Trail Blazers Great, Kevin Duckworth Passes Away

Kevin Duckworth, 44, a two-time NBA All-Star who starred on Western Conference Championship teams in Portland in 1990 and 1992, passed away Monday evening in Gleneden Beach, Oregon.

A member of the Trail Blazers from 1986-93, the 7-footer - affectionately known to Trail Blazers fans simply as "Duck" - also played for San Antonio, Washington, Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Clippers during his 11-year NBA career.

Rest in peace, Duck. :prayers:

China's Sun next rising NBA star

The Olympics is always a great time for NBA scouts to assess the pool of new talent China has to offer. Menk Bateer (Atlanta 1996), Wang Zhizhi (Sydney 2000) and Yi Jianlian (Athens 2004), for example, all had their first exposure to NBA teams at Olympic competitions.

So which basketball star have NBA scouts had their eyes on in Beijing? His name is Sun Yue.

The 2.06m point guard played a key role in China's advance to the Olympic quarterfinals. He didn't score much, but his ability to run the team's offense has made him an important player for Team China, which has longed for a decent guard for a while. His performance has also driven up his stock as a future NBA player.

NBA Players Grab Up Plenty of Medals in Beijing

NEW YORK, Aug. 25, 2008 – The U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team defeated Spain in Sunday’s gold medal game in Beijing, bringing the total to 24 current or former NBA players who earned medals at the 2008 Olympic Games. Argentina defeated Lithuania for the bronze medal.

The NBA was well represented on the rosters for the men’s basketball competition at the 2008 Olympic Games. A total of 42 current and former NBA players were on the 12 Olympic rosters, the highest number since NBA players began participating in the Olympics in 1992. Ten Olympic teams had at least one current or former player on their roster.

Oklahoma City franchise to unveil team name, colors in Sept. 3 ceremony

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City's new NBA franchise has finally set a date to announce its name and team colors.

The team said Wednesday that it would unveil the name and colors simultaneously on its Web site and at a downtown event Sept. 3.

Clay Bennett's ownership group has applied for trademarks for six names: Thunder, Energy, Wind, Marshalls, Barons and Bison.

Oklahoma City television station KOCO has reported that the choice will be Thunder, but Bennett has refused to comment on what the name will be.

The former Seattle SuperSonics announced on July 2 that they would be moving to Oklahoma City.

With Ellis out, what will the Warriors do now?

Ever since Baron Davis abandoned the reins to Golden State's offense, we've wondered if Monta Ellis could physically hold up in the role of full-time quarterback. It didn't even take a week of training camp to find out. Apparently a summertime pickup game was enough to knock Ellis out of commission for three months, following surgery Wednesday to repair a severe ankle sprain. The timetable puts his return at least one month into the season -- and it has to put doubt about his readiness to be The Man into the minds of Warriors fans.

The NBA will host events in the cities as part of its Sichuan Province earthquake relief efforts.

The games will be televised live in the United States.

Rockets trade Ewing Jr. to Knicks for Weis' draft rights

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks acquired Patrick Ewing Jr. in a trade with the Houston Rockets on Friday.

New York sent the draft rights for center Frederic Weis to Houston in exchange for the son of former superstar Patrick Ewing, who played for the Knicks from 1985-2000.

Franchise's move to Oklahoma City under way as trucks arrive

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The NBA officially handed over the Seattle franchise to Oklahoma City about two months ago, and three trucks arrived downtown at headquarters on Friday.

The first thing to roll off the truck was a basketball with the NBA logo.

"It was a nice touch, wasn't it?" said Pete Winemiller, a team vice president for guest relations who helped oversee the move.

Ginobili to undergo surgery to fix injured ligament

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili says he needs arthroscopic surgery to repair a ligament injury to his left ankle.

"They're going to operate on me," the 31-year-old told Argentina's La Nacion newspaper Friday.

Manu needs the surgery, for sure, and he just might be all healed up and ready at the start of the season... hopefully.

As Donaghy's prison term begins, resolution remains elusive

While NBA clubs gear up for the start of another training camp, disgraced referee Tim Donaghy is scheduled to begin serving a 15-month sentence Tuesday at a minimum-security federal prison camp in Pensacola, Fla.

Donaghy, a veteran of 13 NBA seasons, created a public-relations nightmare for the league when he pleaded guilty last year to felony gambling charges. Two other gamblers who attended a Philadelphia-area high school with Donaghy -- James "Baba" Battista and Thomas Martino -- also pleaded guilty in the tips-for-payoffs gambling scheme. Battista was sentenced to 15 months; Martino to a year.

Colangelo leaning toward run in London with USA Basketball

PHOENIX -- After building an Olympic gold medal-winning team, Jerry Colangelo might make a run at another championship with USA Basketball.

"I'm kind of leaning toward continuing, but we still have some things that we're talking through just in terms of organization," Colangelo said Monday at a luncheon benefiting the Special Olympics of Arizona. "I'm kind of inclined to continue because it is my connection" to basketball.

Colangelo, the former Phoenix Suns owner, took over as USA Basketball's managing director in 2005. He appointed Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski to lead the team and, in a change of policy, required players to make a three-year commitment.

The Americans swept the gold medal in Beijing, their first in a major international tournament since 2000.

"It's my call whether I want to continue and get ready for London in 2012," Colangelo said. "You know what's really great? The infrastructure is in place for USA Basketball going forward."

Colangelo said he's not sure if his duties would change. The U.S.' next major competition is the 2010 world championships in Turkey.

Veteran Kings forward Abdur-Rahim retires after 12 seasons

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim retired Monday because of a persistent right knee injury.

The 31-year-old Abdur-Rahim played 12 NBA seasons for four teams, beginning his career in 1996 when the Vancouver Grizzlies made him the third overall draft pick. The 2002 All-Star averaged 18.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in his career, but the power forward reached the playoffs just once, with the Kings in 2006.

He appeared in just six games last season before getting season-ending surgery in December on his long-injured right knee. The former California star had two surgeries on his knee in six months last year to clean out the joint, but the pace of his recovery was frustratingly slow.

"I came to grips with the fact that, health-wise, I won't be able to get back to the condition and level that is needed to play in the NBA," Abdur-Rahim said. "My right knee has become arthritic over the years, and is to the point where it won't allow me do the things and play at the level at which I'm accustomed to playing. As tough as it is to come to grips with, it's the reality."

Abdur-Rahim also played for Atlanta and Portland before joining the Kings in 2005. He averaged at least 18.7 points in each of his first 7½ NBA seasons while becoming the sixth-youngest player in NBA history to score 10,000 points, but knee problems plagued his three years with the Kings.

"He has had an exemplary career as a player and citizen," said Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations. "It is unfortunate for any productive career to be felled by injury. However, no one can ever doubt Shareef's effort, commitment or desire to excel."

The Kings plan to hire Abdur-Rahim to fill a yet-to-be-determined job with the organization, Petrie said.

Spanish guard Fernandez receives warm welcome upon arrival in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- More than 100 fans welcomed Spanish guard Rudy Fernandez to the Portland Trail Blazers upon his arrival to the city with chants of "Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!"

"It was a good surprise," Fernandez said. "When I arrived, I say, 'OK, let's go practice now. Let's go.'"

The 6-foot-6 Olympian arrived at Portland International Airport on Monday and was whisked to the Rose Garden, where the Blazers held a news conference to introduce him.

"He's a team player. He's a great kid," general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "I think he'll raise the level of competition for everyone."

Fernandez played for Spain in Beijing, scoring 22 points in the gold medal game against the United States. The U.S. team won, 118-107.

Portland coach Nate McMillan was an assistant coach for the U.S. team. He and some of the other coaches went to watch Spain during the competition, with Kobe Bryant tagging along.

McMillan recounted how Bryant said to him: "He's your kid, huh? He's pretty good."

Pritchard said the team would give Fernandez time to acclimate to Portland and find a place to live. The Blazers would work on getting him a tutor to help him with his English.

The Trail Blazers open training camp Sept. 30 at the team's practice facility in Tualatin, Ore. The team opens preseason play against Sacramento on Oct. 7 at the Rose Garden Arena.

McMillan said the team would also give Fernandez time to catch up on the NBA style of play.

"But once he does, he's going to be a special player," McMillan said.

Fernandez has played the past seven seasons for DKV Joventut Badalona of the Spanish ACB League. Last season he averaged 21.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals for the team, which won both the ULEB Cup and the Copa del Rey.

Portland acquired Fernandez in a trade with Phoenix during the 2007 NBA draft.

"My dream is to play against the best players in the world and Portland gave me that opportunity," he said.

Fernandez is good friends with Blazers guard Sergio Rodriguez, who is also from Spain.

Report: Knicks prepare to waive Marbury by end of week

Stephon Marbury may be in shape physically to join the Knicks on the court, but the Knicks might finally be ready mentally to part ways with their chaotic point guard.

The Knicks are preparing to put Marbury on waivers by the end of the week, several sources with knowledge of the situation told Newsday. The team must await the go-ahead from Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, however, because it would involve eating another large chunk of money in a buyout, Newsday reported.

Marbury is entering the final year of his contract, worth $21.9 million.

Once Marbury clears waivers and a buyout is agreed upon, he would be free to sign with any team. Reports in Newsday and the South Florida media have mentioned the Miami Heat, which is in need of a point guard, as having interest.

According to Newsday, Marbury has recovered from January's left ankle surgery, which was needed to remove bone spurs, and has worked out all summer in Southern California, trimming his weight to 200 pounds.

He did not join the other Knicks veterans for scrimmages at the team's training center until Monday, even though the informal workouts had been going on since last week.

Marbury's best performance statistically in 4½ seasons with the Knicks was in 2004-05, when he averaged 21.7 points and 8.1 assists a game. Since then, his numbers have declined, even as his feuding with his bosses and his teammates increased.

Marbury had numerous conflicts with former Knicks coaches Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas. The low point may have been in November 2007, when Marbury left without permission and returned to New York while the team was in Phoenix for a game.

The Knicks signed guard Anthony Roberson in July, a further indication that they were ready to jettison Marbury. Roberson played 36 career NBA games with Memphis and Golden State, but spent last season in Turkey and Israel. The Knicks signed him to a deal after he averaged 14.8 points in five games for their summer league team.

Report: Ellis was injured in moped accident, not playing hoop

Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis' ankle injury was the result of a moped accident and did not occur while he was playing pickup basketball, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing sources close to the team.

Ellis, 22, who signed a six-year, $66 million contract extension with the Warriors during the offseason, tore a ligament in his left ankle and sustained a high-ankle sprain in what one of the sources said was a "low-speed" moped accident, according to the report. He underwent surgery in late August and is expected to be sidelined for another two months.

The Warriors and Ellis' agent, Jeff Fried, declined to comment on the report, according to the newspaper.

Riding a moped is prohibited under the uniform player contract, which means the Warriors could tear up Ellis' contract. But according to sources, the team and Ellis are still working through the situation. A decision on discipline won't be made until next week, according to the report.

The circumstances surrounding Ellis' injury were not clear, even to team officials, in the days immediately following the incident. Ellis initially told team vice president Chris Mullin that he got hurt during a pickup basketball game in Jackson, Miss. But according to reports, team officials were skeptical about Ellis' explanation because of the severity of the injury.

Two years ago, Los Angeles Lakers forward Vladimir Radmanovic separated his shoulder in a snowboarding accident. Radmanovic, who at first said he had slipped and fell on a patch of ice, was fined $500,000 by the team.

Ellis averaged 20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists last season, after winning NBA Most Improved Player honors after the 2006-07 season when he averaged 16.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Owner: Speculation that LeBron will leave Cleveland 'insult to the city'

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- LeBron James may wear a New York Yankees hat everywhere from his hometown of Akron to Beijing, but Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert thinks rampant speculation that the superstar will leave Cleveland in two years is "an insult to the city."

Gilbert said James has given him no indication that he plans to leave for New York after his contract expires in 2010. He called the talk of his departure nothing more than conjecture from bored sports reporters.

"It's kind of an insult to the city of Cleveland in my opinion -- an insult to the Midwest," said Gilbert, who spoke to the media at the Cavaliers' suburban practice facility Thursday, a few days before the team opens training camp.

Mullin hopes Ellis will learn from injury sustained in mo-ped accident

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Chris Mullin hopes Monta Ellis learned something about maturity when a misadventure with a mo-ped left the Golden State guard with a severely sprained ankle.

The Warriors still haven't decided whether Ellis will feel that lesson in his wallet as well.

Mullin, the Warriors' top basketball executive, and coach Don Nelson tried Thursday to stay out of the debate about whether the Warriors will fine Ellis for participating in an offseason activity prohibited in the guard's new six-year, $66 million contract. Ellis will miss training camp and at least several weeks of the regular season after injuring his left ankle last month in his native Mississippi.

Jackson looking to bring out increased toughness from within

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- This was Phil Jackson talking about the Los Angeles Lakers, not your ordinary speaker or subject by any means, and yet even after 1,300 words it was hard to escape the bottom line that this team's season will be about the same old NBA themes of minutes and money. Oh, and one other "m" word of particular concern to the Lakers: mettle.

They were humbled by the Boston Celtics in the Finals, sent slinking off into the summer like scolded puppies, but any increased toughness will have to come from within. The only significant changes to the way this roster looked in the second half of the season will be the returns from injury of Andrew Bynum and Trevor Ariza. That will alter the starting lineup, with Bynum at center, Pau Gasol at power forward and Lamar Odom shifting to small forward -- and possibly sixth man.

Power Rankings: Best and worst over past six seasons

As we approach the seventh season that ESPN.com has entrusted me with its NBA Power Rankings, this seemed like the perfect appetizer.

Remember that "surprise" we vaguely mentioned in our final regular-season helping on April 14? As requested by a few loyal readers, we have tallied up how all 30 clubs have fared with the committee (of one) since the 2002-03 campaign.

We've clicked back through the archives to find the rankings highs, lows and average placement for every team in our weekly, thoroughly un-automated pulse take of the league. The annual batch of rankings that will take us into training camp for the start of the 2008-09 season is coming Monday.

Williams decides to retire two months after signing with Clippers

LOS ANGELES -- Jason Williams announced his retirement Friday, ending his 10-year NBA career less than two months after signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Williams, who helped the Miami Heat to the NBA title in 2006, averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and shot 39.6 percent from the floor in 679 games.

The point guard was drafted seventh overall pick in 1998 out of Florida by the Sacramento Kings and averaged 12.8 points and six assists as a rookie.

Williams joined the Memphis Grizzlies three years later, and in 2001-02 averaged 14.8 points and eight assists. In four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club's career assists leader.

He played for the Heat from 2005-2008, and started all 23 playoff games in Miami's title run. He signed with the Clippers on Aug. 7.

Summer Olympians Bryant, Gasol might sit out preseason games to rest

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol might sit out some of the Los Angeles Lakers' preseason games after a hectic offseason.

Bryant helped lead the United States to a victory over Gasol and Spain in the gold medal game in the Summer Olympics. Bryant and Gasol each took only a few weeks off before reporting for the first day of training camp Tuesday.

Bryant and Gasol played a carefree game of one-on-one near the end of the first of the Lakers' two practices. Their teammates, meanwhile, ran a set of wind sprints at the conclusion of their morning workout.

"This week I'm just seeing how they feel, how's their energy level, and then we'll adjust," coach Phil Jackson said. "I was told not to say that I wasn't going to play Kobe in exhibition games.

"So I'm not going to say Kobe's not going to play in this exhibition game or that exhibition game. But there is a chance they may not play in an exhibition game."

Jackson said last week he was determined to monitor Bryant's playing time more closely this season. The reigning NBA MVP, who turned 30 on Aug. 23 and is entering his 13th season, averaged 28.3 points in 38.9 minutes in leading the Lakers to the NBA Finals last season.

"Phil does a good job of making sure we stay in good condition, but that he doesn't overexert us too much because of the long summer we had," Bryant said. "I feel great. I could run all day. I'm in shape, so I'm ready to go."

The Lakers play their first preseason game Oct. 7.

Rockets planning to adjust Yao's activities to keep him fresh

HOUSTON -- Yao Ming's birthday wish: getting through an NBA season without getting hurt.

The 7-foot-6 center -- who turned 28 on Sept. 12 -- has missed more than 80 games across the last three seasons with four separate injuries. In 2005-06, he contracted an infection in his left big toe that required surgery, then broke his left foot later. In 2006-07, he broke his right leg. Last February, he broke his left foot in a different place, had surgery and sat out the playoffs.

Yao acknowledges that he has to change something, whether it's his workout routine or the number of minutes he logs in games.

With Bynum back, expectations are high for the Lakers

Andrew Bynum has gotten big, cinematically big, to the point that when he approaches, you can't help but do a slow pan from his toes to his head, like a dramatic movie shot. His chest and shoulders have filled out. He's a skinny teenager no more.

The question is: Is Bynum big enough to handle the extraordinary burden placed on him, to be the man to bring the Lakers from 2008 runners-up to 2009 champions?

Bynum doesn't sag under the expectations. He shrugs.

"I don't think it's putting a lot on my shoulders at all," Bynum said. "We have a team, a caliber of team, that's worthy and good enough to get back."

Stoudemire has torn iris, may don goggles upon return

Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire missed practice Thursday with a partially torn iris after being poked in the eye during practice Wednesday.

Suns center Boris Diaw inadvertently poked Stoudemire in the right eye during practice, and Stoudemire awoke Thursday with swelling and blurred vision.

An examination showed there was no damage to the retina or the cornea, according to the East Valley Tribune.

"He actually had some damage to his iris, which is not serious, fortunately," team GM Steve Kerr said, according to the Arizona Republic.

Stoudemire, who will miss the team's public scrimmage on Friday, will likely wear goggles when he returns to the court -- possibly Sunday -- and might wear them for the rest of his career.

"It's going to be important that he gets back and try to get up his conditioning," Suns coach Terry Porter said, according to the Republic. "As soon as you take a couple steps forward, you've got to take a couple steps backward for him, unfortunately."

Radio Hosts accuse Magic of Faking AIDS

Quote
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—Magic Johnson criticized a pair of talk show hosts Friday for accusing him of faking AIDS but said he didn’t want them to be fired.

Chris Baker and Langdon Perry of KTLK in Minneapolis made the remarks during Baker’s conservative radio show on Wednesday. After Johnson condemned the statements, the station said it regretted “some offhand remarks” by the pair.

“We can’t have people out here making false statements and putting out bad information, because this battle is too big when it comes to HIV and AIDS,” Johnson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

“I poured my life into it and a lot of other people have poured their life into it, into getting out the right information so people can protect themselves and know what HIV and AIDS is all about.”

Johnson called the remarks “so stupid,” and said he hadn’t heard from the station. He also wants the hosts to keep their jobs.

“I would rather they educate their audience,” he said.

According to a partial transcript and audio clip posted on a media watchdog site, mediamatters.org, the remarks came after a caller asserted that health care isn’t a basic right. Perry responded by asking about treatable diseases that a person can live with for a long time “if you just get some basic drugs.”

Baker responded, “Like Magic Johnson?”

Perry replied, “Like Magic with his faked AIDS. Magic faked AIDS.”

Baker said, “You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?”

Perry replied, “I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.”

“Me too,” Baker said.

Johnson was diagnosed with HIV in 1991 and then retired from the NBA at 32.

KTLK’s statement said it recognized the seriousness of AIDS and the “great work” Johnson has done to call attention to the disease.

“We regret that some offhand remarks by commentators on KTLK did not reflect that,” the statement said. “To better inform our listeners and employees, KTLK will be airing HIV/AIDS awareness public service announcements, and will be reaching out to Mr. Johnson to get his thoughts on education efforts.”

Program director Steve Versnick said the station wouldn’t comment beyond the statement.

Johnson, 49, said his health is “wonderful.” He also noted that he has HIV, not AIDS.

“You have incredible drugs now,” he said. “I’m working out every day.”
