When you click your mouse in the password box it usually makes a popup, get rid of the popup then click the box again and you should be able to enter the password.  Maybe your browser is blocking java or something.  If you use a different browser try internet explorer.

I added the passwords because someone copied the links of the first few and posted them to another site prompting a lot of discussion.  I'd rather people link to the thread then it might bring some new people in or some new discussion or something.

Hi Dan,

I googled "japanese 1940 1950 1960 music" and found this thread...

Firstly, a HUUUUUUUUGE, heartfelt THANKS to you for uploading all these oldies! I'm a big oldies fan, and this means a heck of a lot to me...

Just to give you an idea, I was lucky enough to be in Tokyo in 2003 for work for a couple of weeks. I spent my spare time searching for oldies such as Kirishima Noboru's "Omoide no Enoshima" from your 1930's collection (I heard the song for the first time thanks to your post, and I must say that I was almost in tears). Every time I went to one of those large Tokyo music stores (e.g HMV Shibuya) and asked for "1950's music", they looked at me like I was from outer space! Nobody in Japan listens to oldies anymore I guess, so they certainly didn't expect a foreigner to ask for oldies! Most store didn't have anything, even the smaller music stores or the music stalls in the subways. I was quite crushed.

At last, a couple days before I left, I found a CD called "Meet The Memory" (Showa Era 35 - 40), manufactured by Victor Entertainment, Japan.

There are 20 songs on that CD, but unfortunately, I do not speak Japanese, so cannot read the artist or song names. I also have no access to a scanner. Sadly, google returns nothing when I search for "meet the memory japan music", so I've not found a picture of the CD cover. Anyway, I ripped the songs to mp3, with the highest Variable Bit Rate possible and compression for best quality. My favourite song is track 17.

I've never uploaded anything to the Internet before, but there's a first time for everything, and this thread's certainly worth the effort. I registered on this forum in order to say thanks, and also to give something back. I now share my "Meet The Memory" CD with you:

http://www.mediafire.com/?jmwoh5nymvg (part 1, 55MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?rh5ynxudizz    (part 2, 50MB)

Once again, thanks Dan!

Kolya

PS: By the way, would anyone know if there's a thread on Hawaiian songs somewhere in the net? Hawaiian songs seem to be big in Japan, and they're pretty cool. Thanks.

Hi Kolya,

Welcome to the forum, and glad you like the songs.

I enjoy listening to a lot of the old music, the one you uploaded is from a great period too.

A lot of the stuff I uploaded came from a newsgroup from a guy called Vaqueteo.  He also had the same problem that he had the cassettes and cd's but didn't have the names so we worked as a team, he sent me scans of the covers and I searched for the cd's on the net so I'd have the kanji so I could use a webtranslator to translate them, then I sent him the titles so he could title his files before uploading.  One thing I noticed during those times was that when you get a song by Frank Nagai, sometimes it's a man and sometimes a woman!  I figured that Frank Nagai was probably the bandleader and whoever the singer was, they were a guest vocalist.  With older music (1930's/40's) the bandleader was more important than whoever the singer was and on some old jazz records it doesn't even give the name of the singer, just the bandleader/name of band, and then says "with vocal refrain".

Thanks for the upload.  It's late and I don't wanna wake anyone but I'll enjoy listening to it tomorrow.

There's another cd from the "Meet The Memory" series just up the page.
I googled for Meet The Memory in Japanese (ミート・ザ・メモリー) and found it pretty quick.  I couldn't find a very big picture of the cover though.  I listened to 2 of the songs just to confirm I found the right one.

Hi Dan,

Yep, that's the cover of my CD alright! Good stuff! Now I know the artists' and song names! Awesome! Thanks again.

You know what? I've completely forgotten that I've actually got a CD by Kyu Sakamoto!  :D. See http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Best-Kyu-Sakamoto/dp/B000066ACY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1249478312&sr=1-8), but there's no track listing there.

Here are the links to my CD rip (mp3 VBR). Track 2 is the famous "Sukiyaki" hit:

http://www.mediafire.com/?jzyzm0ykmdd (part 1, 55MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?ymdzxnamnyz (part 2, 22MB)

Enjoy!  :)

Hi from Rome, Italy..
As a newcomer I wanted to add what I consider a beautiful cd "Canzone & chanson" by Kiyoshi Hasegawa
I was also wondering if anyone could help me find some japanese artists albums from the 90'es.. I dont speak japanese so I am not able to make proper researches on the internet..

I love the voice of Mina Aoe   does anyone have her albums to share here?
http://rapidshare.com/files/270827422/KIYOSHI_HASEGAWA_-_SINGS_CHANSON___CANZONE__2005_.rar.html

i have tried to add the image of the cd but there's no way to add a picture to this post.. :(

Thanks.  Downloading now.

I didn't know rapidshare only allows 10 downloads now.  There's other sites that allow unlimited downloads like sharebee.com or mediafire.com.
