Chapter 6: Another Day, Another Dime
A few days later, Reina sat yawning at the kitchen table, listening to the faint moving around of the other occupants of the apartment in the background. Her lover had cheerfully gotten her up at five in the morning, made sure she was awake, dropped her in the kitchen and then abandoned her to take a shower. If she wasn’t so damn tired, she might be a little pissed, but at this point she couldn’t even really care. She was vaguely aware of saying goodbye to the Niigaki parents before sinking back into her drifting state.
“Are you asleep?” A youthful voice snapped her back into the present and Reina looked up to see Risa’s sister, Juri, peering at her curiously. She grunted in response, eliciting laughter, “Not much of a morning person, huh?”
“I don’t see how you guys can be up at this ungodly hour and still be so happy.” The yankii complained as the younger girl took a seat across from her. It was like talking to a younger, taller Risa; there were differences, of course. Juri had long, naturally black hair and more and noticeable freckles across her nose, but the similarities were uncanny. They had the same soft, brown eyes; the same cute, button nose; even their dental structure was the same. The were polar opposite personalities, though; where Risa’s eyes shown with sweet innocence, Juri’s burned with an eager knowledge, when Risa gave a broad grin, Juri happily sneered. They may have looked alike, but they carried themselves so differently that it was almost impossible to mistake one for the other. In fact, in the short time they’d known each other, Reina had decided that the girl was more like her than her lover.
“Yeah, I know. I hate it, but I have to be up for school.” Juri lamented, blowing a puff of air upwards to ruffle her bangs, “I’d rather take night classes or something.”
“How old are you? What grade are you in?” Reina questioned curiously. They’d talked a lot, but this subject had never really come up.
“I’m seventeen and finishing up my second year of high school.” Juri replied easily.
Reina nodded, “Ah, you’re almost out, then. Another year, right?” the sister bean nodded, grinning, and the yankii returned the look, “That’s the same as my brother.” Her smile faded some.
Juri was silent for a moment, before broaching gently, “Do you miss your family much?”
Nodding solemnly, Reina replied, “Yes, very much.” they fell into a contemplative silence, broken when the yankii turned a curious eye to her new friend, “Does it really not bother you? Your sister and I?”
The sister bean shook her head, “I mean, it’s weird to see anyone cuddling up to my sister, but our parents have always taught us tolerance and acceptance of alternative ways of life, whether different religions or different orientations. I guess Nee-san’s just taken those lessons more to heart than I have.” She joked and Reina giggled at her waggling eyebrows.
“Trading me in for a younger model already, Tanakacchi?” came a welcome voice from behind as Risa entered the kitchen. Before she could even turn around, Reina felt a kiss dropped on top of her head before her lover walked over to ruffle her sister’s hair.
“Ew!” Juri exclaimed immediately following the question, “No offense,” she directed at Reina, who shrugged, “But ew!” She swatted at Risa’s hands before trying to smooth down her slightly wavy mop.
Risa just laughed, “Well, Mama and Papa headed out to Okinawa already for the weekend, so it’s just the three of us for a couple days.” She winked at her yankii wolfishly behind Juri’s back, eliciting a blush.
“So, what’s for breakfast?” The younger bean questioned eagerly, turning to her sister with a grin.
Risa scoffed, hands on her hips, “What? Why do I have to cook? Your arms aren’t broken!”
“Oh, right.” Juri winced, “Maybe it is better that someone else do the cooking.” she turned away to hide her mischievous smirk and Reina had to struggle hard not to laugh when Risa’s face grew red.
“What is that supposed to mean?! There’s nothing wrong with my cooking!” The bean exclaimed loudly.
“Well, maybe it’s better if Reina-san do the cooking while Mom and Dad are away.” The youngest offered appeasingly.
Reina snorted quietly, getting in on the joke, “Yeah,” she sucked in a hiss of breath through her teeth, “Maybe it is better.” she sized her lover up appraisingly.
“You know what?! I am going to cook now.” Risa stomped her feet and shooed them out of the kitchen, “Go on! Juri, finish packing for school! Reina, sit down!” she commanded, sending them both into hysterics. She stomped back into the kitchen and Juri made her way back to her room, giving Reina some time to calm herself.
When she had finished laughing, the yankii made her way through the swinging door and back into the kitchen, seeing her lover setting out some ingredients for what was apparently going to be an omelet. She crept up behind her while she was at the counter and wrapped her arms around Risa’s waist from behind, making her jump, “Just me.” Reina reassured in a husky whisper, turning her lover around and trapping her back against the counter.
They shared a gentle kiss, Risa reaching up to thread her fingers into Reina’s hair and using the leverage to pull her closer. The kiss deepened until they were making out hungrily for a long moment. When they broke apart, both were breathless, but smiling, “Now that’s a good morning kiss.” Risa exclaimed in a sigh as they rested their foreheads together.
“Hey,” Reina began, neither noticing the kitchen door creeping open and a small head peering inside, “Since you’re cooking breakfast, why don’t I cook dinner for you tonight?”
“Tonight?” Risa questioned, pulling back some to tilt her head to the side.
“Yeah.” Reina confirmed, “We can ask Juri-chan nicely if she’ll go have fun with her friends tonight, maybe spend the night out,” here she winked at her lover, causing her to blush, “and I’ll fix something for you. We’ll make it a date.”
“Well, I don’t want to make it seem like we’re pushing Juri out.” Risa said worriedly.
“Hmm, how about I treat all three of us to karaoke tomorrow, too?” Seeing her lover still wasn’t convinced, Reina smiled at her, “Look, if she doesn’t want to go out, then I’ll just take you out to a restaurant. It’s no big thing, either way, I get a date. Just, that’s it.” Risa playfully smacked her on the arm.
“Pervert.” she quipped with a grin that turned into a gasp when warm fingers stroked her stomach underneath her shirt.
“You weren’t calling me that when I had you bent over that kitchen table two months ago.” Reina growled into her lover’s ear, taking a light nip while she was there. A clearing throat made them reluctantly part and they turned to see Juri standing at the door with her arms crossed.
“I would like breakfast sometime today, thanks.” she said, raising her eyebrow at them. When she left, Reina followed her out, throwing one last lingering look over her shoulder. “Well, I’ll get out of your hair tonight, but you better make good on your karaoke promise tomorrow.” Juri stated as soon as she was out of ear shot of her sister.
“You heard that?” Reina asked in surprise.
“Yeah, but if Nee-san asks, I already had plans.” Juri grinned cheekily.
