Any Nighwish fans on here? I just received the new album 'Imaginaerum' and I've been giving it a quick listen. I'm wondering what other fans think of it. Personally I think it's very different from any of their previous stuff, even from Dark Passion Play. And, it hasn't gripped me so far the way that Dark Passion Play did. I like it a lot but it doesn't quite have that 'epic' scale that their previous 2 albums had. This feels more like it's specifically written to be combined with strong visuals (but maybe thats the point, after all, they are working on a film aren't they?). There isn't anything on the album to match the scale of 'Ghost Love Score' or 'The poet and the pendulum'.
I really like Storytime (which I new before the album arrived since they put up the music vid a few weeks ago). Arabesque is an interesting track as it's pure orchestral and has a very nice progression of styles. The same can be said for the final track Imaginaerum, which again is a brilliant piece of music.
It's also interesting that they really have changed the way they used vocals. In former albums, even somewhat in Dark Passion Play, there were very few vocals that weren't the lead females (not including the backing choirs). In this new album there are much more male vocals. I'm also struggling to figure out if the male vocals are all Marco's, cause some of them definitely don't sound like him.
Anyway, Tuomas really has continued to adapt his style as he's produced an album unlike no other of his to date. Perhaps the reason why I haven't been blown away by this is much my fault. I think I set myself up with the expectation it would be somewhat similar to the past 2 albums and I hoped for that long, epic track as a main feature. I need to forget my preconceived ideas of what I was expecting and listen to this for what it is.
