The Thin Line - Chapter 2: A Friend In Need
"Wait, are you serious?"
I rolled my eyes in annoyance. "I told you. I asked her to be my partner for this assignment, and she thankfully accepted it."
"Thankfully? You mean, you're glad that she accepted your request?"
There are plenty of reason why I don't like talking about personal things to Mariko, and one of them was this. She kept asking me if what I said was true, if she was having hearing problems, and so forth. It was fine at first, but it gets quite annoying every time she denies everything I said. I sighed in frustration, closing my locker with a little force. In the corner of my eye, I could see Mariko flinched in surprise.
"Look," I faced her, looking at her with annoyance. "If you don't want to believe me, that's none of my business. All I wanted to say was Yuko and I partners for this assignment. If there's something wrong about it, be my guest."
I looked at the clock on the wall that displayed the current time. I should be going home now, my mom would start to wonder about where I am by now. "I gotta go home now. I'll see you tomorrow." I didn't wait for her reply as I quickly left my locker.
I wished people would just stop with these rumors and gossip. They aren't very good to hear, and will leave the victim with most of the pain. In this case, the victim was Yuko.
She doesn't look like she did anything wrong. But since the rumor continued to spread (I knew because I heard most of the girls talked about how 'slutty' Yuko was), it left Yuko with the shame and embarrassment. I didn't think she deserved it, though. She can be a pervert at times since I sometimes saw her playing with her friends and knew how she grope their breasts, but I don't think she would sell her body just like that. Or was it just me being sympathetic?
I didn't know. I just felt bad for her. She looked harmless... and fragile.
I finally made it out of the school main entrance, and was on my way to the front gate. But as I was halfway there, I saw a girl kneeling down to the ground while grabbing some books and papers on the ground.
And judging by her height and hair, I knew it was Yuko.
I quickly came after her, and I knelt down in front of her with my bag laying down beside me. "Here, let me help."
Yuko's head shot up when she heard my voice, her eyes widening in shock. "Kojima-san!"
I smiled while I was still grabbing the notes and sheets of Yuko's books. "You don't need to call me by an honorific, really. It's fine if you call me Haruna..." I stood up and gave her a playful wink. "Or Nyan Nyan if you want to."
She looked away, her cheeks showing a hint of red on them. "I think I'll call you Haruna for now on." She then looked at her books in my hand, and realized that I helped her just now. "O-Oh! Thank you so much for helping me!"
Flashing me a dimpled smile, I somehow couldn't help but admire it.
Taking me the books from me, she noticed that I haven't left the very spot. "Why aren't you going home?" Her voice made me shook out of my thoughts.
"Huh?" I looked at her dumbfounded, and then remembered that my bag was still on the ground. I knelt down to pick it up, and slung it over my shoulder. "Oh, I was just on my way until I spotted you. What about you?"
"I was on my way too, until a group of girls walked up to me and one of them pushed me while I was holding my books." She explained, a slight glimmer of anger was seen in her eyes. I could see her hands clenching tightly onto her books in hand.
"Really? Are you okay? Did you get hurt or something?" I started to get worried, and quickly checked on her face and neck. She chuckled at my weird antics and shook her head.
"Nah, I'm fine. Besides, I hate them so if they get too far..." She put down her books and made a defense pose, her face scrunched up so she looked like a fighter. "I can kick their asses pretty damn easily."
I would be lying if I didn't start laughing very hard and didn't attract other student's attention. I saw Yuko gaining her composure once she saw a few students looking at us with weird looks. Meanwhile, I didn't stop laughing.
"Mou, what's so funny?" She started to pout, which was so adorable. I loved to see this side of her more whenever we meet again. I felt very comfortable with her. I hope she does feel about it the same way.
I wiped the tears in my eyes after my laughing died down.
"This is a really interesting side of you, Yuko. Or should I say, Yuuchan..." I winked at her playfully.
She smiled, almost as if she's thanking me.
"Thanks. I tend to make things interesting for people."

"Haru-chan, dinner's ready!"
"I'll be down in a moment!"
I couldn't help but wonder what kind of dinner will we have tonight. My mom was always the excellent cook in the family, the second best was my grandfather. But he died five years ago, so I always missed his cooking. Both of them were very close and had cooking running up their veins since God knows when.
Maybe she could teach me how to cook a proper meal someday. I remembered how I always messed up while I was cooking chicken curry for Mariko whenever I was in her house.
"Who was that, Nyan Nyan?"
Yuko finally agreed to call me Nyan Nyan, since she found my little 'Nyaa~' sound oddly cute. In fact, I waited for the day where she will call me by that nickname I came up with. Well, Mariko helped me pick which nickname suited me.
"Oh, it was my mom. She told me it's dinner time. So, I guess we could continue this later?" I said, holding my phone in my hand.
I heard her giggle, making me wonder why until she spoke up. "Haru-chan, huh?"
"Shut up, she come up with that when I was still little." I was so thankful that we were having a conversation through phone, other wise she would've seen how red my cheeks were.
"I was just joking. Pretty good nickname, actually." I could hear her smile when she said that, even though I couldn't see her. "Thanks again for helping me today. I really appreciated it."
"What can I say?" Now it's my turn to smile. "A friend in need is a friend indeed."
