Jim Bowden, GM of the Washington Nats, was busted for DUI.

Someone on a blog made a good point: this incident will not get a tenth of the coverage of Barry "Steroid Nazi" Bonds being the target of fan debris.  All Barry ever did was hit a lot of home runs and create zits on his back.

Bowden, on the other hand, could have killed someone while driving.

You decide what's worse.

Derrek Lee has broken bones in his right wrist.  Cast for six weeks.  Maybe out for up to three months.

Wrist injuries are nasty and could affect his hitting when he returns in the summer.

Damn, my condolences to Cub fans, and I know a few of 'em.

Julio Franco, who began his pro baseball career before some members of this bbs were born, became the oldest player to hit a home run in MLB.  Forty-seven years young.  Remarkable.

Anyone here following the saga of Omar Vizquel vs. Jose Mesa?

Vizquel wrote some trash about Mesa about choking in the '97 Series and Mesa stated publically that he would bean Omar every time he faced him.  Well, Mesa is three-for-three and the last one precepitated a beanball war last Saturday.

What a colossal asshole Mesa must be.  I say suspend him for 30-50 games and a hefty (six figures+) fine.

Gotta be the shoes!

Actually...  how the HELL  can something like that happen?  I heard that it was only one (1) shoe that was mis-sized.  How the hell can that kind of thing go unchecked for...  eight years, was it?!

Just caught the news of Howe's death this morning...

Hmm, it would be tempting to gleem meaning from the passing of a guy whose record of substance abuse is on par with Robert Downey Jr.  I haven't heard any news about him since the late 90s so I assume he found some amount of peace.

I do remember his struggles with drugs back in the 80s and it's instructive to focus on the number of times that Howe was suspended by MLB for drug use: seven.

That's right: seven.  Seems like a joke, no?  What with all the tough talk coming out these days about "three strikes and yer out" and 100-game suspensions, etal. (Delmon Young probably picked the wrong time to throw a bat at an umpire.)  Clearly, Howe was someone who was busted again and again and again...  Jeez, I thought he'd be dead before the mid-90s.

How/why'd he get so many chances?  Me thinks: for the same reason that Jesse Orosco, a NON-hall-of-fame pitcher if there ever was one, was able to set a record for most games pitched in MLB.  Left-handed relievers were and still are a valuable commodity.  They're probably an OVERRATED commodity and too many roster spots are wasted on guys who pitch a few innings a month, but that's what's important to those guys.

Howe WAS a good pitcher, which brings up another instructive point.  If you're going to break a bunch of rules, make sure you've got talent.  If he couldn't get batters out, MLB would have thrown him to the feds long ago.  The double standard of star player treatment lives on to this day.

haha Mesa only got 4 games.

You know what drives me batty?  Inconsistency.

People of authority yammer on about teaching the youth of America what's right and wrong, and then do a 180 and confuse them even further.

Delmon Young IS going to have the book thrown at him.  Thirty games, sixty games...  something very symbolic to match the severity of the crime and the outcry from fans and media.

Know what?  Jose Mesa did almost the same exact thing: assault another person on a baseball field.  I'm not sure I want gangland wars fought out on baseball fields and Mesa pretty much admitted guilt by SAYING that he's GOING to bean Vizquel EVERY TIME he faces him.

Duhh...  Maybe Mesa can live with himself but I don't, as a baseball fan, want the pleasure of seeing him play a "kids" game if he's going to waste my time with his adult dramatics.

And again: what's worse?  shooting up steroids or throwing a baseball 90mph+ at another guy.  I guess we got our answer, per the Bud Selig School of Morality.

Ah, fuck all this.  Play ball!

...your take on most underrated/overrated list voted on by players. See the media suck Jeter's dick, but yeah Jeter deserves his accolades. Sports Illustrated anonymous poll among baseball players. I'm looking for the list/article. But underrated they have Michael Young. :P

I'll say this: Jeter is probably the most overrated DEFENSIVE PLAYER in the major leagues.  His range is shitty on ground balls and his arm is only fair.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the collected votes of guys who are lucky to be in MLB right now.  It's not like they know all the players, analyze all the statistics, see all the games.  Their collective opinion wouldn't be much different from that of a random selection of 470 general purpose baseball fans from North America.
