"AKB48 sets new sales record with “Flying Get”

After selling over 1 million copies on the first day, AKB48’s latest single “Flying Get” has officially topped the weekly sales charts. According to Oricon, the single sold approximately 1,354,000 copies in its first week, breaking the all-time record that they previously set with “Everyday, Kachusha” in May (1,334,000).

They are now the first artist in the 44-year history of Oricon’s single charts to release two consecutive singles that sold 1 million copies in the first week.

Since their 14th single “RIVER” in 2009, AKB48 has a streak of 9 consecutive number-ones. Among female groups, this ties them with Pink Lady for the record. It also ties them with Pink Lady for the record of consecutive million-selling singles (three).

AKB48 now has the two best-selling singles (in first week sales) in Oricon history.
AKB48 – Flying Get – 1.354 million
AKB48 – Everyday, Kachusha – 1.334 million
Mr.Children – Namonaki Uta – 1.208 million
Utada Hikaru – Addicted To You – 1.068 million
Hayami Kentaro, Shigemori Ayumi, Himawari Kids & Dango Gasshoudan – Dango 3 Kyoudai - 1.026 million

Fukuyama Masaharu’s 27th single “Kazoku ni Narou yo / fighting pose” ousted AKB48’s “Flying Get” from the #1 spot on the charts this week. The single sold more than 155,000 copies, and it pushed Fukuyama’s all-time sales to a new record for a male solo artist.

Fukuyama has had 25 singles and 14 albums that ranked on the Oricon charts, and those works have sold a combined 21.271 million copies (13.167 million singles, 8.103 million albums). The previous record for a male solo artist was held by Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi, who has sold 21.224 million copies so far.

Fukuyama now also has a total of 13 number-one singles, surpassing Tahara Toshihiko (12 number-ones) and putting him in 2nd among male solo artists behind Kondo Masahiko (16 number-ones). Among male and female singer-songwriters, he is now in 1st, ahead of Utada Hikaru (12 number-ones).

Almost 1.5 million!!

Times have changed and the situation is completely different, but it may be interesting to compare:
- Love Machine sold between 190K-240K each week, during the first three weeks, totaling to: 634,530
- The sales totaled to 1.646 million after 31 weeks. That is crazy staying power and it means it is a massive hit song.
- It took Love Machine 18 weeks to reach the amount of sales Flying get has now.

This is just to indicate sales are relative. They don't say everything.
