Fuck yeah! Beat him on the first try after a week break. Now to continue on. 35 days before I'm gone for a month, so I'm trying to beat it in that time.

Hope you're getting on well Asmo!

As someone who didn't like the Chocobo races to begin with in XIII-2, I'm really enjoying them now. I guess it helps if you have a Golden Chocobo that kicks ass like mine does. The higher class of races are giving me trouble though so I'll have to maybe take it out and level it up some more, maybe buy a few items to build up his mood and keep him happy. And the good thing as well is that younot only win coins, but items to use as well. It's pretty good. Unlike the slot machines which I genuinely believe is the worst mini game to grace a FF game. Absolutely no point in playing it cause you can put 50 coins in and only ever get 10 back at a time. Rubbish.

I used to be a huge fan of the Final Fantasies back in the days.  Final Fantasy VII and III/VI imo are the greatest games ever.

However, I think once it hit PS2, the series went downhill.   Final Fantasy X was a great game, but it gave me no freedom.    Final Fantasy XII sucked, and I heard from others that XIII was bad as well so I didn't even try it.

Interestingly, Square Enix revealed a tech demo for their new game engine they are working on. This is a tech demo so the footage below isn't indicative of the plot or setting for a future Final Fantasy game, but this is what in game graphics could look like for a FF game in the next generation of consoles.

The tech demo looks amazing and very detailed.  Just look at the old mans beard at the beginning. :shocked  This is definitely something to look forward to but aside from Agni's Philosophy, I'm rather disappointed that there was no news regarding FF Versus XIII at E3.  The game was announced nearly 6 years ago and they're still not done?!  C'mon already.

TAKE ALL MY MONEY

I've been playing the demo for this since Nintendo announced it!! ahhhh it's so good!
I suck at these types of games, but I love it and always smile when playing :DDD

It's not the type of game where you'll tear your 3DS' screen apart trying to do the
moves either, which I like, it's all simple small movements that can you will have to do
rapidly in some cases, haha.
Even on easy, for people who suck like me, it's fun to play and not overly simple, and
it'll still take a few tries to get the best ranking.

The demo contains one field mode level (FFXIII) and one battle mode
(FFVIII: Man With The Machine Gun) field mode is pretty easy, but battle mode
is a lot more challenging.

And it's coming out soon!! ahhh!!!

There's also a Kingdom Hearts Demo out now too, but I've been having too much fun with this to play it :(

Good to hear, I kind of rolled my eyes at the announcement of Theatrhythm, but if it plays well and there's enough content there then how can I complain?

They're completely redoing FFXIV over after the uh...'lackluster' release. Supposedly the number of updates they've put into it since then has actually made it enjoyable to play now but it sounds like there will be enough updates coming in Version 2.0 to make it sound like a whole new game. Graphics, game mechanics, environments, they're all being given a rework over to address the issues lots of people had at launch and it actually sounds rather cool. Say what you will about a FF MMO, but these screenshots show at the very least, it's graphically very impressive.

Oh FFXIV always looked that good, it just seems like they've added more of it in the enviroments, more cut scenes, etc.
The character models were always that detailed, and the game had excellent cut scenes, the enemy models were great too.

The main problems were the enviroments were pretty sparce, like when you headed to another rest camp it was identical to the last one, etc so they've probably fleshed them out a lot more The enemies were also nicely done, but too small in a lot of cases, seems like that has been fixed/changed. Also more cutscenes wouldn't be bad at all, and it seems like they've done that.
In the original version you would get this amazing cut scene at the start then that's all you would get for the rest of the game, lol.

FFXIV was a great looking game, but it really felt unfinished, so I'm glad they took the time to fix it, mostly because they want to release it on PS3 (finally) and actually make some money off of this dead horse that almost brought the entire company down with it

YEAHHHHHH omg, I want it all XD

I love Giant Bomb, they're my favourite gaming site but they just gave Theatrhythm a terrible pass IMO. Brad doesn't pick Cloud in his party cause "Fuck that guy"? But then he goes onto pick Lightning who is Cloud with a vagina?

Also just some really bizarre statements Jeff and Brad made. The series has gone downhill since VII? It was, as discussed here earlier, a landmark game, which people bought into without having even played anything in the genre before. Something which a bunch of developers started designing their games in the same way. It's not Square's fault for destroying creativity and variety in the genre, but on others who wanted to copy. Same thing with COD4. It is an outstanding shooter that got copied over and over again for being so much more popular than anything else on the market at the time. That the market today is saturated with shooters with the same structure isn't Infinity Wards fault.

And in their efforts to stick it to the man, they completely ignored music from later titles, with fantastic soundtracks. In fact they gave all 30 mins to FFIV just because it's the only one Jeff likes. They passed up some awesome song choices to show off.

Ah well, rant over.

Well you could sense it was coming, but it seems like after all this time, Versus XIII has been cancelled. :( I can only imagine they'll move the assets onto XV, but it says that Versus XIII, as originally intended, has been cancelled. :(

I'd understand if the staff would be depressed if the game is cancelled. 6 years and little progress shown to public.
Maybe SE were just shooting too high back then, planning a whole series of games at the same time.

Versus XIII sounded like an ambitious project to begin with. A proper JRPG with world map, airship, in real time combat and everything all in shiny HD graphics? Would have needed an awful amount of time and money to realise, and I think Versus XIII is proof of that.

I think that all of the hype and excitement around Versus XIII made it sound like too much to ask for. The airship mechanic wouldn’t translate well to open world with real time battles, it was fine on the previous FFs when it was effectively an avatar navigating a map with random battles. You would have to make the open world big enough to require airship travel, this would then impact on the “on foot” gameplay as distances between locations become utterly massive (unless we suddenly decide to squish the game into a more regionalised play area like GTA, Elder Scrolls – thereby negating the usual FF experience of exploring a world and probably give other FF fans a new thing to bitch about).

You COULD restrict all inter town travel to the avatar/map style but then you lose your true open world and would have to resort to turn based battling. Also the mechanic was actually toyed with for Versus XIII but canned. There is probably a reason for this.

Essentially you want a big fat mishmash of ideas, that may not technically work together and may not actually be a good game in itself. Its better to wish for something more focused; like SE to do a retro spin off series where it is 3D sprites walking around a 2D set of renders, with an avatar map and all your desires. Effectively the PSone era FF’s as the structural backbone with no aspirations to translate this into 3D.

You do have to feel sorry for the people working on it. Suppose it didn't help that SE are so reliant on Nomura's creative input that they had him doing all these other projects to keep the company afloat and not have his full time dedicated to Vesus XIII like he probably should've been. You get the sense that XIII was a misstep, XIII-2 seems to be proof of that with all the concessions it made. You can only sense that harsh lessons were learnt and hope that XV (which is likely to be in development now for next gen consoles using the new game engine) will benefit from it.

The news also came with the announcement that more games around the XIII universe are going to be made. I can see where they're coming from, it's sold a ton for the company but hmmmmmmmm...no thanks. After XII, XIII's story and setting seemed really cliched. Best to just start afresh with XV, whatever it may be.

So the rumor was a rumor~  :nervous Versus XIIII is still in production (confirmed by Yoichi Wada).

Still, no idea when it'll be out. They'll probably be able to put it into the Vita by then. :nervous
