Pulling Teeth [Chapter Three]

Chapter One

The rain swept  down from the heavens like a huge curtain of grey, covering everything it touched with dreary tones. The odd flicker of lightning only added to the fitting atmosphere of what was about to unfold.

A lone figure stood  under a dank-looking bridge in hope of some shelter, but the hair matted to their face suggested that they were already too late. The forlorn looking form had their arms crossed tight to their chest in desperate hope of some warmth and their eyes darted from left to right in impatience.

Other than the occasional passing car the only other noise came from the splashing of the raindrops as they crashed to the floor; drains had become blocked and the streets had started to become flooded. A small “tut” came from the figure as they stepped back to avoid the rising water overflowing into their shoes.

Suddenly another shape emerged from further down the street and was heading towards the one already occupying the space underneath the overpass. As they got closer it could be seen that they were wearing a huge blue cagoule with their hood up, they showed little concern for the precipitation lashing down all around them.

As they approached the second figure they stopped, looked up, and gave an enormous smile.

“You’re late,” the one without a hood sounded less than impressed.

“I’m here now though, right? That’s better than what you thought you’d get!”

“It would have been more foolish of you, not me, if you hadn’t come here tonight. You’ve already messed us about twice in case you’ve forgotten.”

“Yeah, yeah! Like I said I’m sorry about that, nothing I could do about it, things out of my control and all tha-”

“Koharu.”

“Yeah?”

“Haven’t you got something for me?” they extended their hand and raised their eyebrows in expectation.

“Sure.” with a hint of disappointment in her voice, Koharu unzipped her coat halfway and started to rummage around  in search of something. “It’s here…..somewhere…..Ah! Here we are!” She proceeded in removing a bundle of paper held together with elastic bands and placed it into the outstretched hand, the grin returning to her face.

“Forgetting something?”

Her smile soon retuned back to a glum expression, “Geez Officer Takahashi, this was all I could get, okay?” Some of them are already suspicious of me and-”

“Okay, okay, don’t worry about it Koharu, you’ve done good. You should just count yourself lucky that I said I’d deal with you and your buddies rather than one of the other officers.”

“Yeah I am! Really lucky I know! And really grateful of you to look out for me like this!”

“Okay, calm down, you’re not off the hook just yet.” the officer said with a slight smile at the girls naivety. “I can’t just let you go off scot-free just yet; you’re still going to have to get me some of the stuff your friends are supplying; and I know it’s going to be hard for you,” she continued, seeing Koharu about to interrupt her, “but it’s the only way this case is ever going to close. It’s already gone on longer than we’d originally hoped, you know.”

“Officer!” Koharu stamped, “You think I’m not trying to help you here? Because I am! This is dangerous for me you know!”

“I know, I know-”

“So what, you don’t trust me? Is that it? You think I’m carrying stuff myself? Well here, go ahead and check, search me if that’s what you really want to do!”

The officer knew that the girl could get freaked out at times and needed calming down, she was thankful there was no-one else around.

“Koharu, enough, you’ve got to calm down please.”

“I am calm! I’ve got nothing to feel guilty about! Look, I‘m not carrying a darn thing!” she started to hit herself in the same area of the chest she’d produced the papers from; as she did a small bag fell to the floor with a small thud. “Clean as a whis-”

The two of them looked down at the bag on the floor then slowly up at each other again. Both of them dashed for the bag but Koharu was the quickest and she hastily threw it back where it had came from.

“Hand it over Koharu.”

“No! It’s nothing anyway, it’s just my-my…washing powder anyway, okay?”

“Enough games Koharu, I don’t want you messing me around anymore.”

Koharu started turn her body away from Takahashi and began edging away.

“Don’t even think about it…”

“Sorry Takahashi, but I can’t do it to them…they’re my friends…”

“I’m here to help you Koharu, here to help you and your friends. Hand it over to me, please?”

“No, no, no!” Koharu shook her head frantically; if it hadn’t been raining the tears forming in her eyes would have been evident.

“Hand it over-……Oh, shi-” As soon as Takahashi started to speak Koharu made a break for it. Taking a deep breath the officer gave chase.

Takahashi knew she had to stay close to her target as the rain made it hard to see very far, something which seemed easier said than done. Koharu was clearly much faster than her pursuer and Takahashi was already starting to lose her breath.

*Just stay with her; she isn’t trying to lose me. She’s just scared and running straight back to wherever it is she’s been hiding out, if I can keep up with her she’ll lead me straight to it.*

Knowing this spurred her on despite her increasing exhaustion.

Running through the dark streets, second nature seemed to take over, from the corner of her eye Takahashi thought she saw something odd. She had to stop and double-take as she caught sight of what was happening down one of the side streets. Her eyes widened as she saw what looked like a mugging taking place.

*Great, this is all I need.* Takahashi glanced back at Koharu who was getting further away with every second. *Damn, what do I do? Follow the only lead we’ve got on this case and bring an end to it all, or actually stop a crime for certain right here and now?*

After thinking as quickly as she could she shook here head and ran over to where the mugging was taking place; she knew she could have potentially lost three months work with Koharu but she didn’t want someone’s death on her conscience.

“Hold it!” she shouted at the figure with its back turned towards her; the beating they were handing out looked pretty brutal from the little part of it that she could see.

Their head jolted round and stared straight at Takahashi; she couldn’t see their face very well but for some reason their eyes piercing her like that gave her a shudder down her spine. They looked back at their victim briefly before leaving them where they lay, and instead turned their intentions to Takahashi, adopting a menacing posture.

“That’s far enough, hands where I can see them, now.” putting her hand on her holster Takashi stared at the one approaching her trying to look just as menacing, but it didn’t stop their advance.

“Hands up, now! Don’t make me take you out!” Her voice trembling; whatever it was about this individual they had an aura about them that had something terrifying about them.

Takahashi started to back up but it didn’t deter the assailant and her hand was frozen on the holster, unable to reach for her gun.

She started to shuffle backwards, gathering speed but as she was almost emerging into the main street again she trip over a bin that had been overturned. She landed with her back hitting a metal pole that had been propping up a wooden platform over head. Without much chance to react she looked up just in time to see a cluster of paint pots come tumbling down on top of her, one hitting her square between the eyes and knocking her out cold.

Oh, I don't think I like the sound of this. A bridge at night? A face giving the impression of being "too late"?

Could be that something bad happened that shouldn't have.
:dizzy:

Or they were just supposed to meet someone and lost track of the time.
:mon sweat:

“Okay, okay, don’t worry about it’s Koharu, you’ve done good. You should just count yourself lucky that I said I’d deal with you and your buddies rather than one of the other officers.”
Aichan's a cop? So then... Koharu's one of her criminal contacts/stooges?

Quote
“Okay, calm down, you’re not off the hook just yet.” the officer said with a slight smile at the girls naivety. “I can’t just let you go off scot-free just yet; you’re still going to have to get me some of the stuff your friends are supplying; and I know it’s going to be hard for you,” she continued seeing Koharu about to interrupt her, “but it’s the only way this case is ever going to close. “Officer!” Koharu stamped, “You think I’m not trying to help you here? Because I am! This is dangerous for me you know!”
Indeed. If Koharu is indeed a stooge for the cops, then she's definitely sticking her neck out. If word got out of what she's doing, she's likely as good as dead.

The two of them looked down at the bag on the floor then slowly up at each other again. Both of them dashed for the bag but Koharu was the quickest and she hastily threw it back where it had came from.
Uh-oh. Koharu's been holding back on Aichan. :O

Knowing this spurred her on despite her increasing exhaustion.
Koharu's just going on adrenaline right now. Most likely she'll just head back to somewhere familiar to her, possibly even back to her hideout as Aichan suspects.

Aichan, you should probably be drawing your weapon about now. Who knows if this creep is hopped-up on something or not?

Oh no, don't tell me that she's NEVER used her weapon in the field before?
:mon scare:

Chapter Two

Glaring lights invaded the officers eyes when she attempted to force them open; she quickly shut them again to avoid the stinging pain. She lay there for a moment, her face scrunched up in an attempt to block out the light further, the darkness seemed comforting somehow.

It took a her a little while longer to realise that he entire body was aching and she had a banging headache. The headache she could understand, but even she was surprised about just how much energy her running had seemed to take out of her.

She tried to lift her arm to shield her eyes from the light as she attempted to open them again but found that even this wasn’t an even task. She could only raise her arm partway before it seemed as though something was pulling back on it, something quite painful. Raising her head was no good either, her neck was strapped down to whatever it was she seemed to be lying on.

It was at this point that she began to panic, wherever she was she wasn’t leaving of her own accord which probably meant that the one whom she’d confronted earlier had taken her somewhere. Raising her other arm seemed slightly easier, the aching was still evident but nothing seemed to be holding it down and so she frantically try to pull her other arm free; something she wasn’t finding easy to do with her eyes closed.

“Easy now, you don’t want to be doing that.” Came an unfamiliar voice.

Takahashi froze instantly in fear, was she going to face some sort of punishment now that her captor knew that she was trying to escape?

“Just give yourself a second and keep calm okay?” Whoever it was speaking to her the officer found it hard to believe that this was the same person she’d seen earlier, they had a naturally soothing voice, certainly not one that you’d expect to belong to a thug.

Soft hands took hold of her arm and lay it back down to her side without any show of force.

“Where am I?” It seemed the natural thing to ask and a slight amount of courage had returned to her.

“That isn’t really relevant right now, even if I told you you’d be none the wiser. What’s your name, can you tell me that?”

“I’m Officer Ai Takahashi, and I don’t know what you people think you’re doing but you’re in more trouble than I think you know. Taking an officer as a prisoner is a very serious offence-”

“Let’s not get carried away, shall we?”

Takahashi couldn’t believe what she was hearing, this person was clearly not worried about whatever repercussions they may end up facing, and they were taking on a very similar tone to one she would adapt herself when talking to the likes of Koharu.

“I don’t mean to degrade you or anything, but take my word for it when I say that you’re in a situation of which you have no control over. If you listen to me then I’m sure you’ll get out of this the best way that you possibly can, okay?”

Either this person was patronising or was genuinely concerned for her safety, and Takahashi certainly didn’t think it was the latter.

She forced her eyes open and felt a pain far greater then she expected, the dazzling rays seemed to be burning right through to the back of her skull. Still, she persisted in trying to rip the bonds away from around her neck; when she realised this wasn’t working she looked down at her arm and saw it injected with several needles attached to wires which seemed to be pumping several fluids, all varying in colour, into her body.

“Don’t touch those!” the strangers voice sounded panicked and a silhouette came in to view and places its arms over Takahashi’s.

Trying to fight back proved useless as the free arm that she did have felt like jelly when trying to push them away.

“At least….turn the lights off.”

Takahashi closed her eyes again and before long from behind her eyelids she could sense the lights go out.

Slowly opening them again there was a welcoming darkness surrounding the room now and yet everything seemed much clearer.

“You really are fragile at the moment aren’t you?”

This time she could lean her head over and see where the voice was coming from. To her surprise there stood a small slender girl, wearing a doctors coat standing where she’d expected to see a much more menacing figure.

“Is that better?” the girl smiled.

“Yes, thank you.”

The girl went over to a desk at the other side of the room and sat down behind a computer.

“So, Ai Takahashi was it?”

“That’s right.” came the weak reply.

“Well Ai, like I said there isn’t much I can really tell you at this point but when your strength returns I’m sure you’ll be filled in on everything.”

“You must know something. Like, what the hell was that thing that attacked me?”

“Thing? Why do you say thing?” The girl started to head back over to where Takahashi was lay.

“Whatever it was not human…”

The girl remained silent.

“I know it sounds crazy but, there was something about them, some sort of presence that wasn’t….wasn’t natural…and their face…”

“What was wrong with their face?”

“They were bleeding….no, they weren’t…but they their face was covered in blood.” She was struggling to remember exactly what she’d seen despite it being so vivid at the time, she cursed the paint can for knocking her memory from her.

“There was blood all around their mouth, but they had no cuts on their face. It must have been from the person they attacked but, what where they doing? Eating them?”

The girl let out a small laugh that sounded a little forced.

“Well Ai Takahashi, you have a very colourful imagination I have to say.”

“Look who are you really? You must know something about what I saw.”

“Me? I’m the doctor here, Risa Niigaki.”

“Here? Where is here?”

“I told you,” Risa sighed, “all that will be answered in time, she rest for now, please. Trust me, it’s for your own good.”

“I suppose I’m not getting out of here without you letting me am I?”

“It’s not me you have to worry about…”

“Maybe not, but it’s the police that you and your friends will have to worry about.”

“I doubt it.” Niigaki said sombrely.

“And why’s that?”

“Well, if you really want to hear it…”

“Go on.”

Niigaki took a deep breath and took a few steps away.

“It’s been two weeks since the incident you’re speaking of; the police aren’t likely to do anything because you’ve been declared as Killed In Action. I’m sorry you have to hear this now-”

She swung her head around as she was interrupted by a thump behind her.

Takahashi had managed to free her arm and neck and was on the cold stone floor. Risa darted to her side and attempt to help her up.

“I’ve….had enough. Let me…out of here”

“You don’t have the strength to escape; even if I let you go and you got away unnoticed you’d never last long enough to get to safety, you hear me?”

Mustering all of her strength Niigaki managed to get Takahashi’s body partly onto the bed that she’d been lying on.

As she did she Takahashi noticed that she’d paused for a moment and appeared to be staring at something on her neck.

“What are you doing?” Takahashi managed to whisper.

“Nothing.” Niigaki replied with a sorrowful tone and one more push to help Takahashi back onto the bed.

She carefully started to clean and then reinsert the needles back into Takahashi’s arm that was now letting the fluids that had been pumping into her spill back out.

After tending to her patient's wounds Niigaki headed back over to her desk and let out a long sigh.

“Please, for your own good, rest now, okay?”

Takahashi had already fainted from exhaustion.

Whoever this person is, they must have connections and public power/influence that keeps them from getting in any major legal/criminal trouble.

Question is then, what's the purpose of the fluids, and why are they being pumped into her in the first place? Panicking over the possibility of the tubes being removed would lead one to believe that to do so would be dangerous for Aichan. So then why is this stranger concerned for Aichan?  :?

Godddamn it. Didn't I say before that this forum has a weird obsession with vampires? >_<

Oh god no.

After Aichan was knocked out in that alley, the suspect (who by now must obviously have been a vampire) fed on her, didn't it? T_T

The fluids must somehow have the ability to keep Aichan alive, don't they? If she doesn't get them, she dies...permanently? :bleed eyes:

So now what? Aichan the Vampire Slayer?

Ha wow I loved this chapter. It was great. I liked how you introduced Risa too. Lol Doctor Risa, never thought of that, but I like it. What the hell did Risa or whoever else did to Ai?! She's some experiment now it seems and damn it's not going to be a good thing. I hope you update soon! Things are really starting to get good. I also want to see what they did to Ai.

Oh noes! Ai's got bunch of needles in her! Hmm, I wonder if she will turn into vampire. It is vampires right? Blood around the mouth, Risa staring at Ai's neck. Yup *nods* Now she's part of this secret organization that deals with the supernatural, yes? lol

I have to agree with JFC. This forum really love their vampires. XD

The countdown begins! 2 more posts to go! And I already know where I'm posting those two posts.

Thanks for all your comments again guys, it's really nice to see.

I'll be honest though, I was kind of left out of the loop with regards to the "obsession" but I've noticed it myself since! XD

Chapter Three

“So why didn’t you shoot her?”

“Sorry, what?”

“The girl who attacked you, why didn’t you shoot her?”

Takahashi had been awake for a couple of hours and she was starting to feel like her strength had returned; in fact she felt better than she had done before. She and Niigaki had been exchanging questions for some time but still both of them had plenty more to ask.

“I thought you said that you didn’t know who’d attacked me?”

“I don’t.”

“Then how would you know that it was a girl?”

“Because there are no male vampires.”

The response caused Takahashi to simply raise an eyebrow in question, she was still unsure how to act in the presence of this person. They were obviously a little crazy to be believing in vampires but it was unclear just how dangerous she was.

“No males ones eh? And why is that?”

“Well alright not none at all, but there are very few. It became pretty obvious that female vampires were always the stronger of the two sexes and with all the fighting going on between different clans it became pretty useless to have male vampires to fight alongside. Don’t ask me why it works like that, it just does; it’s very rare that you’ll ever come across a male vampire.”

The most shocking thing for Takahashi was that this girl genuinely believed every word that she said, either that or they were a very good actor.

“So…why didn’t you shoot her?”

“Well, for one thing I never knew it was a girl, to be honest I thought it was some huge bruiser or something; I was scared to death.”

“I’m not surprised.”

Takahashi decided to just ignore what Niigaki said and get on with her story; she was going to try and empathise and play along with this as much as possible until she could find a safe way to detain her but even she had her limits.

“When I first started the job I got called out to an armed robbery, nothing fancy, just at a local petrol station that had been held up. By the time I got there the one doing the hold up was only just managing to get out of there, as I got closer and they spotted me I could see them start to reach for a gun, thankfully I was quicker. At the time I was quite proud of myself but a few days later I got the message that they’d died while in hospital, they were only fifteen. The other officers told me not to think about it too much but I couldn’t help it. The worst part was having to go through a court process for convicting some other people who’d apparently been involved. The whole family of the kid I’d shot were there, tears on every single one of them. The family ended up having to sell all of their stuff and move out of their house because they had no money to pay for anything. Turns out I’d shot a kid dead because he was trying to get a bit of money to keep his family going. I know there’s a lot of people who’d say that youth today is just a menace and I did the right thing, but after hearing of what I’d done I realised that it wasn’t worth it, I’d rather have just let the kid get away with the money rather have that entire family on my conscience forever. Too bad we can’t go back in time to change things huh?”

Silence took over the room as soon as she’d finished explaining and it took a while for Niigaki to finally say something.

“Sorry to hear about that, you may not believe me but I think I sort of know how you feel. I-”

“You have no idea how I feel!“ Takahashi stood up, ran towards Niigaki and slammed her into the wall behind her. As she did there was a huge smash as the bricks all around the area of impact started to crack and a large dent was left in the wall. He stood back in shock at what she’d just done and looked down at her own hands.

“I’d say you’ve just about recovered.” Niigaki said with a pained expression, rubbing the back of her head.

The sheer strength she’d just shown had taken Takahashi by such surprise that she wasn’t able to respond.

“It’s going to take time to take in I know, but I think now you may actually starting to believe me.” Niigaki said with a  slight smile as she put her arm around Takahashi.

“There’s no way…I could have done that.”

She walked over to the wall that she’d just destroyed and put her hand against it, it was solid.

As she did a banging came from the metal door on the other side of the room, Niigaki went over and unlocked it.

“Is everything alright Risa?”

“Yeah, everything’s fi-”

A girl pushed passed Niigaki to make her way in to the room and she stood, staring, shocked at Takahashi.

“This is Tanaka Reina.” Niigaki said with obvious frustration at the girls intrusion. “She….she’s-”

“I’m a vampire too,” she said matter-of-factly.

In usual circumstances Takahashi would have just thought there was another nut job in on this whole thing but after what she’d just witnessed she wasn’t sure quite what to think anymore.

“You’re not finding it too hard to get used to are you?” Tanaka continued.

“Tanaka!” Niigaki scowled.

“Sorry doctor, but….well you know…..are you?”

“It was certainly a shock.”

“Well yeah, I’m Tanaka Reina, pleased to meet you. I erm, I heard about what happened to you and I’ve been visiting you a few times while you were in here. I suppose I felt a bit sorry for you and…I felt a bit responsible…” Tanaka was staring at the floor sheepishly and moving her feet awkwardly.

“It’s probably best if you leave us to it Reina, hm?” the irritation in the doctors voice was quite evident.

“Yeah, yeah of course.” she headed for the door but peered her head around just as Niigaki was about to close it again, “I’ll be happy to show you around the place tomorrow, I know you could use all of the help you could get right now, right?”

“Thank you Reina, bye.” the door was closed before Tanaka could get a response from Takahashi.

“Sorry about her.”

“So, she’s another vampire is she?” Takahashi finally said.

“Yes. I never said this would be easy you know, but this is the first time something like this has happened in quite some time.”

“Something like what?”

“Bringing you here to was something of a mistake, it may not make you feel any better but you were never meant to become part of this.”

Suddenly Takahashi felt a dizziness start to take over her and she had to steady herself by grasping on to the edge of the bed.

“Looks like that little show of strength took a fair bit out of you, time for another injection I think. I suppose you’d better rest too in preparation of your big day tomorrow.”

“What’s happening tomorrow?”

“Apparently Reina is taking you to see the big wide world.”

Aichan = :?

Probably another part of it is that once they realized that male vamps weren't as strong as the female ones, they (the female ones) probably just stopped "siring" any males they came across, and just killed/fed on them instead.

*AICHAN'S FIRST SHOOTING STORY*
Ah, that definitely could have played a part in why she hesitated in the alley. While it's understandable that Aichan feels upset about that first shooting, she needs to remember that the kid was/is just as much to blame for what happened, if not more so. Resorting to criminal activity, no matter how noble the reason for it may be, is a stupid and ultimately, dangerous path to take. There are ALWAYS alternatives that won't result in putting yourself in situations where you can get shot at.  Aichan just did what her training had prepared her to do.

Whoa, Aichan powaa.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh? Reina too? So then, Risa must have given her the same "treatment" that she's giving Aichan?

Reina feels responsible? Why?

Either she was the thing in the alley that initially attacked Aichan (perhaps due to some temporary loss of control over her powers), or she somehow witnessed what happened to Aichan, and brought her to Risa's lab to save her (perhaps even by becoming her "sire")?

Crap, it's the latter, isn't it? It wasn't really Aichan's destiny to become a vampire, she just became one because of the efforts of Reina (and Risa, to a latter extent)?

Oh great, now Aichan literally needs the injections to live?

Sorry for commenting so late but I've finally caught up on this story and I'm loving every chapter. Try to update soon okay? Cuz I can't wait to read more :)

Chapter 2

Something in the back of my head keeps screaming "VAMPIRES" at me, but I'm not sure if I should listen to it. So Niigaki's the "doctor"...doctor for what I wonder. :( Poor Ai-chan...
I thought Frankenstein :D How did you guess vampires? Risa is the doctor to make Ai feel better. In more ways than one :P

Chapter 3
Why does Reina have such an interest in Ai? And is Risa being over protective of Ai for a reason? Or is she just being a good doctor to her patient? Hmmmm need to read more to find out. Well actually, it's okay if I don't find out so soon. I just wanna read more
