The Heavy Metal Thread!!! \,,/
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:49:17 PM »
Since the 'rap thread' is so big.. gotta provide some counter weight  :P j/k, we're all into other stuff. That's cool.

This music was such a big part of my youth... I was angry at the world and this music made the soundtrack of my life.

It started with Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Nile:

MORBID ANGEL - Enshrined By Grace

Cannibal Corpse - I Cum Blood

Nile - Execration Text music video

Then onto Cradle of Filth

Cradle Of Filth - Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids [Live]

Best performance ever. Truly an amazing band.

Then it became more melodic with old school Children of Bodom

Children Of Bodom - Downfall

And Epica! I was pretty good friends with one of the guitarist, but he recently left the band.

Epica - Fools of Damnation

Proper metal! None of that Linkin park stuff  :smhid XD

Recently got into the band Protest the Hero.

Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne

Their old stuff was more metalcore though

^Epic vocals, I like the diversity.

I don't really know BTBAM, but based on that vid they remind me of In Flames.

I'm actually surprised how many excellent metal dvds there are.

The Arch Enemy live DVD has epic sound quality (which is wasted on YT haha).

Arch Enemy - Live Apocalypse - Part03 of 18

And CoB's dvd was pretty good, even though their previous tour had a much better setlist:

CHILDREN OF BODOM - Live In STOCKHOLM 5/12

I'm particularly fussy when it comes to Heavy Metal. I can say hand on heart that I can't stand death metal/black metal/horror metal or any variant of it. Old-school metal is what I like best. I'm not a huge follower of what the scene is like at the minute but I'd have to say the best band right now is Machine Head. Bad attempts at nu-metal aside, The Blackening is an intense, heavy, riff-laden, head thrashing album that gets better with each listen.

^Gotta agree on The Blackening. Even though Machine Head isn't really my kind of band, the production on thata lbum is amazing. I love the guitar sounds on that album. The songs are pretty kick ass though, combined with the angry lyrics it makes for a great metal album.

The new Megadeth is pretty good as well, much better than (at least) the previous two. Even though I'm not that big on Mustaine's vocals.

Very nice thread!  I'll post a few more obscure metal bands that need more attention:

Anata
Anata-Downward Spiral Into Madness

Obscura (note the fretless bass action!)
OBSCURA - "The Anticosmic Overload"

Arsis
ARSIS - We Are The Nightmare (Version One)

Bloodbath
Bloodbath - Eaten

Blotted Science (an entirely instrumental project)
Blotted Science- Synaptic Plasticity

Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis - Silence Calls the Storm

If anyone is interested in finding more metal bands like this, just let me know.  I got tons more.

Immortal's release before this new album was back in 2002.  It's easily my favorite Immortal album.  I'm not a huge black metal fan, but that particular album is just ridiculous.  The new one is just kinda flat throughout.  Nothing is grabbing me like the Northern Darkness album did.  My favorite Dissection album is actually the one most people hate - Reinkaos.

The new Megadeth has Chris Broderick on lead guitar, and he rips!  He's also one of the coolest guys you can talk to.  He's one of the few guitarists that'll actually take the time and answer your questions on the forums he has set up.  That said, I think the new Megadeth album is on par with the last three releases.  Nothing will ever touch Rust in Peace or the entire Friedman era, for that matter.  Sneap did an amazing job on producing and mixing the album, though.  It's probably Megadeth's best tone to date.

Also, AtG = Amazing!   Easily THE most influential melodeath band out there.

It's close...  How about these?

CHILDREN OF BODOM - Lookin' Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoon

And then pretty much anything from The Black Dahlia Murder after their debut album.  Those guys always have crazy music videos.  :D

That was definitely one of the more ... eye opening music videos.

Morbid Anal Fog (The Most Famous True Black Metal Band Ever)

Man, black metal is too easy to make fun of.  :D

lmao, don't get me started on black metal videos

Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) - GOOD QUALITY

Agreed x3!

I'm a massive Jason Becker / Marty Friedman fan. I'm really into shred stuff.

Cacophony (M.Friedman , J.Becker) - Speed Metal Symphony

That cacophony stuff is beyond epic. Too bad the vid/audio quality is mediocre.

My top 5 guitar idols are:

Paul Gilbert
Marty Friedman
John Petrucci
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jason Becker

 :thumbsup

If you're into those guys, you should check out the Blotted Science album if you haven't already.  Ron Jarzombek really rips it up!  Ron actually played with Marty on his Exhibit A/B thing when he did his new live album in Japan.

Marty Friedman - Dragon Mistress 1

Ron even builds his own guitars.  8)  Harmonized sweep picking =

^Ah yeah I've heard of Ron. That's a great performance!

I also dig Ohmura Takayoshi:

Takayoshi Ohmura : Pleasant Surprise Live

Top 5 would be:
Hizaki (Versailles); He does some haromonized sweeping with Teru, awesome stuff.
Malmsteen; legend. Saw him live and it was just amazing. I don't care if he has an ego.
Friedman: love his Jpop remixes. The songs he did with Nana Kitada are epic.
Becker: Best ever. Too bad he got ill.
Vai: another legend, even though he relies on his wacky sounds a bit too much.
...there are so many awesome guitarists out there.

Ohmura is great, and his technique is easily the best I've seen, but he can be a touch robot at times.  Most of his influence is from Malmsteen, obviously.  There seem to be lots of Malmsteen clones, especially in Japan.  Not exactly sure why.  My favorite album from Ohmura is his Emotions in Motion album.  It's very well put together, and he's able to reserve some shred, unlike some certain guys.

Some more guys to check out:
Stephan Forte (Adagio)
James Malone (Arsis.  He shreds AND sings)
Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist)
Christofer Malmström (Darkane)
Lord Tim (Dungeon/Lord.  Awesome power metal bands)
Gus G (Firewind)
Rob Marcello (Danger Danger and a bunch of others.  Totally 80s!)
Mattias IA Eklundh (Freak Kitchen.  Probably the most hilarious shredder ever.  Easily the best usage of harmonics in guitar playing)

Talk about oldschool here!  30+ minute youtube video!

Mattias Eklundh - Freak guitar demo

Then there are people like Greg Howe, Marco Sfogli, Guthrie Govan, Andy Wood, etc. that aren't metal, but they're ridiculous guitarists.
