Chapter 16 “Kameha, are you sure you didn’t get in trouble with the math teacher again?”
“Risa-chan, you were sitting right next to me. I didn’t sleep in class today.”
The bean shot a frustrated look at her turtle friend, who flashed an innocent smile back at her. Their homeroom teacher merely laughed softly under her breath as she watched the mini quarrel between her two students.
Risa had been, for a reason that she herself is not even sure of yet, looking forward to eating lunch with Takahashi-sensei again. But she had forgotten that she always eats with her best friend when she doesn’t have make-up sessions during the lunch period. And so, Eri and Risa and Ai were all sitting underneath the large tree in the school courtyard, getting ready to eat their meal. But for some odd reason, Risa didn’t feel comfortable eating with Eri. Actually, it was more like she didn't feel comfortable with the fact that Eri was eating with Ai. The bean refused to believe it was jealousy… just discomfort.
“It’s okay, Gaki-san, I’ll leave,” Takahashi-sensei chuckled. “You should eat with your friend. I’ll go join the other teachers in the cafeteria—”
“No!” Risa interrupted a little too quickly. Eri raised an eyebrow while the teacher’s eyes grew wide. “I mean… all those other teachers are going to bother you again, so it’s not a good idea to eat with them.”
“Yeah, Sensei,” Eri chimed in with a teasing tone. She stood up and skittered next to the teacher to link arms with her, much to Risa’s glaring. “We can all eat together. Except I don’t know
why our dear
Iinchou is being all
uptight about this…”
“I am
not uptight!” Risa yelled.
“Sensei, did you see that?” Eri said with mock terror on her face. “Risa-chan just yelled at me, her best friend! Kowai~”
“You know, Kameha, I found a really good recipe for turtle soup last night—”
“Okay, stop right there!” Ai interrupted, holding up her hands. “Let’s not get into any food references, shall we?”
“Yeah, Risa-chan!” Eri said, sticking out her tongue.
“You too, Kamei-san,” Ai scolded. “Don’t tease your friend so much like that; you girls are high school students so be more mature!”
“Hai, Sensei~” Eri chirped.
“Hai…” Risa grumbled, crossing her arms across her chest.
“Now cheer up, Niigaki-san,” Takahashi-sensei smiled. “Lunch period doesn’t last forever. Let’s start eating.”
After a couple more seconds of pouting, just for pride’s sake, Risa finally started to unpack her bento from a plastic bag. Eri opened her own bento box and waited for the rest of her companions to get their lunch out. The bean took out two wooden boxes and pushed one towards her teacher.
“The promised bento,” she explained.
“Thank you so much, Niigaki-san,” Ai smiled. That made the wrinkle between Risa’s eyebrows relax more; she wasn’t happy yet, but she was a little calmer.
The teacher opened the bento box and gasped softly. Eri craned her neck to look inside the lunch box and also chocked on a breath of air. The bento was elaborately decorated with various colors of side dishes. The biggest section had the white rice with a single umeboshi and some black sesame seeds sprinkled on top. In another section, there were rows of ham cut up into the shape of a star. Next to that was the salad with lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Right beside that was the fried shrimp, all crisp and golden. In another section, there were chunks of fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce glazed over the top. The dessert section contained apples cut up into the shape of rabbits.
“Niigaki-san, you really outdid yourself!” Ai breathed.
“You never make me a bento like that!” Eri whined.
“That’s because you can make your own bento, can’t you?” Risa shot back.
“Yeah, but I’m not as good at it as you…” the turtle pouted.
“We can share this together, Kamei-san,” Ai laughed.
“Sensei, yasashii ne~” Eri smiled, her eyes sparkling. “You’re so nice! I knew I liked you from first sight.”
“I’m hungry, let’s eat,” Risa interrupted. Somehow, it kept on bothering her how Eri was sitting so close to Takahashi-sensei like they had been life-long acquaintances while she was sitting a little further across from them. She wanted to be closer to them too… she wanted to be closer to Sensei.
“Itadakimasu~” the three women chanted. Eri took in a piece of meat from her own lunch and let out a sigh of satisfaction. Risa slowly took a bite out of fried shrimp while carefully watching her teacher’s reaction to the star-shaped ham.
“This is really delicious, Gaki-san,” Takahashi-sensei commented. “I haven’t had food like this in a while. Thank you so much.” She smiled and Risa could feel her heart picking up its pace.
“I-it was nothing,” Risa mumbled.
Why is my heart beating so fast? Whenever this teacher smiles, why do I suddenly feel happy? I don’t get it! “Sensei!” Eri chirped, leaning even more into the older woman next to her. “Can I have a taste of Risa-chan’s bento?”
“Of course, Kamei-san,” Ai smiled. “What would you like?”
“This one!”
Takahashi-sensei picked up the sweet-and-sour chicken and held it out for Eri to eat. The turtle made eye contact with her friend and smirked a little before eating the chicken right out of the teacher’s chopsticks. Risa could only watch as she fumed silently.
She is so doing that on purpose! The bean thought.
Kameha, focus on your own girlfriend and stop hitting on my Sensei! … Wait a minute, did I just say “my” sensei? What is wrong with me? “Ah~ oishii!” Eri exclaimed, chewing and swallowing.
“It does taste good, doesn’t it?” Ai chimed in.
“It’s really delicious,” Eri grinned. “I knew Risa-chan was a good cook, but I think the bento is even more delicious today because she made it for you, Sensei.”
“Kameha, what are you saying?” Risa yelled, feeling her cheeks burning up.
What is wrong with that aho turtle? “Is that so?” Takahashi-sensei laughed. “That makes me kind of happy.”
It makes her happy? Risa thought, a tiny smile creeping onto her lips.
Does that mean she…? “Risa-chan, you put a lot of effort into this,” Eri continued on, smirking a little. “Sensei must be really special to you—”
Before Risa could completely explode on her friend, the turtle’s cell phone started to ring. She flipped open the phone and realized it was a text message from her own special person. Eri smiled to herself and stood up.
“Sorry, I have to make a call,” she announced. “I’ll be back in a couple minutes.”
Thank you, Reina what’s-your-name, Risa thought.
“Keep your eye on the clock,” Ai warned. “Lunch period doesn’t last forever.”
“I will,” Eri answered.
As the turtle started to leave, Risa shot her a glare that said, “You are so dead when I catch you later”. Eri responded with a smile that said, “I think I did you a favor. You don’t know your own feelings too well”.
After Eri disappeared out of sight, the teacher and the class representatives ate in silence for a couple more minutes. When Risa finally decided to speak up, both women were already chewing on the rabbit-apples.
“Sensei, you just moved here, right?” she asked. “I mean, seeing that you’re a new teacher and all.”
“Yes, I used to live in Fukui,” Ai answered. “I just moved into an apartment near downtown; I have to take a bus or the subway to get here.”
“Are you all settled in and stuff?” Risa asked.
Wow, I’m asking really stupid questions. But I just want to keep talking to her… “Not quite yet, actually,” the teacher admitted. “I was planning on going into town after school today to buy some extra supplies I need. Things like kitchen utensils. I don’t need much, but I barely have any at the moment.” She took a bite out of the apple in her hand and sighed. “I’m just worried about shopping in such a big venue; I don’t really know my way around yet.”
“I can show you!” Risa offered quickly. “I mean, I know these areas a little better than you do. I can help you carry stuff too… if you want.”
I’ll probably have tons of homework, but I still want to spend more time with her… “Would you do that?” Ai said happily. “That would be absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much, Gaki-san.”
“It’s not a problem,” Risa mumbled under her breath, feeling her cheeks getting warm again.
Giggling a little at the bean’s shy reaction, Ai continued to finish up the rest of the bento. Risa ate at a slower pace while she watched the beautiful woman sitting across from her.
Could Eri be right? She thought.
Could it be that I really don’t know my own feelings? Why am I going so far for this person…?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
