of which to pick. “Ayaka is usually the one who buys me rice… so I don’t know which to buy.”
Rika laughed at the thought of Ayaka having to buy rice for Hitomi. Ayaka acts like she is Hicchan’s mom.
“Let’s go with this one.” Hitomi picked up a sack labeled Jasmin. “The name had a nice ring to it.” She placed it in the bottom part of the cart, away from the chicken, eggs and cooking oil. Rika folded the paper with the list and placed it in her pocket.
“We’re done? That is all we need to buy?”
“Ayaka constantly buys stuff for the house. These are the only things she has missed out. Ayaka’s really been looking out for you.”
Hitomi laughed. “Yeah, she’d make a great mom.”
The two proceeded to the counter where the cashier. “Good morning sir, Cash or card po?”
“Card”
The cashier began passing each item through the bar code reader. After four beeps, Hitomi handed her a credit card.
“I received a Citibank Visa card from Mr. Hitomi Yoshizawa.”
“Yes.”
“Just a moment, sir”
The cashier swiped the card and pressed the necessary buttons.
After the transaction was over, the cashier looked at the two and commented to Hitomi “Sir, bagay po kayo ni ma’am.”
Hitomi just smiled at the cashier as she had no idea what she said.
The bagger loaded their purchased items on a cart. Hitomi took the cart and pushed it to the exit.
As they were walking away, she asked Rika. “Do you have any idea what that cashier said?”
Rika was blushing the whole time and didn’t know if she should translate. That would be a bit embarrassing. She finally took out her sketchbook again. “She said, you and I look good together…”
“No way! You just made that up!” Hitomi teased Rika but was amazed at how much Rika understood Filipino. Well, she has been her for five years.
I didn’t! Rika crossed her arms across her her chest and walked away from Hitomi.
“Hey, I was just kidding!” Hitomi sped up to catch up with her.
Rika continued to walk, increasing her speed, leaving Hitomi behind.
“Rika!”
Rika did not slow down. She was smiling to herself, pleased that Hitomi was running after her.
Hitomi sped up even more, finally catching up with Rika. “I really think we look good together…”
Rika suddenly stopped and gave Hitomi a quick peck on the cheek before running out the store and back to the car.
