There are some decent artists in the top. I really don't get the whole thing with EXILE though... It's one ugly dude singing and a bunch of background dancers...

There is something I noticed with popular J-music. Most of the best selling artists/songs are the big names from the major labels, the Johnny's, and the folk/pop artists who have been working their asses off for years.

Very true.  The best selling stuff now doesn't really sell as much as in the past anyway.  The top 400 songs of the year would feature far more singers and be more representative.  There are some gems in Japanese music but the quality has gone down, as it has recently in Korean music.  Thai music has been my favourite over the last 10 years though, for the consistent quality rather than variety.
