One of these days I'm going to upload the different versions of "Yozora" by Itsuki Hiroshi.  I swear the original vinyl version (circa '75) is wa~ay different from what exists on CD today.

Now... how do you make that YouTubey vid with the fixed picture?

Noticed my pay-cable J-station airs a 30-minute infomercial for "Enka Yume Gekijou." So I set the DVR timer to record in the early morning.

Checked it just now and found... "My Idol: Seishun Playback" being hawked instead. Hahahaha!

Oh well, it'll make for a good upload to YouTubey anyway...

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for posting all these wonderful links and keeping this thread alive!  :)

I've recently "discovered" Ichiro Kanbei (神戸一郎) on youtube, and am amazed at the man's voice, especially his earlier recordings. Would anyone here know where I could find more music by the great man besides youtube?

Thanks in advance!  :D

Another great infomercial:

Less expensive: "only" four discs in this collection. Not certain if the "new music" really extended itself to the 1990s but whatever. Plenty great karaoke material here.

I also looked up that gal's J-Wiki page: she's an actual DJ, blogger, etc. What a cutie pie!

Saburo's post on March 11 has a picture of Akiko Wada with her song from 1972, あの鐘を鳴らすのはあなた Ano Kane o Narasu nowa Anata
YouTuber okeihan1000 recently posted this clip of Akiko's award winning song:

There is a CM playing right now with Actress Ayame Gouriki for au (mobile phone) that uses a very nice tune. I was going crazy trying to find the original tune, which turned out to be "Le Marchand de Bonheur", by a vocal group from Lyon, France called Les Compagnons de la chanson.

The song topped the French pop charts in the first 6 weeks of 1960.

But how did this tune end up in a CM in Japan in 2012? Because of 芦野 宏  Hiroshi Ashino, a singer in Japan who dedicated his life to bringing French "chanson" to Japan. Ashino san, who passed away in February, 2012, at the age of 87,  appeared on NHK's ''Kohaku Uta Gassen" 10 straight times in the 50's and 60's.

His version of "Le Marchand de Bonheur" (The Merchant of Happiness) came out a few months after the original hit,
and was called 幸福を売る男 /Kofuku o Uru Otoko (The Happiness Selling Man)

With a very nice arrangement, here is 幸福を売る男 /Kofuku o Uru Otoko (The Happiness Selling Man) in the 2012 cm for au mobile phones. Ayame Gouriki is the pretty girl at the end of the cm.

Just bought "Super Hit Collection- Momoe Yamaguchi vol. 1"

16 very nice songs, including 冬の色 / Fuyu no Iro (The Color of Winter)......

Still amazed how young she was when she retired, how much she accomplished in a few short years.....

Released in 1981, 'Kotoba ni Dekinai' (Words Don't Come Out) isn't quite sixties, but Off Course is a group from the 60's and 70's, so this song fits in to the Old School. Group leader Kazumasa Oda really had some trouble getting the words out during this 1982 Budokan live performance, but that is one of the things that makes live performances very special.............

I know we talked about ishida ayumi a while back, but this is the first time I saw her in motion... oh my god... I kept muttering kawaii to myself. You see that skirt!? Thats swag in a bottle. This is a sexy classy chick. I am so in love with her, they sure don't make idols like they used to. That hand choreography... thats old school baby.

Edit:

Quick question for anyone who knows... Just when did idol chanting start? Cause these dudes are killing it in this vid, like they are pros... whistles and everything. And this was 84... that was when I was born! Looks like that is not just a current thing, its old school. Anyone can offer a bit of a history lesson on the idol chanting / cheering as seen in this vid?

Edit2:
tennisanime gets thanks for 2 reasons, posting and having an avatar of nocchi... may nocchism prevail!

I don't know when it started, but I can go earlier than 1984 - I've heard chanting in Pink Lady vids from around 1977,  and Yamaguchi Momoe vids from 1975.  Occasionally you get a shot of the people chanting and they're wearing matching headbands, and they have little plastic megaphones.

EDIT:

Yamaguchi Momoe - Natsu Hiraku Seishun (Yoru no Hit Studio, 1975.07.28)

This is one of the earliest examples of Momoe fan chanting I know of (I think).  From Yoru no Hit Studio back when the show had a studio audience (the show changed slightly in March/April 1976, and shows from after that have no studio audience although there's always plenty of guests to make things look busy.)
Quite a few shots of the fans chanting and the host even imitates them at the end!

DOWNLOAD

Also I've a feeling there might be chanting on some Ishida Ayumi audio from around 1969/70, but I can't confirm that until I find it.

A lot of great pop tunes are used in television dramas and films in Japan. And in the advertising world, a 15 second CM might grab the viewers attention simply because of a brief few seconds from a familiar song.

I have discovered a lot of wonderful songs and artists this way- find out the name of the song (on CM's they often print the name of the song for about 2 seconds at the bottom of the song), and then find an original version of it on YouTube....might be a group or artist that I have never heard of, or maybe a song by an artist that I know, but hadn't heard the song before.

So here we have a commerical with two well known actresses- Miho Kano (34 years old) and Makiko Esumi (45 years old) for lipstick...obviously the cosmetics company is targeting women of this age, and the music has a nostalic feel to it......
