Chapter 30 Risa shoved a fistful of popcorn into her mouth. Eri laughed out loud while hugging a cushion. The two friends were watching a comedy movie. The turtle was fully enjoying the humor of the film while Risa had a deep scowl. She would occasionally check the clock on the wall with worried eyes, but she would immediately drop back into her persistent, angry mode in a couple seconds.
“
I won’t go,” Risa thought, chewing on the popcorn without tasting it. “
She should’ve told me that Eri was getting hurt. She betrayed my trust. I won’t go…”
“Risa-chan, are you listening?”
“Huh?” The bean broke out of her thoughts.
“I said,” Eri repeated, “I called Tanaka-san before. Takahashi-san is still not home. It’s almost 10 o’clock.”
“Why should I care,” Risa grumbled. Even though she was still chewing, she took another fistful of popcorn and forced it into her mouth.
“Risa-chan,” Eri sighed. “I’m saying this now so you don’t regret it later. I think you should go talk to her.”
“No.”
“The incident between me and Tanaka-san is settled now,” Eri insisted. “There’s no reason for you to be in a fight with Takahashi-san.”
“I trusted her so much,” Risa shot back. “Yet she didn’t tell me the most important thing.”
“She wanted to keep you safe,” Eri argued. “Sure, maybe she didn’t do it the right way. But that
was her one and only goal. Think about that. I’ve already forgiven her, why can’t you?”
Risa didn’t say anything. Eri turned her attention back to the movie, hoping her words would take effect on her friend.
“
Why is it that Eri can forgive Ai-san but I can’t?” Risa thought to herself. “
Is because Eri is just that important to me? Or… maybe it’s because Ai-san is that important to me. It’s because I feel so close to her, I expect to know everything she knows. That’s why when she let me down, it hit me harder. Because she’s just that… precious…”
Risa jumped up from the couch, startling her friend next to her. The bean ran to the kitchen where the club advertisement was left on the table. She grabbed it and ran to the door.
“Kameha, you can go to bed first if you need to!” Risa yelled as she shoved her feet into her sneakers.
“Okay,” Eri called back, making a smug face. “Be careful!”
Risa dashed out of the house and ran until she reached the city area. There were lights everywhere, and people were still walking around. She started to ask around where the club was. She drifted further and further into an area she wasn’t familiar with, but she didn’t care. She had to find Ai, wherever she was.
Finally, Risa managed to arrive at the club. She spotted a couple making out at the entrance. As the bean tried to get through, the girl broke away from her lover’s kiss and blocked Risa’s way.
“Woah, there,” she said. “I need a form of ID to indicate that you’re at least 20 years of age.”
“ID? Damn it!” Risa said out loud. She had run out of the house so quickly that she didn’t bring her wallet.
“Rika-chan, she’s obviously over 20 years old,” the girl’s lover said. “How old are you, ojou-chan?”
“Um… I’m 22 years old…” Risa thought that this person was a boy but now that she looked closely, it was actually a girl dressed like a boy.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right, Yossy,” Rika said, smiling. “You can go on ahead. But don’t tell anyone I let you through without ID check, okay?”
“Ah… okay,” Risa said. She finally set foot in the club. When she looked back, she saw that the couple had gone back to making out. Rika was giggling.
Risa quickly pushed herself through the crowd. The room was really dark, so she had to constantly make sure she wasn’t running into a wall.
Finally, she came across the large dance floor, surrounded by tables and booths. Risa quickly scanned the tables. Ai was nowhere to be seen.
“Aw, come on!” Risa groaned. “
Does this mean I have to go through the dance floor? Ugh!”
Reluctantly, the bean started to push through all the dancers. Most of them were drunk girls wearing frightfully revealing clothes. Risa felt a hand slide down her back, and she jumped away. She shook away the chill and continued to scavenge through the crowd of dancers.
Risa finally spotted a familiar looking girl. Her hair was long and wavy. She was wearing a tight, black tube-top dress that barely covered her upper thighs. A different girl was grinding into her from her back. Her hands slipped down from Ai’s waist to her thighs…
Risa frowned as she clenched her teeth. She marched over and pulled Ai away from the grinder by her arms.
“Ai-san!” Risa yelled over the music.
Ai blinked a couple times as she slowly processed who was calling her name. She smiled.
“Gaki-san~” the drunk idol laughed. “What took you so long? I missed you~”
She ran her hand down from Risa’s hair, to her cheeks, to her shoulders. Risa gulped as she tried to focus on the issue at hand.
“Ai-san,” Risa started. “I’m taking you home, come on!” She tried to pull Ai out of the crowd but the older girl backed away.
“No~” she whined, her eyes half closed. “I don’t want to! I want to stay here~”
Before she could turn back to dance, Risa grabbed Ai’s wrist again, and dragged her out of the dance floor. The bean couldn’t find the exit amidst all the chaos and started to panic. When she spotted the bathroom in the back corner, she decided it was better than staying in the large room. The idol’s whiny protest continued all the way to the restroom.
Risa opened the door and pushed Ai in. The bathroom wasn’t half bad; the light was brighter and the floor was nicely tiled. The drunk idol staggered around in circles while the younger girl stood by the door to prevent any escapes.
“
What now, Risa?” the bean thought. “
What do you do now?”
“Gaki-san, why are you here?” Ai asked. Her words were slurred.
“I came to take you back home,” Risa answered.
“But I lost you,” Ai said, her face twisting with confusion. “I made a mistake and you left. You’re mad at me Gaki-san, aren’t you?” She hiccupped a couple times.
“No, I’m not mad,” Risa sighed. She walked over to Ai and touched her shoulders. “Please stay still, Ai-san. I need to think—”
“Liar!” the idol suddenly screamed. She pushed Risa to the wall and grabbed her wrists, immobilizing the younger girl. Risa struggled to break free to no avail.
“Ai-san, what—”
“You’re lying to me…” Ai said, her words still slurring. “You’re angry at me because I didn’t tell you anything… you hate me, Gaki-san, don’t you?”
“I don’t hate you!” Risa contradicted.
“But I lost you,” Ai continued. “You were so mad… you said I hurt you… I’m the one who hurt you…” Her face twisted in pain.
“Ai-san,” Risa whispered. “I’m not mad. I’m not angry. You didn’t hurt me. And I don’t hate you. I could never hate you.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“That’s… a relief,” Ai sighed, as she let go of Risa’s wrists and dropped her head onto her shoulders instead. “Thank goodness… thank goodness…”
The bean wrapped her arms around the older girl and stroked her back. At this moment, Ai just seemed like a child who found out she’s being excused from a punishment. Risa continued to listen to the idol mumble some words of relief until she fell silent. Risa realized that she had fallen asleep from the steady breathing in her ear. The bean sighed and said her own words of relief.
“Thank goodness… Thank goodness she’s not hurt…”
Then, she dug through her pocket for her cell phone and dialed a number. It rang a couple times before a low voice answered.
“Moshi-moshi?”
“Tanaka-san,” Risa said. “It’s Niigaki. I’m at the club with Ai-san right now. Can you come pick us up?”
The bean could've sworn she heard the yankii smirk through the phone.
"I'll be right there."
