Now that the poll has finished, I'm gonna go off-topic..
You know,  I always have a problem with Japanese names, because they are not consistent in first names first or last name first when the names are romanised, having a comma like western style 'last name, first name' or 'first name last name' when its without a comma would make life a lot easier.
It's really not that hard to recognize a "last name" from a "first name".. Guess for some it may take time, but from the get go I found it quite obvious..  Take the name "Smith".. Have you ever heard of anyone having that as a first name? The same goes for Japanese names.. You just won't find anyone with the "last name" of "Aya", nor will you find anyone with the "first name" of "Uchida"..

As for what order names go in, whenever I write here or speak to a non-Japanese person, I use first name first, and last name last.... and I also make my students introduce themselves in that order, but when talking to Japanese people that aren't my students, I ALWAYS use the Japanese order of first name last, and last name first..

I am starting to notice 'first names' or 'last names', it has taken me only 4 years :)

Mainly because:

^ This, because you first need to understand who the person is talking to then you get a clue as to the sequence :)

Its like with the sentence construction in Japanese: you need to listen until the end otherwise you might miss the '-ne' (e.g. they are actually saying the opsite of what you first where hearing)
'Yoda speak' is a good sample of the same in 'English' I think :) Its actually not bad, makes people listen until the end and not interrupt the speaker as a lot 'like' to do in English.
