I'm so conflicted. I actually wrote a long post about that docu yesterday, but deleted it since it might offend some people.
Then again, it's hard to sit back quietly to see my favorite group getting destroyed. I absolutely hated that documentary.
After the ten old gen girls graduated, what did they do to fill the gaps?
- They promoted the old KII girls who had been demoted earlier, so they will never has the talent or appeal as the recently graduated girls. Uchiyama Mikoto doesn't shine in any aspect. Saito Makiko is trying too hard to become the new Kuwabara Mizuki. Kito Momona has created more bad press than anyone in SKE48's history.
- Two persons got a good amount of screen time in that TV special: Oba Mina and Matsumura Kaori. Under different circumstances, either one of them would have been out of the group ages ago! And now they're making them two of SKE48's faces?! No thanks.
- The girls who ARE interesting don't get any screen time whatsoever. Isohara Kyoka, Kobayashi Ami, etc. I hope their election results will change this, but looking at Inazuma's senbatsu I highly doubt it. The only fresh girl who does get featured is Furuhata Nao, but she doesn't get much to work with. The long string of uninteresting S-Jo eps is proof of that. No matter how fresh you are, if you get paired with Kaneko Shiori for MC good luck making that work.
In addition, there is a complete lack of unity. I'm actually starting to dislike Jurina a bit, because she's acting like it's all about her. I can't blame her because she's been pampered and admired since she was 11 years old. It's not unlike Kusumi Koharu who got similar treatment, but got a bit high and might when she got older. Three examples: 1. Jurina pulling the chair away from Rena to win the musical chairs round. 2. Jurina smiling when they announced Rena's transfer to Team E. 3. Jurina's face when Ooya Masana wanted to be leader during the cooking battle. She may be the super ace and super talent, but she still has a lot of growing up to do.
In sum, SKE48 has changed a lot from the group I adored during the S2 era. There are too many uninteresting girls in focus at the moment for me to feel a strong connection to the group. My faith lies with Akarin whose smile will always be a glimmer of light in dark times.
