Winnipeg hockey fans who support the idea of a female cheer team for the city's new NHL team are getting a cold shower from True North brass.
While 58% of respondents in a Winnipeg Sun online poll were in favour of the idea of a female cheer team at MTS Centre, the club's owners aren't busting out the pompoms.
The Atlanta Thrashers, the franchise being brought to Winnipeg by True North Sports and Entertainment, had its own cheer team known as the Blue Crew Ice Dancers, a squad made up of 18 scantily-clad young women who cleared snow, led cheers in the stands and took part in team promotions. But they won't be heading north.
"There are no plans for anything like you see in the States," said True North spokesman Scott Brown. "We will stay consistent with the approach we've had with the Moose over the past few years."
Last season, 23 NHL teams had a cheer team or a crew of young women who cleared snow from the ice during a mid-period break.
While several Canadian teams already had ice crews, the Edmonton Oilers were the first franchise in this country to start up a cheerleading squad, the Oilers Octane, last December.
The cheer team in Edmonton sparked immediate controversy when a petition was started by those opposed to the cheerleaders. The petition stated that the cheer team would ruin the traditional hockey experience in Edmonton. In an Edmonton Sun poll about 57% of respondents were against the idea of cheerleaders.
The Oilers' cheer team mainly performs in the Rexall Place concourse and in some areas of the arena's upper bowl.
Patrick LaForge, the Oilers' president and CEO, said the team created the cheer crew to enhance the entertainment value at games.
True North president Jim Ludlow didn't completely rule out the idea of an ice crew or cheer team further down the line though.
"I don't think that's on our radar screen right now," Ludlow said. "There are lots of things to look at, now and over the years. But I wouldn't think that's at the top of our list."
