Chapter 58 “And we’ll stop there for today,” Takahashi-sensei announced, closing her notebook as the sound of the school bell resonanted in the room. “Make sure to read tonight’s chapter and—Oh! Everyone needs to stay here for an extended homeroom today; our iinchou has a little announcement. Niigaki-san?”
“Hai!” Risa answered, standing up immediately. The first period of the day had just ended, completeing Takahashi-sensei’s daily lecture. The homeroom period that came after usually allowed the students to socialize at a reasonable volume during necessary PA announcements by the principal, but today was a little different.
The bean walked up to the front of the room and got up on the podium. Ai stepped to the side to make room for the young girl, and smiled at her. Risa smiled back shyly, before changing her face to that of a determined leader’s. When she cleared her throat, the room fell silent, curious as to what she was about to say.
“This morning, all the class representatives of the school have been instructed,” Risa said, grinning, “to announce start of Haro Kotogakko’s annual school festival!”
The room stayed silent as everybody stared at the cheerful iinchou. Then, the groans and the complaining started up as the students started to express their laziness, especially the boys.
“What, that’s the exciting announcement?” one boy groaned. “I should’ve figured, anything coming from Iinchou…”
“What are you trying to say, Kuroda-kun?” Eri yelled, standing up for her friend. “There’s nothing wrong with what Risa-chan says. Sure, it’s boring sometimes, and really annoying, and dull, and useless, and—”
“Not helping, Kameha!” the bean shouted from the podium, rolling her eyes. “Come on, guys, it’ll be fun. I thought everyone loved school festivals.”
“Don’t get us wrong; we do love them,” a girl with long black hair said. “It’s just really time-consuming and difficult to prepare for it.”
“Yeah, I know, Maa-chan,” Risa smiled. “And the PTA knows that too. That’s why this year, they’ve offered up a prize. One class in each grade that makes the most profit from their exhibit will get—”
“What, a piece of candy?” another boy scoffed.
“An all-night karaoke party, fully stocked with snacks, all covered by the PTA!” the bean announced.
This time, the reaction was not silence. Rather, it was cheering. Immediately, the tension rose up as the students started to talk amongst themselves as to how awesome such a karoke party would be. And the fact that they wouldn’t have to pay just made everything even more tempting.
“Maa, maa, minna, settle down!” Risa chided, bring the classroom to silence again. “I know it’s really exciting to have this kind of prize laid out in front of us. But if we want it, we really do have to work for it! So right now, we’re going pick out our exhibit’s theme and make some minor decisions. So who has an idea as to what we could do?”
“How about a café?” one girl suggested. “All the girls can dress in cute maid outfits and the guys can wear collar-shirts and pants.”
“Chii, the hot waiter at a café concept usually only works when you actually have hot guys,” another girl snickered. “And that obviously doesn’t apply to our class.”
“Ha-ha, you’re funny, Sugaya,” one of the boys said sarcastically. “It’s not like we would want to wear that kind of outfit anyway.”
“Okay, okay, so the café idea is out,” Risa intervened. “Any other suggestions?”
“How about a haunted house?” a tall girl with brown hair asked.
“Isn’t that a little too generic, Kuma-chan?” a different girl said. “A bunch of classes will probably ask to do that, so our request will probably get rejected.”
“Yeah, Nakki is right,” the bean said. “We really have to do something special, something no other class would do.”
“How about we put on a play?” another girl proposed. “We’re obviously the most genki class in the second year; no other class will probably have the guts to act on stage and all that, you know? We could ask to use the auditorium.”
“That’s actually not such a bad idea, Asami-chan,” Risa said. “Are you guys up for it?”
“I like it!” the girl sitting next to Asami exclaimed. “I think it could be really good if we do that!
“Sure, Ogawa agrees,” a boy smirked. “If it’s anything Konno says, Ogawa will too.”
“Yeah, you can’t take it just from Ogawa!” another guy said.
“It’s not just Mako-chan,” Chinami said quickly. “I like that idea too! I think it’ll be fun.”
“Yeah, I don’t think any other class would do such a thing, right?” Risako smiled.
“And I’m in the theatre club too!” Saki said, raising her hand. “I can easily get my hand on any script. We can use the costumes and props as well.”
“Alright then, is it settled?” Risa grinned. “Are we doing a play?”
“I’m for it!” Eri said, putting her hands up in the air. Many other students slowly agreed as one by one, each hand rose up.
“Okay, now that’s done and over with,” the bean said. “Now we have to pick a play.”
“Let’s go with a classic,” Maasa suggested. “Maybe a fairytale?”
“Will that kind of story really be enough to capture the audience?” the boy named Kuroda asked.
“I think just that fact that we’ll be acting in it will make it interesting enough,” Yurina said. “How about… Snow White?”
“Classic,” Risa grinned. “But I don’t think anybody is short enough to play a dwarf in here. Anything else?”
“Jack and the Beanstalk!” one boy yelled. “Everybody knows that story.”
“Yeah, but in case you haven’t noticed, Oshima, that cast involves only two people,” Makoto said, rolling her eyes. “How about Sleeping Beauty? I think that’s pretty doable.”
“Hm… yeah, it won’t too hard to perform,” Risa mumbled to herself.
“There’s a script for that in the club files somewhere,” Saki said. “I can get a copy for everyone.”
“Alright then, all in favor?” Risa asked. Once again, the hands started to rise up into the air slowly. Most of the girls agreed immediately as opposed to the guys who had a slower reaction. It seemed that they just wanted to pick something and get it over with, but that didn’t matter too much. “Okay, Sleeping Beauty it is! Now for the cast…”
“May I?” Saki said, standing up. The girl skipped to the front of the room and grabbed a chalk. Then, she started to list all the parts in the play.
“Arigatou, Nakki,” Risa smiled. “Well, then, let’s get this done and over with. Who wants a part in the play?”
A couple of hands went up immediately. There was definitely enough to fill the cast so Risa wasn’t too worried about that. But something else caught her eye, causing her to frown.
“Hey, none of the guys want to be in the play?” the bean asked.
“You know us, Iinchou,” Kuroda sighed. “We’re too lazy to memorize that kind of stuff. We’ll only be burdens.”
“But you have to participate somehow!” Risa argued.
“Yeah, so we’ll do manual labor,” the boy shrugged. “We can make the set and stuff… woodworking isn’t that big of a deal. Right, guys?”
Energetic answers of agreement filled the room. Risa sighed as she looked at the chalkboard with the castlist and then back to the class.
“But… we can’t have an all-female cast…”
“Actually, that’s not such a bad idea, I think,” Asami said. “That could be what will draw the people in, curiosity as to how an all-female cast fares.”
“Yeah, we could be like Takarazuka!” Makoto grinned. “Only without the singing and stuff.”
Murmurs of agreement followed, slowly convincing Risa. She looked at her teacher, who just shrugged and nodded at her to give her the go. This was a student activity; the class was free to do whatever they wanted for the festival as long as no school rules were broken. Risa sighed as she smiled back at her fellow peers.
“Alright then, we’ll have an all-female cast,” she announced. “Let’s choose parts, then. Any volunteers or suggestions to be the Queen?”
“I want to be the Queen!” Asami smiled, raising her hand. “I’ve always wanted to wear a dress.”
“Okay, Konno Asami as the Queen,” Risa said, cueing Saki to write it on the board. “Next is… the King?”
“Oh, me!” Makoto yelled, her hand shooting up. “Pick me!”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m already writing it,” Saki grinned, causing some of the students to chuckle amongst themselves.
“Alright then… the fairies?” Risa read from the board. “We need three of them.”
“I’ll be one!” Chinami said.
“Me too!” Maasa exclaimed. “And I volunteer Kuma-chan!”
“Eh~ But I think I’m too tall to fit into any of the theatre club costumes…” Yurina worried.
“We can adjust them, don’t worry,” Saki comforted, writing down the names.
“Okay then… the witch?” the bean asked. “Who wants to be that?”
“I think Sugaya would be great for that,” Kuroda snickered. “Very evil, right?”
“Oh, you’re funny,” Risako said, glaring at the boy.
“Actually, I kind of think you’d be good at that too,” Chinami giggled.
“Yeah, something about you screams elegance… and darkness,” Yurina grinned.
“Oh, come on, not you guys too!” Risako groaned.
“You don't have to do it if you don’t want to, Ricchan,” Iinchou grinned, shrugging.
“Well… if no one else wants to, I’ll do it,” Risako sighed. “For the class.”
“Honorable,” Saki snickered.
“Okay then… next up is… the princess?” Risa said. “And we need a prince too.”
“How about Nakki gets the princess part?” one guys recommended. “She’s the most experienced out of all of us anyway, right?”
“Actually, I wanted to be the director for this…” Saki mumbled. “Is that okay?”
“That’s fine, we need that too,” the bean nodded. “Anybody else for princess?”
“I think Eri-chan would be good for this,” Asami suggested. “Something tells me she’d be really cute with it.”
“EH? Atashi?” Eri said, pointing at herself as her eyes widened. “I-I don’t know…”
“I think Kamei would be good at it too,” another guy agreed. “Something about her being an air-head seems to fit the princess well… you know, how she doesn’t listen to her godmothers and ends up getting stabbed by a spindle?”
“… I’m not even going to answer that,” Eri grumbled, leering at the boy. “I mean, I don’t know if I’d be good enough to be the princess.”
“I think Eri-chan would be fine at it,” Saki said slowly, grinning as an idea popped into her head. “And then Iinchou can be the prince!”
“Yeah, I can be the—HA?” Risa yelled, staring at the girl next to her in shock. “Oh, no, no, no, I can’t be the prince. I can’t do that.”
“Oh, come on,” Saki smiled. “We all know you and Eri-chan are the best of friends. I think the chemistry you guys have will be really good for your parts. Who’s with me?”
Loud exclamations of agreements filled the room. Some even started to clap, urging the two friends to take up their parts. Risa quickly looked at her teacher a couple feet away from her. Ai had a small smile on, quite intrigued by the way this was turning out. The bean turned to the turtle, who just shrugged.
“Okay, fine, fine!” Risa groaned. “I’ll be the prince if Eri takes her part too.”
“I’ll be the princess if Risa-chan is the prince,” the turtle smiled.
“Great, everything’s settled,” Saki said quickly, writing up the names while a couple of the students cheered. “It’s great that you two are the main couple here; it’ll be less awkward with the kiss scene then.”
“Yeah, less awkward with the—WHAT?” Risa shouted.
“What did you just say?!” Eri also yelled, her eyes growing wide.
“The kiss scene,” Saki said calmly, shrugging. “You know, when the prince kisses the princess to wake her up from the deep slumber? True love’s kiss?”
“You guys are best friends; it’s no big deal, right?” Makoto grinned.
“Yeah, this is really perfect,” Chinami nodded. “Eri-chan and Gaki-san will be the perfect fairy tale couple!”
“It’s just one kiss,” Saki grinned.
“Ha-ha… right… one kiss…” Eri laughed nervously, slowly imagining the kind of face her girlfriend would make if she found out about this.
“Yeah… simple… no biggie…” Risa mumbled.
Except that we both already have girlfriends! One of which is in this room… The bean slowly turned her head to the teacher, who was leaning on the wall. The friendly smile that she had on before was now formed into a tight light. She was still trying to force some sort of smile but obviously, her face couldn’t betray her true feelings. She was not happy.
Oh boy… Risa thought to herself, biting down on her lips.
This isn’t going to be pretty…~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was kinda fun to write. So many new characters...
