Chapter 30 “Don’t tell me you don’t even know janken,” Junjun groaned, rolling her eyes. “Come on, you can’t be
that rich.”
“Don’t be stupid, I know what janken is,” Sayumi scoffed. “It’s just that… it’s a bit simple to make it our next challenge, isn’t it?”
“Well, it seemed like the last game was a little too difficult for you, so I went with something easier so you actually have a chance,” Junjun smirked, eliciting small giggles from Aika.
Sayumi scowled deeply, clenching her teeth. This yankii was making fun of her again! Part of her wanted to argue for a more complex challenge, just for the sake of her pride, but she knew deep inside that she would have no chance against Junjun in a physical game, even something as simple as running. The bunny knew her limits.
Besides, Sayumi had no intention of embarrassing herself in front of so many people, even if they were all her enemies as far as she knew. She and Junjun were in an empty lot, almost a junkyard, and it was already about nine o’clock. Unlike the last challenge, the yankii leader had brought the bunny to her gang’s headquarters this time, where the rest of her underlings were hanging out. Other than the usual two underclassmen that was flanking the tall panda, there were about five other girls now, standing around and watching. There was one short-haired girl wearing overalls with lots of necklaces and high heels; a taller girl with longer curly hair was standing by her side. A couple feet away from them stood another pair of girls, one with a black ponytail and the other with long blond hair. They were smiling and whispering something in each other’s ears. There was a shorter girl, not far from them, with longer black hair. She seemed to be the only one without a “partner” but she still seemed perfectly comfortable. They all had a very confident aura, radiating from them like gleaming diamonds. Sayumi guessed she should have figured that they would all be similar characters to Junjun to be in her gang.
“The rules are simple,” Linlin announced. “Best two out of three wins. If Shige-san is victorious, Jun-senpai and all of us will leave her alone forever. But if Jun-senpai wins, then Shige-san will do whatever she is asked to do for the rest of the night.”
“Wait, rest of the night?” Sayumi asked, raising an eyebrow. “I thought it would be for the whole day tomorrow.”
“You want to be my servant for a longer period of time, and at school, in front of everybody?” Junjun smirked. “That’s fine with me.”
“No! Tonight is fine,” the bunny said quickly. “I won’t be your servant this time anyway.”
“I’m glad you’re staying optimistic, Usa-chan,” the panda grinned. “Okay, let’s get started. All my girls are watching both of us. There is absolutely no way to cheat in this game. You ready?”
Sayumi nodded. The two black-haired girls walked up to each other, under the single streetlamp. Before, it was too dark to see clearly but the bunny could see the yankii better now. Her hair was the usual long-straight style with cornroses on one side. She was wearing a simple hoodie with sweatpants and sneakers. Sayumi definitely felt out of place, as she was surrounded by a bunch of delinquent girls wearing dark clothes and fancy jewelry. She was wearing a pink knit shirt with a white miniskirt and beige-colored boots. Her entire being was completely mismatched with the location and the atmosphere.
The two challengers put their fist out and let their knuckles touch. Junjun smiled with confidence and winked at the cute bunny in front of her. Sayumi ignored her.
“Here we go!” Aika exclaimed, standing right in front of where the two fists met with her girlfriend right beside her. The other yankii girls closed in on the game field, cheering on their leader. “Ready? Set…”
“Saishobu!” the two black-haired girls yelled. “Jankenpyon!”
The surrounding girls cheered as they examined their leader’s paper against the bunny’s rock. Sayumi pouted but she calmed herself down. She still had more chances.
“Continue!” Aika exclaimed, allowing the two challengers to put their fists together again. “Ready… and!”
“Saishobu! Jankenpyon!”
“Yatta!”
A wave of groans sounded as Junjun just smiled and put down her scissor as Sayumi held her rock high.
“I guess this is it, then, Usa-chan,” the tall panda said. “This final round will determine all.”
“I definitely won’t lose!” Sayumi yelled, holding out her fist.
“Ready?” Aika said. “Set…”
“Saishobu! Jankenpyon!”
“Jun-senpai sugoii!”
A roar of laughs and cheers arose from the girls as they skipped and clapped their hands. Sayumi bit down on her bottom lip as she glared at the ground. She knew she should’ve put out a paper.
“I guess I win again, Usa-chan,” Junjun grinned. She walked towards the bunny and put her arm around Sayumi’s shoulder. “So tonight, you’ll have to do whatever I say.”
“You… you better not be thinking of…” Sayumi mumbled, starting to blush.
“Thinking of… what?”
“You know…
that… I’m not going to do
that with you!”
“Usa-chan, I can’t believe you were thinking such dirty thoughts!” Junjun gasped sarcastically as her underlings giggled. “You know, I thought you were better than that.”
Sayumi felt her cheeks burning up. This girl was playing with her again! She knew she shouldn’t have been so nice back in the locker room.
“We just want you to hang out with us tonight, Shige-san,” Aika explained, smiling. “We occasionally all go out and do something fun together.”
“I think we’re going to a karaoke bar tonight,” Linlin said.
“What?” Sayumi shrilled, her face turning a little pale. “Um, no… I-I can’t sing.”
“You don’t have to sing if you don’t want to, all you have to do is just be there with us,” the short-haired girl wearing overalls said, stepping out. “I’m Shimizu Saki, by the way. Nice to meet you, Shige-san.”
“And I’m her girlfriend, Yajima Maimi,” the taller girl with long black hair chimed in, putting her arms around Saki and pecking her cheek. “Yoroshiku!”
“Ah… um… hai…” Sayumi mumbled, looking at her own feet again. She was never good at meeting new people. Everybody who knew her was aware of how antisocial she was.
“My turn!” the pretty girl with a black ponytail exclaimed, jumping up. “I’m Suzuki Airi. And this is my girlfriend Natsuyaki Miyabi.”
“Yoroshiku~” the blond girl greeted, smiling.
“I’m Okai Chisato,” the last girl said in a husky voice. “I’m the youngest, single, and loving it!”
“Liar,” Airi scoffed. “We all know you still like Maimai, we all know.”
“No, I’m definitely over her this time,” Chisato said determinedly. “She’s just so… you know! We always end up fighting because she’s so… yeah.”
“I totally understand,” Airi said sarcastically rolling her eyes.
“She was cute, though,” Miyabi said. “You’re going to regret it later.”
“Nah, not this time,” Chisato grinned.
“That’s what you said last time,” Maimi smirked. “I mean, if you don’t want her, than you don’t mind if I—”
“Shut up, you,” Saki interrupted, slapping the tall girl’s arm, frowning. “I don’t care even if it’s just a joke, don’t say things like that when I’m right here.”
“Ouch, that hurts,” Maimi grinned.
“It was your fault that time, Maimi-chan,” Aika smiled. “You know how Saki gets.”
“What do you mean how I get?” Saki yelled. “What are you—”
“Okay, stop!” Junjun ordered, bringing silence to the group immediately. “If we stay here any longer, we’ll never get to the karaoke bar. Now let’s leave.”
All the other girls quickly agreed and started to leave the lot. Junjun walked over to the frozen Sayu and took her hand. For some reason, the bunny couldn’t find the strength to break free. It wasn’t such an unpleasant feeling anyway.
“Stay close to me,” the panda whispered in her ear. “They’re all good kids, but you have to watch out for Maimi, especially.”
“Why?” Sayumi whispered back. “She seems to be the most like you.”
“That’s why I’m saying you gotta watch out,” Junjun grinned.
The group of girls eventually reached the noisy streets of Tokyo lit by streetlamps and store lights. Airi and Miyabi were in the front, holding hands and chatting with each other. Sayumi thought that they looked pretty cute together. Aika, Linlin, and Chisato were right behind them, playing around with a camera. Sayumi wondered what kind of relationship Chisato and this Maimai girl had, but they seemed to be going on and off by the looks of it. Maimi was smiling and talking while Saki stayed silent and grumpy. But she still kept her arm linked tightly with her tall girlfriend’s indicating to the bunny that they actually did really like each other.
In a couple minutes, the gang finally reached the karaoke bar. Linlin and Aika talked to the lady at the counter, who led them into one of the biggest rooms. There was a U-shaped sofa with a table in the middle with tambourines and set of microphones. Junjun led Sayumi in first to sit in the middle. Aika and Lin quickly took their seats next to Sayumi; they probably figured it was better for the bunny to sit next to someone she knew already. Saki and Maimi slid into the seat next to Junjun while Airi and Miyabi slid in with them. Chisato ordered some food from the counter lady before closing the door and taking her seat next to Linlin.
“So who’s first?” Junjun said. “Let’s start off with something lively!”
“I’ll go!” Airi volunteered, standing up. She grabbed the song listings and quickly punched in the numbers with the remote control. An energetic rock music started to flow out of the speakers as Airi grabbed one of the microphones. Sayumi read the English title of the song.
One Way Ikooru My Way? The bunny thought. She had never heard this song before. It was no surprise, really, since she rarely listened to music.
As Airi started to sing, Linlin grabbed the tambourines and handed them to Aika and Chisato. The atmosphere changed quickly as excitement and the energy level rose up in the room. Saki’s smile returned as she listened to the music and flipped through the karaoke book. Maimi cheered while paying equal attention to her lover. The food arrived in the middle of the song so Chisato and Aika got up to get the food and drinks. By the second chorus, Miyabi was also up and singing with Airi.
As Sayumi watched everybody enjoying themselves, she found herself pleasantly surprised. All these girls were yankiis in a delinquent gang yet they were still having fun just like regular teenagers. They all seemed pretty friendly too. True, who knew what they could actually do behind the scenes. She never knew Junjun could jump from the second floor and swing down by a tree and still be safe.
That triggered another memory from the bunny. She quickly looked at the panda next to her, who was drinking some soda out of a glass. When she put down the cup, Sayumi could see that the bunny band-aid that she had used earlier was still on Junjun’s hand. It wasn’t such a strong band-aid; how did it even stay on for so long?
The first song ended with multiple cheers and applause. The karaoke machine blared out a fanfare, presenting the score of 95. Saki got up and claimed the microphone as the next song started to flow out. She had picked a calmer, and a cuter song.
Kimi ga Iru Dake de? Sayumi thought. She was even starting to feel pathetic about not knowing any of these songs.
Aika and Linlin clapped with the tambourines to the rhythm. Airi and Miyabi took a drink and had some of the French fries before turning their attention to the front again. Junjun nodded along with a smile. Maimi seemed completely mesmerized by the sight of her girlfriend singing. Saki was only looking at one person as well.
What an odd relationship… Sayumi thought.
It almost seems like a love-hate thing but I guess Saki understands Maimi’s character more than anyone to get over her anger as quickly as she can… The ballad song soon ended as Chisato jumped up from her seat. A heavy rock song started to play out as Airi gasped.
“That’s not fair, I was going to sing that next!” she yelled. “And that’s
my theme song!”
“Just because you have the same name as the actual singer, doesn’t mean the song is yours,” Chisato shot back, sticking out her tongue.
Airi pouted and leaned by into the sofa as Miyabi just laughed and tried to cheer her girlfriend up. Sayumi read the title of the song again and found herself completely unknowledgeable once more.
Aa! Koi… she thought.
There must be a hundred songs out there about koi yet I probably don’t know any of them. Chisato sang with energy and confidence, eliciting a lot of cheers and tambourine sounds. Sayumi found that for such a tiny girl, she was actually a really good singer.
Next, Maimi jumped up from her seat and took the microphone. A fast paced guitar sound started to play out as Maimi even started to take poses.
“Maimi is a very good dancer,” Junjun explained to the bunny, “and so is Saki.”
Natsu DOKI Lipstick… Sayumi thought to herself.
I shouldn’t even expect to know a song anymore. Maimi danced charismatically as she sang alone. It was quite amazing how she could still keep her voice nice and even while she was dancing so vigorously. Her smoldering eyes were only staring at one person and that person was turning redder by the second. Everybody in the room had to admit that Maimi was pretty hot.
After the steamy performance, Aika and Linlin jumped up and went right into a cute and silly routine. Junjun started to laugh, recognizing the song. Linlin did a little bit of talking in the beginning before Aika started to sing.
“Osaka Umainen?” Junjun giggled. “Really?”
“Come on, senpai, join us!” Aika yelled while Linlin was singing. “It’s our theme, isn’t it?”
Wordlessly, Junjun grabbed the microphone that was still left on the table and started to sing. Sayumi thought that such a quirky song didn’t really suit Junjun so much. But none of the other girls seemed to think so. They didn’t seem very surprised when Junjun got up and started to do the silly routine with her two kouhais.
“You seem shocked,” Saki yelled over the music. “You probably thought that Jun-senpai wouldn’t do things like singing in front of everyone or something, huh?”
Sayumi nodded wordlessly, still reluctant to speak to a person she just met.
“Jun-senpai is really cool,” Chisato chimed in. “And I mean that appearance-wise and personality-wise. She’s a very charismatic leader and we all respect her. But it’s easy to get close to her too. She’s very honest about herself and she’s not afraid to have fun like this. That’s what I like about her.”
“Me too,” Maimi agreed. “But she was a little frantic a couple days ago, wasn’t she? She made Miya and Airi go with her to practically every single drug store for band-aids.”
“It was terrible,” Airi joined in, realizing the conversation pertained to her. “She kept on saying it can’t be any type of band-aid and made us walk around everywhere.”
“And in the end, she said she had no choice and just picked the little bunny ones,” Miyabi said. “The regular ones were right there; it was kind of weird that she chose bunny ones. That’s not like her.”
As the girls quickly turned their attention back to the front, Sayumi thought to herself. So Junjun had gone looking for bunny band-aids... which meant that the one on her hand right now was a new one that was the same brand… Sayumi blushed a little. What did this even mean?”
“It was you, wasn’t it?” Saki whispered, causing the bunny to turn her head. “You gave her that band-aid in the first place, right?”
“… Un…” Sayumi answered.
“… You’re special to her,” Saki whispered, smiling. “I can tell.”
Before Sayumi could ask the short-haired girl what she meant, the song ended and Aika and Linlin sat back down.
“The next one is mine too,” Junjun said as the guitar instrumental sounded again. She went right into the song as Sayumi started to slowly recognize it.
Only You! She thought.
Mama used to listen to this song sometimes… I guess this is a remake? Suddenly, Junjun dashed forward and pulled Sayumi up, forcing her to stumble around the table and come up to the front. Junjun handed a microphone to the bunny, who kept on shaking her head.
“I can’t sing!” she yelled.
Junjun just kept on singing without a care in the world. Near the end of her solo, she turned to Sayumi and leaned in closer with a consistent gaze, singing “I want you… I want you…” until the bunny looked away and started to let out her voice instead.
As the girl who had been silent started to sing, all the other yankii girls in the room started to cheer and dance along, little by little. Something moved inside the bunny, some sensation that she had never felt before. It was… excitement? She had never felt so confident and energetic before. As they reached the chorus, Junjun turned to her and pointed at her with a grin.
“Only You!”
A smile started to slowly spread across Sayumi’s lips. She started to mimic Junjun’s actions, raising her arms up and down, pointing while singing. Beads of sweat trickled down her back but she didn’t care; she was experiencing such an adrenaline rush, she wasn’t about to let go.
Junjun started to sing a long solo to herself again as Sayumi danced and bobbed along. She knew all the girls were watching her but surprisingly, she didn’t feel embarrassed. She didn’t care if she looked good or bad; all she cared about was keeping this energy inside of her at a high level. She didn’t care whether she sounded bad or not; Junjun didn’t seem to mind her voice one bit.
“Futari wo tsutsun de, COME ON!”
“Under the moonlight!”
She could even do a call-and-respond! She looked at everybody in the room who met eyes with her. Maimi and Saki were busy making out in the darkness but she didn’t care. She was having the time of her life.
Junjun sang the chorus, staring right at her with a smile. Sayumi wasn’t afraid to sing to her this time around either.
“Only, only, only, only, only!”
The song finally came to its close, eliciting multiple cheers and whistling. Sayumi wiped the sweat off her forehead and laughed, still finding it hard to believe she actually did that. Maimi and Saki were nowhere to be seen now but Aika and Linlin were shaking their tambourines like crazy. Chisato was fist-pumping while Airi and Miyabi clapped and cheered.
“Shige-san, that was amazing!” Miyabi commented.
“I didn’t know you could sing like that,” Aika exclaimed.
“I think that side of you is better than the quiet side,” Linlin grinned.
“She topped you on that one, Jun-senpai,” Chisato laughed.
“Definitely agreed,” Airi giggled.
“Gee, thanks guys,” Junjun said sarcastically, rolling her eyes, grinning. “You guys can continue to sing. I’m going to get some fresh air, okay?”
As the panda left the room, Miyabi got up and grabbed the microphone. Sayumi thought about sitting down for moment before deciding the latter. She met eyes with Linlin for a second, who smiled and gave her a nod, before walking out of the room.
Sayumi ran out to the front counter, looking around.
“If you’re looking for your friend,” the worker said, “I saw her go up to the roof.”
“Oh… um… thank you…” Sayumi mumbled.
She quickly found the stairway and skipped up the steps as quickly as she could. She opened the door at the top floor. The cool breeze hit her face and sent her back to dance in the gentle wind. Ahead, she saw a tall black-haired girl turning around. There was something in her hand that she raised to her mouth for a moment and dropped back down. Gasping, Sayumi marched up to the yankii leader swiftly.
“Are you smoking?” she asked, horrified.
“Um… yeah?” Junjun answered, raising an eyebrow. “It’s not a big deal, Usa-chan.”
“Yes, it is!” the bunny yelled. “Give me that! OW!”
Sayumi snatched the cigarette from the panda’s hand but immediately dropped it when her skin felt like it had been burned. She had obviously grabbed it by the wrong end. But she ignored her pain and quickly stepped on the cigarette to grind it on the concrete.
“Hey, you have to be careful!” Junjun yelled, taking Sayumi’s hand and observing her fingers. “You don’t seem that badly burned, thank goodness…”
The panda started to blow on the bunny’s fingers gently. The cool breath on her hand felt good as Sayumi blushed a little. She was blushing a lot today, wasn’t she?
“Th-thanks…” Sayumi mumbled, dropping her hands.
“Your welcome,” Junjun smiled. “But be careful next time, okay?”
“No, not my finger,” Sayumi said, shaking her head. “I’m saying… just thanks… for letting me hang out here today.”
“… Wow, didn’t see that one coming,” Junjun laughed. “So you enjoyed yourself?”
“Unexpectedly, yes,” the bunny answered. “I mean, all your friends were actually quite nice. It was… fun.”
Sayumi looked up and smiled a little. The panda spaced out for a moment, as she was caught with her guard down from the bunny’s cute expression. She blinked a couple times before snapping out of it and clearing her throat.
“Well, I’m glad you had fun,” Junjun grinned. She walked to the edge of the rails to look across into the city. It was a pretty good view, since she was about three stories up. Sayumi came over and also stood next to her.
“But don’t you dare ever smoke again,” Sayumi scolded. “It’s disgusting and really dangerous!”
“You sound like my mom,” Junjun chuckled. “She used to say the same thing all the time.”
“Used to?” the bunny asked.
“We don’t live together anymore,” the panda explained. “She’s back home in Hunan. I came over to Japan alone to attend high school here because I was able to get a scholarship.”
“So… you live alone?”
“Yeah. But I rarely sleep at my own place, I’m usually at Aika’s or Linlin’s or Reina’s… oh, that’s another one of my friends, by the way. She used to be the leader of the gang before I took over.”
“What about the rest of your family?”
“You’re really curious today, Usa-chan,” Junjun said, raising an eyebrow. “Since when do you want to know so much about me?”
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
“… I don’t have any other siblings,” the panda continued, cocking her head while giving a small smile. “My father passed away when I was young by a car crash. So you see, it’s a good thing I got a scholarship from the school that pays for my expenses or my mom would’ve had it hard.”
“What a good daughter you are,” Sayumi commented. She didn’t know Junjun could actually have this mature kind of side to her. But seeing as she was a much respected leader, she must’ve had some good points.
“Hardly,” the yankii laughed dryly. “Even back in China, I always got into fights and still smoked. I used to do worse things but I’ll spare you the details. But I guess I changed a little when I came to Japan. I got a little more easy-going. But I still can’t stop the little things. I don’t know, I guess since mom’s not watching, I just thought I could keep smoking. Pretty unfair of me, huh?”
“Very,” Sayumi agreed immediately. “That’s really terrible of you.”
“You know, your poison tongue is seriously going to hurt someone one day,” Junjun said, grinning.
“No, it won’t,” the bunny disagreed. She gazed down at the rest of the city lights. “No one listens to me anyway. I never talk in school. Mama and Papa are always busy so we rarely talk to each other. All the maids just give me what I want and walk away. No one cares enough to keep the conversation going. So I don’t talk.”
“No wonder you have no friends,” Junjun sighed. “You’re so antisocial. Whenever you open your mouth, only bad things come out.”
“And you say I’m going to hurt someone,” Sayumi said, rolling her eyes.
“Touché,” the yankii leader laughed. “Well, you can say whatever you want to me. I’ll be listening to you.”
Sayumi turned to look at the girl next to her, who was smiling back at her. Her expressions always seemed to taunt her before but now, it was gentle as ever. The bunny couldn’t help but smile back a little.
Then, Junjun’s expression changed. Something inside of her was different… Sayumi was different. There was such a difference from when she was frowning to when she was smiling…
Unconsciously, the panda swooped forward and met the bunny’s lips with her own. She gently moved against the soft skin, unable to stop her actions. She wanted to kiss her. She wanted to kiss her so much, she didn’t care much for the consequences. But why…?
After a couple seconds, Junjun slowly backed away and opened her eyes. Sayumi’s eyes were wide in shock. The bunny didn’t comprehend what she was feeling at the moment either. Junjun had kissed her before but this time, it was different. It was much slower, softer, sweeter…
But unfortunately, her first reaction was to slap Junjun across her face. The panda coughed a couple times from the shock and rubbed her cheek.
“Ouch, that kind of hurt…” she mumbled. Why didn’t she move? She could’ve easily avoided that slap.
I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, are you okay? “You idiot! That was… that was terrible of you!” Sayumi yelled, unable to say the words she truly wanted to say. “How could you? You’re a horrible person!”
“Yeah, yeah, what’d you expect? I am yankii,” Junjun sighed.
I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, that was completely rude of me. I’m so sorry… “BAKA!” Sayumi screamed. “Next time, I’ll definitely beat you!”
That must’ve hurt a lot; will an ice pack do the trick? With that, the bunny whipped around and stomped off the roof and down the stairs. Junjun just watched the pale-skinned girl leave, unable to stop her. She gently grazed her own lips with her fingertips, reminiscing the warmth.
“You’re not being yourself right now, Junjun,” she murmured. “Shikkari shite yo…”
