And what makes you think they are copying your way of celebrating Christmas? Are there any other parts of the world other than US that celebrate it differently? Just a question, that's all
Well, let's think about it: although Japan has evolved some of its own Christmas traditions (i.e., the romantic declarations, the Christmas cake) over the last few hundred years, the modern commercial version of Christmas was primarily shaped by the post-WWII occupation. American soldiers playing Santa were the first to distribute Christmas presents to the people on any real scale, and the Japanese children then would corporate executives today.
Furthermore, pizza may be originally Greek or Sicilian and fried chicken may be originally German, but the two of them together along with everything else in that mountain of junk food is uniquely American. Go watch the episode again; there's nothing else it could be.
So yes, I think the argument could be made that the Japanese celebrate Christmas in a particular way because it's how they think Americans celebrate it. (Thank you, KFC. *bleh*) And while I won't deny we eat that crap, we usually don't eat it all at once and we certainly don't eat it for Christmas.
That much American-style junk food must be absolutely revolting to people raised on a typical Japanese diet, but it's what they put out for a Christmas party because it's what they think
we put out for a Christmas party. And that's what makes me sad — what must they think of us?
Notice that all of the girls immediately went to the salad first and then
maybe tried a slice of pizza...
