Chapter 33 The living room was silent except for the consistent ticking of the clock. The television was turned on as if to bring life into the room, but the sound was muted so it didn’t have that much effect on the stillness of the atmosphere. Besides, both Risa and Eri were too burned out to notice anything at the moment. They were thinking of their own problems going on at the moment.
Risa had felt absolutely lifeless for some time, which was quite unlike her. It had already been two weeks since she confessed to her teacher, who was loved by everybody in the school. Believing her love was something a little more special, the bean had taken the liberty to show her true feelings for Takahashi-sensei. However, Ai had been very straightforward with her and had made it clear that she did not return the feelings.
How could she be so cruel? She didn’t even hesitate to break her student’s heart, and didn’t even look at her. But Risa had considered the possibility that her teacher was just trying to prevent the confession from dragging on too long, so that the bean wouldn’t make a fool out of herself too much. That much was appreciated.
However, Risa
was embarrassed. She felt like an idiot, how she went on with a whole speech about how Takahashi-sensei always degrades herself when that wasn’t even the reason for the rejection. Who was she to lecture her teacher like that?
And so, as her self-consciousness got the better of her, Risa had been consistently avoiding her teacher for the past two weeks. Yes, she would see her in class but the bean had taken the effort to run into the room right when the bell rang so Ai would have to start teaching and run out as soon as the ending bell sounded. Takahashi-sensei had tried to talk to her for the first couple of days, trying to get a hold of her after class; but soon, she realized Risa’s feelings and gave her the space she needed. The bean appreciated that too.
But this kind act was only making her like her teacher even more! She knew she should give up now but she couldn’t help it. Takahashi-sensei just seemed so perfect in her eyes. She couldn’t even imagine anyone else to be with now. But she still couldn’t bear to face her.
As the bean sighed and hugged her legs to her chest, Eri clutched a pillow close to her with a cell phone in her hand. It had almost been three weeks since she last talked to Reina, and the turtle could not stand not having her cell phone at all times. She had thought about locking it away somewhere so that she can resist the urge to make a call or text. But then, she also thought about the slightest possibility that maybe, by some sort of miracle, Reina would forgive her and call her. It seemed a long way off, but it didn’t hurt anyone.
Junjun’s advice was starting to feel more and more painful. Eri couldn’t help but think, every day, that Reina had already forgotten about her and moved on. It kind of helped that Linlin visited her once and cheered her up a little, which was definitely a surprise. But if anybody was going to be nice enough to update her on news, the turtle knew it would be the younger panda. Eri had really appreciated her coming to Haro Kotogakko just to give her a quick pep talk to not give up since the kitten was still on the brink, although it made the turtle feel a little guilty that Linlin had to tell a small white lie to her girlfriend.
“We’re really pathetic,” Risa suddenly said, breaking the silence. “Look at us, we’re being total bums! The television is on but it’s on mute because we’re too depressed to even watch a show properly. That has got to be the most fail thing I have done in my life.”
“You know, the bigger question for me is why you’re lounging in my apartment again,” Eri said, narrowing her eyes. “I thought your mom was home today.”
“She is,” the bean sniffed. “But I wanted to be here.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m completely freaking out!” Risa yelled, groaning. “I can’t even control it anymore. I’m the iinchou! I’m supposed to be calm and poised but I’m losing it now! You have to help me!”
“What am I supposed to do?” Eri sighed. She really didn’t want to hear this right now. All she could think about was Reina. But seeing her friend going ballistic in front of her wasn’t all that fun either so she decided to help shut her up. “You know, Risa-chan, people get rejected all the time. There are a lot of unrequited loves out there. There’s no need to avoid Sensei because of that.”
“It’s different for me, though,” the bean moaned. “I completely humiliated myself in front of her. I told you how I blabbered on and on—”
“Yeah, you did,” Eri interrupted. “But look at it this way: if you keep on avoiding Sensei like this, you’ll never be able to face her, ever again. You’ll never be able to talk to her, even just as old friends. Is that what you want?”
“… No…” Never talk to Takahashi-sensei again? Just the pure thought of it was horrifying.
“Then stop being wimp and cheer up!” Eri grinned. “This isn’t the Gaki-san I know. You’re the type who faces trouble, not run away from it. You’re the most perfect person I know.”
“But… how am I supposed to act around her, though?” Risa mumbled.
“Act like Gaki-san!” the turtle said. “Be the you that Sensei knows and don’t show this weak side of you. Like you said before, it’s pathetic.”
“But…”
“And if you want my honest opinion,” Eri whispered, smiling, “I think it’s too soon to give up. Just because you get a strike out once, doesn’t mean you won’t get a home run the next time. I think you should keep trying. You have to hang in there.”
Yeah… if you truly love someone, you have to hang in there… “You’re right, Kameha,” Risa finally said. “I don’t want to give up yet. I’m going to keep on chasing her! I mean, I’ve never liked anybody like this before… and I know I’ll regret it if I let her go this easily.”
“That’s the attitude!” Eri laughed. “Make her want to do the chasing!”
Risa giggled along with her turtle friend. She hadn’t laughed like this in a long time. Eri really just had that aura and mindset that made people feel better about themselves. The bean knew she topped the turtle in almost everything—grades, maturity level, and patience—but the one thing only Eri had was that sweetness of hers.
“Well, I guess it’s only fair if I listen to your problems next, isn’t it?” Risa smiled. “I know what you’re thinking already but it doesn’t hurt to talk about it.”
“Actually, I don’t think I need to anymore,” Eri said, leaning back in the sofa and loosening her hold on the cushion. “I think that advice I gave you was for us both. Ironic, huh?”
“Well, considering this is you we’re talking about, not so much,” the bean teased. “So what’s your plan for this so-called brand new tomorrow?”
“Same as you,” Eri answered. “I’m going to hang in there until the end, except you’re going to be getting more active while I become a little more patience. I just need more trust in Junjun and Reina.”
“I think you would be better at my job and I would be better at yours,” Risa sighed. “Life is weird.”
“Life is complicated,” Eri agreed.
“Well, I feel a little better now,” the bean said, stretching. “Can we actually try watching some TV now? I think I’ll be able to concentrate this time.”
“You’re not going home?”
“Eh. I’ll stick around a little longer.”
Eri just shrugged as she grabbed the television remote off the coffee table. She stared at the cell phone in her hand for a while, before smiling a little and putting it down slowly. It was on the loudest volume; she’d be able to hear it if it rang. She really needed to stop being so insecure, it didn’t suit her.
The turtle aimed the remote at the television and pressed the “mute” button to turn the volume on again. As the sound of the comedy show filled the living room, the two friends got closer and leaned against each other, happy to have one another by their side.

Next are the yankiis

So I got so many different ideas swimming around in my head, I don't know what to do.
But I might just put it off until I'm actually near the end of this fic.

But recently, I've been very inspired by
Angel Diary by Lee Yoon-hee. My favorite comic of ALL TIME.

So I might do something like that maybe... kinda...
