There have been rumors floating around about the title involving the word "brain" and being shortened to "buresuto/breast". :lol: The same rumors also predicted the same release date that Sayu just confirmed, so we'll see.
I wonder if we'll get someone else arranging this time; as much as I absolutely loved Okubo's work on the previous three singles, I think we could afford a little break from that sound.

Amazing coincidence, but I was watching this show (http://www.hello-online.org/index.php?app=xbt&CODE=details&torrent=56144) in which they explained various terms used in business, once of which was breast/brainstorming! I check this thread and find the exact same info, haha.
As for the song, I like it better than Help Me, but it's pretty much exactly the same as the past three singles :nervous
For a song called "brainstorming" you'd expect some new ideas :lol:
In addition, they should have called it "Breast" for more media attention. lol

Don't feel as excited for this one though, as it doesn't have the catchy feel of Help Me. Maybe the main PV will look better.

I had to watch this video 3 times, mainly because the blurry iPhone quality of this video made it hard to figure out who's who the first two times! :bleed eyes: Like seriously, there's no way this is actually 480p.
I guess my feelings toward this song and video so far is best described as simultaneously disappointed and pleasantly surprised. XD The song's general sound and dance indeed borrows a bit too much from the previous three singles (why mess with success?), but there's definitely a sense of evolution going on as well--it's certainly not "exactly the same". Yet another four-on-the-floor monorhythm beat gets used again, but thankfully it's easily overshadowed by a hectic jungle-ish beat getting used for most of the song. The dance seems to recycle and tweak a lot of moves and formations used recently, but at the same time I just love that waving M at the end of each chorus and the "fight" between Riho and Ayumi at 1:40. And yeah, this sounds like another Okubo track, whose current winning formula could easily turn into a losing formula if not careful, but I do like that the line distribution doesn't seem as lopsided as usual here--and with this being Reina's last single I think there's a good chance we actually might get something a bit different for the 54th single due to the vocal landscape changing significantly.
The important thing is that overall this song is pretty good despite its faults; it reminds me mostly of "Wakuteka" (which has to be a good thing) with a little bit of "Naichau Kamo", but I'm definitely also in the same camp of liking this more than "Help Me".
Other notes:
- Despite my gripes with the blurry quality, it also made for a fun guessing game! Looks like the red team consists of Reina, Mizuki, Erina, Ayumi, Haruka, and Sakura, and the purple team consists of Sayumi, Riho, Kanon, Haruna, and Masaki.
- Reina's the only one with an open jacket; I suppose since she's on her way out it's appropriate she gets some extra breathing room. :P
- Kuduu rocking a cap again. It's a cute gimmick, I must say.
- I almost forgot Sakura was in the group, as she finally switched her hair away from that bob/helmet style she's had since winning her audition.
- Did Zukki lose weight? She looks a bit slimmer here.

Wakuteka and Help Me took a little bit to grow on me but this one is like OTT in that I loved it upon first listen. Truthfully, I forgot Sakura was in the group so I had a moment of "whoa, who's singing there?" Not much to say aside from complaints about the video quality from me, I really love the new Momusu.

I like this song.
The song's style isn't a problem with me. I think it might be good to have a signature sound while looking for the new signature voice.

I think they've been putting a lot of emphasis on formation dances which can be cool to watch but also means that there's no mass-craze dance steps to subliminally feed to people. But I think this song is more dance-to-able for me than Help me.
I watch dance versions way more than the official PVs. I didn't complain about Help Me!! with their use of the green screen but I am happy they didn't go that way for this one. I am happily hypnotized by the lights at the back.

Ok my thoughts on the song. I had to watch the video several times before I could get my feelings in order.
Firstly...WHAT is with the lack of impact for the song itself? I mean, after a few more listens it's starting to grow on me and I'm sure I'll eventually come to love it, but the first listen didn't grab me in the same way 123 or even Help Me did. The only reason I kept watching was because the dance was so badass I had to keep going. And then repeat because I need to watch the dance again. And again. And again. I suspect this is a trend. :lol:
The title of this song is Brainstorming....and it feels like Tsunku is definitely still "brainstorming" for a Reina-less Momusu. You can tell that the group itself is still in the process of rearrangement, with Reina getting significantly fewer solo parts and extremely fair line distribution this time round. I was so surprised Maachan, Harunan and Ayumi got solo parts, I had to rewind it again to watch it to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. No one in particular was dominating the song, even though the dance formation obviously favours Riho on several occasions (that dance break with SayaIshi...I want an extended concert version for more win!). I think we might possibly be heading for a more democratic/even line distribution post-Reina if this song is any indication, and that's not a bad thing at all!
I had a deja vu moment with the Wakuteka-like section (you know what I mean), and the outfits are wonderful. I think I giggled a little at the Riho vs Ayumi dance break because Ayumi was wearing Riho's red and Riho was in that blue/purple thing. XD Colors reversed! Also, twintails? Moe. XD
I love everyone's hair here. Duu got a cap again! Might be a trend. I like what they did to Sakura's hair though I had a hard time trying to spot her with that blurry video quality. Harunan has gotten better with the dancing, and it seems like everyone has gotten better at singing. This is a good thing.
But yeah...I can't wrap my head around the fact that...man, there is nothing memorable about the song itself. 123 had the kickass chorus, Wakuteka had a cool bridge and an impact with the chorus also, Help Me is made memorable by Sakura's IN YOUR FACE solo part (seriously, when I try to remember Help Me, the first thing that comes to mind is her solo part). The only thing I take away from Brainstorming is なんだかいい気分♪ and that's neither here nor there. :lol: I might feel differently after I listen to this a few hundred more times, but for now, this is my impression.

All right, first thing I thought about this is that I just finished a course on digital sound design and from this song's feel it looks as if Tsunku graduated from the exact same course :lol:
True it's very similar to the previous singles. It strikes me as more similar to Wakuteka though, because it's less catchy. The chorus keeps that wonderful crescendo that is one of Tsunku's trademarks, though. Some of the transitions are forced but overall I like it very much.
Sakura's voice is amazing as always :wub: and I'm pleasantly surprised with Ayumi's voice. Did they manage to finally teach her some breath control?
Choreography wise, it is OK but not amazing. I loved Ayumi and Sayashi's mini dance battle though.
Clothes and background decoration get a 10/10 mark. Elegant and fitting :)

First, I was totally " :w00t: " during the SayaIshi dance throwdown.
Secondly, I don't know why, but I really liked the parts when they stood in a line in a sort of "M" formation and did a "wave" from one end to another. :thumbsup
Thirdly, sure they may have been short lines, but it was nice to hear Fukuchan getting some front time. :twothumbs
Fourthly, and this is going to sound like it's coming totally out of left field, but when I saw the little "downward fist-pump" move that they do during part of the bridge/chorus (eg. @ ~01:10 or @ ~02:40), I immediately thought of Kojima Yoshio's infamous gag, as seen here http://youtu.be/1utN8BWudf0?t=33s (http://youtu.be/1utN8BWudf0?t=33s).

^Speaking of gags, I kept thinking that some of them were going to do the "Aii~n" move with that M formation wave thing. I bet some would too, in the concerts. XD Riho in particular almost would have to, as people who listen to Riho-Deli would know. :lol: Her fans are making her insert a gag move into one of her performances during the upcoming spring tour, and since the choreography so nicely provided an opening, she better take it or have to improvise something worse. :lol:

Apparently there's been a lot of talk that this might not be the actual A-side to this single, that this video was released early just to test the waters a bit. Tsunku's tweets did say 未発表 (mihappyou) meaning "not yet announced"...I wonder what exactly he has planned...
I kinda do hope this does become the A-side with all the non-lead girls getting a bit more promotion here, but I guess we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

I love the song. I love the dance. I love the whole thing.
BUT
I second the comments on not being able to tell who is who...and IMO it is not just the video quality.....as the OG said in that big special they did last year or so, in the old Momusu, everyone had a very distinctive look so you could tell who is who even from a distance, they dyed their hair, had a certain style (Kago's buns, Tsuji's pigtails, Mari's blonde, Rika's bob, Nacchi's rounded bob, Kaori's superlong hair, Risa's long pigtails and no bangs, etc, etc) Every time they have a new single I say this somewhere, some of them need to dye their hair, or have some kind of only-theirs hairstyle. Haruna did good with the buns, and she likes ribbons, Ayumi dyed her hair a slightly brownish black, Zukki usually rocks the flamboyant side ponytail, Haruka has a hat and her boyish haircut, Eripon looks good in pigtails, Masaki is doing the no-bangs a lot, but Fukumura and Sayu still look like twins from a distance, and they don't really stick to these hairstyles I mentioned anyway...and yes, someone needs to dye their hair, not just a brownish-black but a brown, a red, a blond.....I think the "colors" are just a copout for this. If they want to really have a second coming, and make themselves known, that means making it easy for people to know the members by face/hair/look rather than just the color of their costumes (which as we see doesn't translate over to PVs post 123)

I like the song and I love me some Sakura, but when I was watching it, I honestly had a "...how long is this thing?" moment. But it was only 2 minutes in. I think it may be a bit too repetitive or something.

R&B bores me. :P But I wouldn't mind some baroque influence. Of course that would suppose to bring Tanpopo back... which shouldn't be a bad thing in itself. Masaki would fit beautifully.

Brainstorming is TRENDING on youtube in Japan...AMONG FEMALES. I put the search to ages 13-17, and it's at #1. For all ages, #3. Dayuuuuum. More female interest = always a good thing! Plus among young people. Oh, second column, 13-17 both male and female...at #2. Is that kickass or what? XD

With regards to Brainstorming, which was released at the end of February on Youtube.
This surely will be a song that will pump everyone up at a concert! For the dance, we deliberately selected and brushed up certain moves from previous choreographies so as to connect the present audience to the dynamic synergy of the group!
Yoshiko-sensei is the choreographer for this time. I have wrung a lot of insight from Yoshiko-sensei in the process, working together to put the finishing touches to the dance this time. The theme this time is "Even though it's different from the old Morning Musume, we want to ride the recent high and and leave an impression". This is a pretty difficult theme, but Yoshiko-sensei was able to demonstrate her skills for us this time too!
The title for the song is "Brainstorming", which stands for how the current Japan, in order to move ahead in this changing world, have to amass creative minds from all over and exchange ideas and insights, so as to escape from the disorder we find ourselves in. This title represents my hopes. At first I wondered if just approximating the title as "Buresto" would be enough, but I finally decided on "Brainstorming" in the end.

You know. I love Tsunku. He's sometimes a troll, but he's a fucking awesome one. When he's not trolling, like now, damn, I would turn straight for him. :lol: This reminds me, oddly enough, of Love Machine. Musically and stylistically it's totally different, but thematically I would say they are incredibly similar. Love Machine represented Japan at the beginning of year 2000, when their economy was starting to pick up slowly again, and it represented Tsunku's hopes for how Japan would pick itself up and revitalize itself. No doubt it played a part in connecting with the mood of the nation then, and that is what made Morning Musume the "national idols" of Japan. Tsunku is a genius at lyrics and themes like this. I like how the lyrics for Brainstorming speak on at least 3 levels here for me. On the first, most superficial level, basically we take it at face value and see a song that tells people to buck up and move forward instead of dwelling in dreams. On the second level, targeted at fans and wota like us, this song is about Morning Musume NOW, how they have to build on their current momentum, not rest on their laurels, and it has Tsunku totally thumbing his nose at his critics about Momusu's current upward swing. On the third level, based on his blog entry, is about Tsunku's vision, which links back to the first level of analysis...it's not just about a person specifically, but the whole of Japan. That it's no good dwelling on past successes, that in order to move on we need to "brainstorm" for new ideas in order to lift Japan out of its slump. But also that it's no good to be all depressed about it. It's a song about hope, but cautious hope. That it's not going to be easy, but that we have to try and not give up or lose our nerve. It's Tsunku expressing his nationalistic pride and vision for Japan...and we know Tsunku is totally a nationalist (see: How Do You Like This Japan!). This is why Morning Musume, produced by Tsunku, are the national idols of Japan. ;_; No Tsunku, no Momusu!

On the first, most superficial level, basically we take it at face value and see a song that tells people to buck up and move forward instead of dwelling in ドリームもむす。
I'm amazed at how well things can connect when we put them in words ^_^ The first level you stated can very closely describe the second.
I like how you've put a parallelism between Love Machine and this song. I think this doesn't only reflect similarities between Morning Musume and Japan's economic momentum at the time and the need for new ideas now but also what happened in between these two points in time. The attachment to whatever-worked-at-one-time ways of doing things got the better of the people in charge and created an environment of stagnation and decline. The rise of the South Koreans in entertainment and economy.
I think that Morning Musume are national idols of Japan not only because of Tsunku's nationalism and reflection of the mood of the Japanese but also because of the similarity of the flow (or cycle) of its existence with Japan. The long history, fluctuating membership, the rise and decline in popularity, the formulaic songs and dances, the changing mainstream audience, the constant wotas and the need to constantly adapt to the now shows a kind of microcosm of Japan.

Momusu really is Tsunku's brainchild, and changing as it does, it reflects Japan as a whole. If you look at it that way, Platinum Era/Emo Musume was completely self-directed and inward-looking, which is not unlike what Japan has been doing for the last decade or so. Licking its own wounds, so to speak? Unfortunately, feeling sorry for yourself isn't very productive, methinks. XD
I think it's telling that with a whole new renewal for Momusu, by refreshing it with the addition of the 9th, 10th and 11th generation members, it has given Tsunku himself a boost, that spurt of creative energy that goes with the youthful members. With different members he has to tailor his songwriting to fit their individual quirks as well as expounding on his own image for the group, and the difference is showing in this recent streak of releases. Electro-Musume isn't entirely new, but taken to this level, it kind of is. :lol: The last couple of singles, the girls themselves have been saying how all the quirky little parts of the singles basically stem from Tsunku's 遊び心, which is his "playfulness", so to speak. It's amazing to think that he's a 40-something Japanese man and writes lyrics suited for teenage (and older) girls. It's like he never really grew up (and somehow understands the female heart? how is this possible???).
But yes, Tsunku is awesome and I like how on Twitter, they're like "the average lifespan of a Japanese man is around 70+, that's about 30+ more years for Tsunku-san. Tsunku-san! Please continue producing for Momusu until the day you die! We're waiting for single release #100!" :lol:

I think with the estimated average of 3 singles a year (we have years of 4 singles and 2 singles so yeah) they can make it in 17+/- years. Hell, if we squeeze out all of Tsunku's years we can probably make it it single #150!
The only difference between Morning Musume and Japan is that Morning Musume is full of young people haha.
I think many Japanese people do realize that the future is in young people, their vitality and the new ideas and skills they bring.
I also think MM can be Tsunku's safe megaphone to the rest of Japan. GIRL POWER BITCHIZ!!!!

Someone actually crunched the numbers and say that we average at 3.42 singles a year (I know, lol!), and if Tsunku lives to the normal average lifespan of Japanese (79?) and continues producing up to then, we'll likely hit #136 or so. :lol: Math, what can I say. XD

Back on topic to the 53rd single though, does anyone think they'll be releasing a second A-side in addition to Brainstorming? Tsunku's blog post still refuses to confirm it as the 53rd single, so I'm guessing that there's still additional material in the works. They're really pushing a tough schedule and cramming lots of activity for the girls, so I'm a little concerned about their condition at the moment, but more work is good in a sense?
Also, we barely have any information on the tracklistings even though it's little more than a month to release. They're really gonna be pushing it close I think. Let's hope the single will be well received and they won't run into the same supply issues they had with Help Me!

I was thinking the other day that this song might not be the actual single and Tsunku is just trolling and rolling the last few singles together like summarizing what MM is all about now. Like this will more likely be a concert opener or a medley-connector.
If this song is an A-side I won't mind if there isn't another A-side because they'll probably have like 4/5 different B-sides but then I'll be like why not just take one of those and put it out as an A side GADDAMMIT!
Some people are calling for a Reina-centric A-side. I didn't really complain about all the other Reina-centric singles so I wouldn't mind that either. I really do hope this is a double A-side since the two songs are so different but cool at the same time. I'm still liking Brainstorming more but I like this one too and I've only listened to it once so far so who knows. When the song started I was kinda like ughhh but by the end I was into it lol. I especially appreciated the 2000 PEOPLE ON THE DANCE FLOOR!
As for the outfits I don't really have a problem with the yellow flapper dresses it's more of how they accessorized it I guess. I feel like with dresses like that they would look better with more delicate things like heels instead of boots but obviously those would be harder to dance in. And maybe not use the fingerless gloves they've become so fond of. Argghh it's like my feelings for Onna ga Medatte Naze Ikenai all over again lol (those red boots were horrible but the heels they wore in the video were perfect). This also goes for Duu's cap but I'm all for that since she has found her thing and is sticking with it lol.
Also I love Maachan's hair in this. She looks so mature.

It is now confirmed to be a double a-side, with both Brainstorming and Kimi Sae Ireba Nani mo Irenai being featured on every version. The order of the a-sides and the instrumental you get flip-flops depending on the version

I do not like the yellow dresses, I feel that it's a clash between the type of the song and the dresses. They would work much better with a slower song.

Brainstorming / Kimi Sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai
This is Morning Musume's 53rd single!
This will be the last single Tanaka Reina will be participating in before her graduation, so in order to match up to the occasion I have slated this as a double A-side release! Also, there are many types of b-sides in addition to the different versions, so look forward to that as well!

The loose shot version of this song was first released on Youtube at the end of February. With an intense dance routine and an impactful tune, it's a song with the strongest sense of BEAT (rhythm?) among songs of this type. It will likely the kind of song that stirs up the atmosphere during live performances.
Additionally, we have deliberately picked the most interesting parts of previous performances and brushed them up for this choreography on purpose. The choreographer is Yoshiko-sensei.
Since two A-sides are being released this time, Yoshiko-sensei had initially intended to make only slight modifications to the choreography from one song to the next, but after several preparatory meetings with Yoshiko-sensei to discuss the details, I managed to get her to focus on each song as a complete work on its own instead of simply coming up with one routine and modifying it to fit each song.
For Brainstorming we wanted a more forceful, intense feel as well as formation changes that would remind us of previous works. It was very difficult to be able to work all that in, and the number of production meetings we had for Brainstorming naturally exceeded the ones we had that focused on Kimi Sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai.
The theme for it was to allow the good dancers to show off even more of their dance ability. So naturally Sayashi and Ishida were able to really shine in their element here.
With a title like "Brainstorming", it's a call for us to gather the best minds together to exchange ideas and somehow break free of the quagmire that Japan has found itself stuck in! Or at least, that's what I hope will happen when I came up with the title. Even though I thought of titling it "Buresto" at first, I finally settled on "Brainstorming" instead.
It is not simply only a song carrying positive lyrics, but it also originated from my desire to encompass issues I wanted the members to consider seriously about themselves. More than just working hard every day, we Japanese need to set aside our excessive modesty and humility and actually push ourselves forward with all we have in order to improve our situation. For the lyrics, I also imagined this attempt (to break free and push forward) as a success story in the end, which is why at the end the lyrics end with "I knew something good would happen".

This really is a song about love. But it's really more about the universal quality of love between human beings. Like how the dramatic potential of our ordinary lives actually exceeds what is shown in television dramas, with natural disasters and more mundane troubles being just one part of the ups and downs that make up our lives.
Because there are fearful things in the world, lovers are then able to come together. But one must also hold the image of the coming together of hearts and minds among our family members and friends as well, while listening to this song. Of course, you can also substitute the members of Morning Musume into your imagination of the theme of the song.
As a capitalist country Japan logically should prize "freedom" above all. However, the reality is that we are bound by all kinds of rules, to the point where one has to wonder "what freedom do we have at all?". I think this is probably extremely true during our adolescent years, as applied to things like school and our teachers at the time.
However, after growing up, we often find ourselves thinking "that's just how things are", or "we just have to adapt to the situation", and we end up buying into the self-contradictory hypocrisy of the world around us. If our hearts had remained pure, we should have thought "why is this wrong?" or even "why is this not allowed?". So for this song, I wanted to portray an image of the Morning Musume members with pure hearts, who are sincerely hoping that "as long as you are here with me, I need nothing else" (Kimi Sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai's translated meaning). So, something like "I don't need things like freedom as long as I have you."
However, no matter how absurd things get, the sun continues shining down on us. In a way this is a blessing of sorts upon our lives. It was with this message in mind that I composed this song, to try and convey this thinking to the members themselves. Insofar as this is directed at the members, my intention was for them to understand the true meaning of the song, and in singing it therefore be able to translate their understanding of the message to the rest of the world.
I believe the melody is something you can hear change bit by bit, with the main tune carrying all sort of unusual overtones as it progresses. The vacancy of the melody at the chorus probably invokes an expansive feeling that may seem strange at first, but in my mind I was imagining the vastness of the universe and how it would translate into a song when I was composing.
As for the dance, instead of the usual smooth flow of the choreography where the entire routine is a unified whole, this dance has a segregated feeling of a book being opened and turned page by page, with a sort of staggered progression. The dance itself is widely spaced, and there is a point where the formation changes into a rotating cross-like shape that approximates the vastness of space and the universe. For the ending of the chorus, I imagined it as if they were swans frolicking among the hyacinths at sunrise, to convey an image of innocence and playfulness. This is a dance that needs 11 people to perform, which I hope others will do so as well. The choreographer is Yoshiko-sensei as well.

This song is set during the transition of the first stages (the honeymoon phase?) of love into the middle stages, but basically it still talks about how the passion is still hot in the relationship. The style for this song is still strongly dance-based, and with the choreography being cute, funny and cool at the same time, it will likely heat up the live stages! Do enjoy this song as well!
DO (Kuduu, or Duu) has a very outstanding part in this song, so watch out for it as well!

This is sung by Michishige, Fukumura, Ikuta, Iikubo and Ishida. Apart from the graduating Tanaka, these are the 5 members who are high school age and above (note: Ikuta will be entering high school in April, someone actually tweeted Tsunku to ask why she's part of this song since she's still a middle school student right now).
While this is also a lively dance tune, it is also about the desire to live strongly amidst the loneliness of everyday life, even though one is unable to do so well. It describes the feelings of a person who, while witnessing the success at which other people are handling the demands of the world, feels lonely and isolated. However, the desire is still to live an exciting and positive life, so that's what this song is about!
For Michishige, ever since she has gotten more solo numbers and duets to participate in, her confidence seems to have increased and she has been singing well lately. Also, she has a good sense of rhythm and clear enunciation, so while I was editing her audio track I was able to easily see the wave patterns. This is not something a person who cannot project their voice can do, and with her inherent sense of rhythm plus all the experience she has been getting lately, Michishige truly has improved and is starting to sound great I think.
Fukumura's dancing has gotten really sharp lately. Paired with her singing, this sharpness is further enhanced when she performs. While her looks conveys a princess-like feel, in truth she's actually a very aggressive girl (word he used: seme *cough*), and this will only increase as she grows older I believe! As a girl who has loved Hello! Project for a long time before, and as someone who loves Morning Musume as well now, she would likely become a central part of the group as she develops. Even in this song I can already sense her strength.
Ikuta really is a very interesting girl, and from my point of view she's always full of surprises, and often does things I cannot even imagine could happen, so it's always interesting for me. I have no idea if Ikuta will go forward or slide backward in her future as part of Morning Musume, but of course I believe she will improve. I believe she can take advantage of her own surprising nature and continue on growing. After all she has a very honest and straightforward character, which is wonderful, and it shows in her singing as well.
Iikubo has really improved a lot. The quality of her voice was originally good, but as she learns how to use the microphone properly, her voice has really come out even more strongly. While her dance cannot be said to be extremely good, she is still able to dance in a way that only Iikubo herself could do, which as part of Morning Musume is a very good thing, since it shows off her character in a unique way. I hope that she will continue as her stoic self from now on, without needing anyone to come in to rescue her, and be able to accept anything that comes. I always enjoy the kind of questions poses to me as they are always interesting and never misses their mark.
Ishida has truly become more refined. Well she originally was a very aggressive girl by nature, but it is finally only really showing now. If she continues working on her singing as well as her dancing skills, she will surely become the backbone of Morning Musume's performances. Without slacking and operating at 120% capacity, a year or two from now she will surely be one of the upcoming aces among Japanese artistes in the future. She already has the potential, the rest is just up to her own hard work. She has also come to speak up for herself, and as long as she remains able to speak honestly she will surely be able to define her character that way as well.

This song is about a girl who is right in the middle of her first love. For a girl who is flush in the first year of her love, I expect that she would eagerly anticipate meeting up with her lover after school every day. I wanted to convey the feeling of how their time apart feels like forever, but when they are able to the time passes far too quickly, the story of two young lovers, so I delegated this song to be sung by the younger half of the group.
For Sayashi, her character really is awkward by nature. However, recently she has become more honest about talking about herself, and that is a relief to see. It was worrying to see how she was always pretending to be bright and friendly; and even though she wasn't especially trying to hide her awkwardness, somehow her image is that of someone who is always capable and competent no matter what, and that was worrying as well. Though her skill at dancing is the main part of what supports her confidence in herself, I find that her singing is good now as well. Though I find that the best side of her is when she is being true to herself, that instead of forcing herself to have to think of something interesting to say in interviews and the like, she should show off her true self as she has been starting to do lately. There is nothing to be ashamed of there.
It's a pity that Suzuki has stopped pushing her spontaneous nature as much lately, but her dancing and movements are quicker than the rest now, so I hope she will continue to improve on that as she goes. Even though I've said this before already, the best thing about Suzuki is that even when you compare her to past Hello! Pro members, there is no one better than her at putting her own style to the things she says and does, and how she handles the events and people around her. Everyone gets experienced and improves as they go, but the most surprising thing about Suzuki is how smoothly she was able to speak and comment about things right from the start. I believe that she can easily become an actress in the future, and I hope to see her progress in that direction eventually.
Sato has finally found her place in the group. Originally she gave off a very country bumpkin kind of feel, and that went on for a while before she finally gelled with the rest of the members. But Sato has gotten almost shockingly refined, as if she really can do anything perfectly, but I'm thinking "what's up with that?", because I prefer Sato to remain interesting by being completely incomprehensible in her own way, just like she was being. Even if new members come into the group, I want Sato to remain as she is. Speaking of which, Sato has always had a good sense of rhythm as well as a strong voice, so in 2 or 3 years she should eventually become a central part of Morning Musume songs.
It's brilliant how Kudo has such a rambunctious image. She always comes on strongly and remains positive no matter what, though sometimes I have no idea what she's actually trying to do. But that is part of Kudo's charm. Speaking of which, as her face is already striking to begin with, when she grows up I believe she will surely mature into a beautiful young woman in her own right. Therefore I would like everyone to enjoy what little time there is left for her as the young boy "Kuduu"as there is a time limit for that (puberty!).
As for Oda, she has come to mesh into the group more quickly than 9th and 10th gen have. From an audience's point of view, it's a challenge to see which one of the girls is actually the new member, that's how settled in she is. Well, in a way that's really good. That means I can throw out whatever type of song or dance formation for the group and not worry (about them not being able to do it?). Then there is also the level of her commitment. The question is how much the Oda now has improved from the Oda of the beginning. With how the scheduled work has been coming in ferocious torrents, she is likely to feel like "ah, what a bother", but that level alone isn't enough. Oda needs to always be modest, conscientious and thankful as she progresses, otherwise she will never truly be part of Morning Musume as the rest of the members are. It's not just about working hard!
And lastly, "Rock no Teigi".
This is Tanaka Reina's solo number. While it's easy to make a song for a graduating member to sing for her graduation, the problem is "how are they going to use it after graduating?". But as she is going to be part of a band after graduation, I started contemplating a song that she can sing as part of the band as well.
Still, for Tanaka to have come so far with her "Reina" character is truly something. I cannot help but think "well done". When she was a mere elementary school student, she went to audition for the 5th generation, but we had to disqualify her due to her failing to make the age requirements. But when she came the following year for the 6th generation auditions, I thought "even though only a year has passed, she seems to have gotten plainer, her personality has twisted, and she has even grown bigger...I don't like this", but a year after that, Reina was able to present herself with an even more greatly caricatured version of her good qualities, which led me to think "ah, the more yankii-like she gets, the cuter she becomes!".
With that in mind, both the good parts and bad parts mixed in, she has always been the "Tanaka Reina" that she is now, even from back then. It has been 10 years and 2 months since. She has come very far in putting up a caricature of herself, emphasized it in many ways, without even blurring what's important in the process. In a way she has always been in charge of the freshness of Morning Musume from the start, and this last solo number celebrates that. I wanted this song to build up the image of Tanaka Reina as herself, and this song should be fun live as well.

So the costumes for both A-sides include the common feature of somewhat strange 'back flaps', from what I have seen... at least some of the girls' outfits, not yet sure if all. Hmmmm... I guess after 53 singles, there has to be some originality with the costuming, but it seems to me they had some extra fabric around for these ones that they needed to use up! :lol: I did agree with above posters that the yellow costumes for Kimi sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai are reminiscent of the 1920s, but the back-flaps kinda take that away a bit. And for that song, are they wearing ankle boots or is it like high-heeled Doc Martens with sox? Can't make it out yet in the Dance Shot which has been released.
Anyway, that fact that this group has reached their 53rd single and my sweet Sayu is leader... all is heavenly really! :P My costume concerns are only trivial when I think about it.

As much as I love Momusu and its record breaking nature, I do find it a bit unfair to give them props for 53 singles, because of the changing member line-up. :lol: It's impressive that the more-or-less same concept is still alive after all these years, but it hasn't been the same group of people so comparing them to other groups with a more stable membership is unfair >_< At least it reminds me more of, say, some national children's choir being able to say they've been performing since 1975 even if of course the children change all the time because they grow too old etc. In a way it's more about continuing a tradition than being like other pop groups... It's still impressive because it's pop music, but they're playing in a different league than most other groups :P

I guess Momusu is special to all of us so we want them to look great in every way! :P And of course, some of us want to believe they are on the cusp of a new Golden Age, and who knows but maybe they are... and yeah, Estrea, the fact that they are trending for younger age groups is a hopeful sign!! So, with the new singles, we can continue to give them our support!

I honestly love this song, but the b-side is ok i guess. Even though momusu has 53 singles so far, I find it weird that they are now one of the youngest groups in all of hello project. Too many graduations these past few years.

Three points related to this:
1. In some cases it's nice to have a group which has the same member line-up. For non-idol groups it doesn't have to affect the longevity either. The Alfee have released 62 singles! Actually, if you count SMAP as idols, they have released 49 singles with pretty much the same line-up. Very impressive.
2. In the current idol field, I think Momoiro Clover Z is doing so well because they are a stable unit. Five girls with a very strong bond, who all have their own character and image. Very easily recognizable. I think their static member line-up sets them apart from most other idol groups at the moment. AKB is undergoing massive changes, MM has been changing immensely and even obscure idol units like Afilia Saga are barely recognizable anymore due to members dropping out and new one being added. In contrast, Members NOT graduating can also be a problem to keep a group fresh and appealing. I feel Idoling and former era MM suffered a bit from that.
3. There was some talk about MM ending when Tsunku retires? It's interesting because Aki-P (the AKB48 producer) mentioned he will probably graduate from AKB48 at one point. Hard to imagine since he wrote the lyrics to all songs (except one). On the other hand, he also said it's a 10-year project, so who knows what'll happen. But yeah, since Tsunku's role is similar I wonder if he can give up creative control of the group.

This PV still feels like a glorified dance shot though. :lol: the really random close ups and honestly, they could stay a bit longer on some of the less spotlighted members. I mean, I'm a huge fan of Riho but she really doesn't need that much screen time. :lol:
Also, Sayu is hot. 'nuff said.

The random close ups were really random. I liked the fact that the camera was moving in the dance shots. But I thought they were moving too much.
Lol focus on Riho. It's okay to have her close up shot when she's singing a line but wtf Riho close up during non-singing verse breaks. I love Riho so I don't want the other girls to hate her for being pushed to the front too much.
I think the formation stuff didn't get seen enough thanks to all the moving cameras and the random random close up shots. So I dislike that thing about this video.
I wish they had a separate shot of the Riho-Ayumi dance break to make it look more fierce. I called it a dance battle although it really wasn't much of that. I wish they tried to make it seem more like it.
Sakura should be coached on projecting on camera. With a strong voice like that, you gotta look like you're releasing a shockwave or sonic boom whenever you open your mouth. haha.

The big problem with the close-ups is that they are cut at the most inconvenient places (except for a couple of exceptions). The dance shots are amazing although I would have kept some shots for a while longer like the zooming in when they are dancing in a circle.
Still it's an impressive PV. I would love a full dance version and, OMG the dance battle between Riho and Ayumi looks even better here! :wub:

Well companies can afford to skimp on PV production budget & efforts as the bigger factor whether they succeed in getting sales is the marketing campaign.
Help Me PV isn't nothing to shout either but got the #1 in oricon weekly sales primarily because of its marketing campaign.

^I know, I wasn't criticizing, since I love the dance shot. Just an observation. Plus I actually appreciate the close ups on the dance routine at times, because I like seeing their expressions when they dance.
Besides, one of the selling points of the current line up is their dance formations, even if they're not actually saying anything about it, but the way they push the dance shots out more than a month in advance to build hype before the single release is pretty damn smart marketing. Firstly, the routines are intriguing enough that people do dance covers on Youtube, which generates more hype and more hitbacks and basically more views = more attention. Smart marketing was definitely what got them noticed again ever since One Two Three, and Help Me's #1 position was building on the streak started by the 50th single.
If it counts for anything, I actually liked the Help Me PV because it was so shiny. And I like shiny things. Yup. XD
And oh, the age old gripe about the PV production budget. I will never stop saying that UFP is cheap when it comes to PVs. It's a tired old joke that works, mostly because it's true. I like making fun of the fact that it's low budget, but you don't need to throw millions into a PV (*coughAKBcough*) to make it good. I rather like the concept for I WISH, for example, and even though it was really low budget too, it was an interesting video. I don't hate the dance shot / close up formula -- hell, I used to be a huge fan of BoA, and most of her PVs follow that concept. XD It's usually only the editing that irks me. I seriously think we have fans who do a better job at editing video than the clowns on UFP's team. Sometimes they do a good job, and in Brainstorming they actually did pretty good, but yeah...I would appreciate it if I'm not treated like a fool. :P

It's a bit ironic, though: HD would've made a lot more sense for the sparkle-heavy videos of the previous singles compared to the plain "clean" look of this one. But hopefully this can be the first of a new habit for them.

Reina talks about her preferences for hairstyles for the other members here. The senpais when 6ki joined were very strict about enforcing the hairstyle the new girls are allowed to do apparently.ﾉﾘ*´ｰ´ﾘ ＞ Is there anyone in the group you sometimes get fed up with?
从*･ ｡.･） ＞ Not really, everyone is my kouhais so... No, I don't mean it like that! (lol)

When I don't feel like playing along with their games I just tell them straight but gently "Not now" and conversely when I do, I don't feel pressured/forced at all.

She kinda did before in the beginning because of Sayu (http://www.jplop.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5685&start=1020#p98405) lol but now she has grown stronger and really does seem to like it.
Reina also said that even though Ikuta's like that with the 6ki, she's very different when interacting with other members. She's very calm, reliable and according to what Ishida told her, the one 10ki are scared of the most from 9ki. She's very strict with them.
MC said maybe the reason Sayashi asked this is because she's worried the senpais are tired of putting up with her and treating her carefully, just like how Sato is probably waiting to be asked to play hide and seek or Fukuchan fishing for compliments lol

They talked about the how Sayu's mail exchange with Fukumura, Iikubo and Ishida usually goes. iikubo is the most well-spoken out of the three while Ishida is the clumsiest but Sayu said everyone in their own ways is cute. The MC praises Sayu for that.

Second Half of Tower Records show
The audience asked if the president's have been drinking since he went on the stage so red-faced lol. They played Rock to Teigi's pv first so he can catch up to the talks and give him time to calm down a bit. The MC then asked Reina what she thought about the pv, she answered that it was fun. The staffs were different from the ones she usually worked with, they were very flighty and casual so she responded in kind. She goes on to imitate how they talked, Sayu and everyone else for that matter seems to find it very amusing. They wanted to see the making of, too bad there isn't one. Reina said they was recording the whole time though so Sayu assured them it'll make it to a DVD magazine or something in the future at least
Speaking of DVD Magazines, the pres said he was touched by the ending montage, the one with Be Alive (49 I think). Sayu said she likes that part too she felt like crying watching it. She added that she doesn't really have much screentime in that dvd though, then the pres mentioned the latest Harosute episode with her mc-ing. He said she had too much screentime there it's almost painful watching it. Sayu was shocked and asked him what he meant by that so he explained it's not because she looked bad or anything, on the contrary he thinks that episode was so good he's embarrassed by how much he liked it (I know how you feel pres ). Apparently he became a Sayu fan after seeing how cute and dependable she was after she became leader. He apologizes to her fans that he only realizes this now lol.
He also went to the ZAMA concert in Kanagawa, the one where Reina had to be absent from the stage for a while. He was moved by Sayu's Ookii Hitomi and the fans supporting her by singing along Reina's lines when Sayu fumbles. Both Reina and Sayu never really bothered memorizing other member's part in songs/choreography because they had their own parts to worry about so they were amazed by how everyone could normally memorize every song of the group.
They talked about another SayuRena episode in one of the Hinafes MC's where they barely made it to the stage in time, breathing heavily and chest heaving all the while they did their MCs. They were almost late to it because everyone convinced them they still had time while they were resting and eating snacks backstage. When the notice came from the stage Reina hadn't even put on her boots but even though Sayu was in panic mode rushing to the stage,Reina on the other hand was pretty calm and barely running.

从*･ ｡.･） ＞ It was fun. Up until I was in elementary school when I didn't have that many human friends to talk to I used to catch about 3-4 of them and played with them. I used to really like catching insects, things like grasshoppers, dragonflies and even cicadas. I liked pill bugs the best though because they don't try to escape when I played with them (lol)
They moved on to talk about Suzuki's blog pics. Sayu thinks she's really good at taking pics of herself, Suzuki, and also Sayashi. But both of them doesn't really put up those pics in their blogs often compared to other 910ki. Sometimes Reina caught Sayashi or other members checking out herself doing poses during dance lessons though and proceeds to do some pretty good impressions of her, Ishida and Fukuchan . Instead of saying how a lot of them check out their own body lines or how they looked form the side, she said something along the lines of "measuring the width", Reina's choice of words once again cracks Sayu up and according to Sayu the only ones who rarely does that are Kudou and Sato.
They talked about their own complexes/things that they're self-conscious about. Reina's is that she doesn't like how she appears on TV (on talks shows and such when not performing, she's always confident during lives somehow) and Sayu's is how her gum shows a lot when she smiles/laughs so she usually covers it with her hand.
Talking about lives, the president mentioned how he thinks Sayu's expressions is always amazing during lives and he can't look away. Reina said it looks a bit perverted, how she narrows her eyes and draws you in lol. After showing her impression of Sayu's Lalala Pipipi, Sayu said if Reina's going to keep doing impressions of her she should at make her of own pv version of it, one sexier than even how Sayu does it lol
ノﾉ∮‘ _l‘）(Fukumura)＞ I want to know what does Michishige-san's room look like. I'm afraid if I asked this in person she'll think I'm gross so...

Even if I were to invite Fukuchan over, I don't want her to see my room so we'll just spend the time in the living room. On that note, I'm very curious too about Fukuchan's room too. She probably has a princess's bed with the canopy and curtains (lol), I wonder if she had a train in her backyard too...

Idol group Morning Musume’s 53rd single “Brainstorming/Kimi sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai” (released on April 17) sold 94,000 copies in the first week, topping Oricon’s weekly single chart. As their previous single “Help me!!” (released in January) also grabbed the No.1 spot, this is their 2nd consecutive single to top the chart.
It’s been 11 years and 2 months since Morning Musume last had 2 consecutive singles to top the chart with ”Mr.Moonlight~Ai no Big Band~” (released in October 2001) and “Souda! We’re ALIVE” (released in February 2002) when Iida Kaori was leading the group. Therefore, this will be the first time to accomplish it for the current members, including leader Michishige Sayumi.
This also marked their 53rd single to rank in the TOP10, and with this single, they renewed their own record for “the most number of singles ranked in TOP10.”
“Brainstorming/Kimi sae Ireba Nani mo Iranai” is the last single for Tanaka Reina who will be graduating after the group’s live concert at Nippon Budokan on May 21. She left the comment, “I am really happy to be able to grab the No.1 with the single I’m graduating with! This would not have been possible without everyone’s support. Besides being the first consecutive #1 in a long time, this is also the fifth Momusu single to do a clean sweep of getting daily #1 for its first week, joining the ranks of "Love Machine", "Happy Summer Wedding", "Souda! We're Alive", and "Aruiteru"! Of course, competition was a lot different back then, but hey, still a good milestone.
The girls plan on celebrating with a "thank you" event this week...and of course Tsunku continues to be Tsunku... :lol:

Kudo was 1 years old when The Peace came out.
Watching a portion of The Peace!! with the current line up in 2013 I think shows how timeless that song is. It doesn't feel old to me. It doesn't have that classic-karaoke-worn-out feel that RR21 and Love Machine have gotten.
I can still feel the vibe of that song with none of the original participating members in that single present in the performance. It could be me.
And I think it is only in Morning Musume where you can call a song (collectively) yours even before you were actually born. Kudo hadn't even been born when the first MM single that made it at #1 came out and she can still say "our song" referring to it.
