Fuckin Loria (ex-Expos manager) is slashing budgets. shipping 2003 World Series MVP Josh Beckett to the Boston Red Sox for three prospects too.

B.J. Ryan signing by Toronto: a wild gamble for a team with plenty money. All closers are overpaid, in my opinion.

Rocket Roger not being offered arbitration by Houston: it might work out. Clemens won't be able to join the Astros until May and that might give him enough rest to retain stamina in August and September. He can pitch in the WBC, rest a few months, do light workouts in an extended "spring training" and who knows? He might post another sub-3.00 ERA in 2006.

I hope Frank Thomas is playing in the majors in 2006. He put up friggin' Ted Williams numbers in the 90s. We shouldn't forget about him too quickly.

Soriano to D.C.: Great deal for the Rangers and a downright shitty one for the folks in Washington, who are being blackballed by MLB interests who can afford to build their own goddamn ballpark. Soriano probably peaked already, still can't walk for shit, is a sucker for the low-and-outside pitches and doesn't seem to want to be a team player, refusing to move to the outfield. Good luck, Nationals fans!

Miguel Tejada-Manny Ramirez trade: you can trade their baseball cards but one-up superstar trades like these do NOT happen anymore. Especially in the same division.

I am quite surprised too.

Damon had a good role and a good home in Beantown. I didn't think the extra ca$h would convince him to leave (or Scott Boras to tell him likewise).

New York's offer was $52 million for four years; Boston's highest was supposedly $40 million. I guess that's a hella big difference but... jeez, it only serves to enforce the same stereotypes that have turned off generations to MLB: big cities get the stars. No bucks, no Buck Rogers.

Did the Yanks lose someone to make them want to sign Damon? With all the high-paid egos they've got over there, it's a wonder they can field a team without having a civil war. And Saburo, just because the big cities with the big wallets get most of the big-name players, remember that it's no guarantee that said players will work well together. If they all did, then the Yanks would/should have won all of the last 4-5 World Series. It's not just about the money, it's about the teamwork (or at least it should be).

They needed a centerfielder and a lead off hitter. They killed two birds with one stone by signing Damon. Also Bernie Williams wasn't cutting it at centerfielder; hes still on the team though...

That's a pretty high standard for team chemistry, even granting that the standard of excellence is higher in the Bronx than anywhere else in the big leagues. The cliche that "anything can happen in a short series" is not an exaggeration. How else could the Florida Marlins have taken two World Series titles?

Some of New York's best teams were made up of people who did NOT get along. The Yanks won back-to-back championships in the 70s with inflated egos (Reggie Jackson), moodiness (Thurman Munson), general purpose jerks (Graig Nettles), and a manager who was an alcoholic with anger management issues (Billy Martin). Not that this is the ideal way to build a winning team but I think this shows that a World Series can be won without everybody getting along. That winning play on the field can trump ice-cold personal relationships.

That said... the recent Yankee teams have been a hodgepodge of talent picked up from a myriad of sources. That they have been able to be such a cohesive group is a testament to the leadership of Joe Torre, probably the best PLAYERS manager in the game today. He may have problems identifying talent (his fascination for Ruben Sierra has been a source of much pique for Yankee fans) but I can't think of another manager in the big leagues that has more RESPECT from his players. I think that's a contributing factor to New York being in the postseason; in fact it may be the reason why so many guys are willing to join the Yankees and deal with the grinding New York media (comprised of people who criticize A-Rod after he won the AL MVP) or the shenanigans of George Steinbrenner (who has been tormenting people for generations).
