You could try turning updates off, reboot, then turn them on.
Also you could try in safe mode maybe?

hooooooly shit, now my comp is just purely fucked. last couple days ive been getting a lot of pop ups on my AVG about trojans and shit so been running a lot of scans and finding new shit each time. this morning something was definitely up so i ran another scan but it didnt get anything, but i knew something was going on. so i DLed Avast! and installed and rebooted so it could run an initial boot scan. it started finding shit immediately, but i had to leave in the middle and when i came back i had a BSOD saying shit couldnt boot up cus winsrv was missing. so i went on my sister's PC to look some shit up and get winsrv to reinstall it. i tried to boot my machine into safe mode and it wouldnt go... i tried a few more times and i kept getting the same screen about winsrv. so i said fuck it, and tried to reinstall the OS cus there's nothing really on there that I can't just re-DL. I tried to boot from the disc and it wouldnt. i tried a few more boots but nothing is working. Now its not giving me the winsrv screen anymore, but giving me another BSOD saying UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

I dont know wtf to do... anyone have any ideas? should i take it to fucking geek squad or something?

Do you know if you set the cd drive as first in the boot order?
You can do that from the bios, look for something to do with boot device priority and set the cdrom as 1st
If that's set and you still can't boot off the disk, it might be a bad disk or a faulty cd drive.

To fix Windows though, you really need to be able to boot off the CD. Unfortunately that might mean taking it to someone to fix, and they might charge you lots even though if you had the parts (another Windows CD or another cd drive to test) you could do the job yourself pretty easily.

If you do eventually get to boot off the Windows disk, remember to do a format to wipe everything that's on the computer so there's no more viruses and problems.

thanks dave. my sister's computer teacher runs a repair business so she asked him if he'd take a look at it for me. he's gonna take a look later this week, so hopefully since hes cool with here he'll either do it for free or little charge

I think virtualdub can open mkv, but the only thing I've been able to re-encode mp4 with is tmpgenc, and that only does mpg.

For a simple remux of mkv you could try AVI-Mux GUI.

There are many programs for re-encoding. HandBrake seems to handle mp4. A guide is here.

well, i got some files that are .mp4 and .mkv files and i want to play them on my dvd player(the one that has divx coded)

For playback on a divx certified dvd player your video files need to be in an avi container. Furthermore, the video itself needs to be encoded with either the DivX or Xvid codec. There is also a good chance the video also needs to be SD resolution (720x480) or less. The audio usually can be mp3 or ac3, but mp3 is a safer bet. Look in your player's manual for the exact restrictions.

For encoding there are many encoder GUI's, see for example here. If I had to recommend one it would be MeGUI.

Oh yeah, another thing. Sometimes I'd get this error after surfing the net for a while. But once I rebooted, it never happened again. What's with that?

^ that could also be due to bugs in a driver. It's something low level anyway because windows can't recover from it. Try updating the drivers for your sound card, video card, and network card.

quick question: i try to d/l a file on uTorrent and it says: one or more files exceed filesystem and will not save properly..

what does that mean?

Try checking what your "Filesystem" is listed as.
FAT32 supports only files less than 4GB, format in NTFS to save files bigger than 4GB. If it's a large file that may be your problem.

EDIT: Just realised I never actually said what it means!

Just basically that there isn't enough room for the file you're saving really, but sometimes a couple of little things can make this message appear even if you do have enough space; like the one I just mentioned above.
