Blame the random character selector, not me!

They've announced a new FF game. Except it's kinda not what you would expect. First off it's called Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy. Seriously. And it's a rhythm game. Seriously.

Quote
Evidently, Theatrhythm will feature characters from all 13 main entries in the Final Fantasy series. Before you scream something at your monitor about how this is butchering the Final Fantasy canon, take a deep, calming breath, as Squeenix has you covered. Each cast will have its own set of three stages, which you can tackle via a party of four characters of your choosing. Those different stage sets will each have their own differing gameplay mechanics as well, though exactly how they're different has not yet been explained.

The exact nature of the rhythm-based gameplay is still a bit of a mystery, though Square Enix has noted that a number of major songs from the numbered entries in the franchise will be included in the game, such as:

"Clash on the Big Bridge" (Final Fantasy V)
"One Winged Angel" (Final Fantasy VII)
    "At Zanarkand" (Final Fantasy X)
"The Sunleth Waterscape" (Final Fantasy XIII).
    The Main Final Fantasy Theme

Lastly, we have the game's storyline, which, as translated by Andriasang, is absurd.

Apparently, the space between the gods Chaos and Cosmos is known as "Rhythm." "Rhythm" gives birth to the crystal which controls music, and fills the world with sound. However, the forces of chaos have disrupted the peace, and the crystal has begin to lose its shine. To restore the crystal's shine, the music wave "Rizpo" must be increased. And so, the warriors, guided by the crystal, begin their journey of music.

You're probably wondering when FF Versus XIII is coming right? Well, get ready to wait a bit longer. It's not even in production yet

Quote
Square Enix's long-awaited Final Fantasy Versus XIII still hasn't entered full production, more than five years after it was first announced.

Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura told Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (translated by Andriasang) that development on the PS3 game was still limited to a "core" section of workers, though that group was now prepping the project for full production.

Due to "trying out a lot of new challenges, the development staff is still focused on the core members," Nomura explained.

FFXIII-2 is due for a NA release in Jan 2012.

Also, FFXIII Agito has finished development, and here's a few new videos of the gameplay released at the same time as the announcement:

IGN had a top twenty-five characters list for this franchise some time ago, and it never sat well with me.  My list of the best (which is distinct from the list of my favorites) looks much different.

025 · Barret Wallace
024 · Larsa Ferrinas Solidor
023 · Meliadoul Tengille
022 · Faris Scherwiz
021 · Rydia of Mist
020 · Vayne Carudas Solidor
019 · Auron
018 · Cyan Garamonde
017 · Edea Kramer
016 · Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca
015 · Locke Cole
014 · Squall Leonhart
013 · Celes Chere
012 · Basch fon Ronsenburg
011 · Ramza Beoulve
010 · Shadow
009 · Laguna Loire
008 · Cecil Harvey
007 · Terra Branford
006 · Cid Highwind
005 · Kain Highwind
004 · Kefka Palazzo
003 · Cloud Strife
002 · Sephiroth
001 · Delita Hyral

List is current as of XIII and includes only numbered, single-player entries.  If Tactics must be excluded, the bottom three spots go to Setzer Gabbiani (23), Vivi Oruntia (24), and Seifer Almasy (25).

What do you guys think?

Funny Famitsu interview:
Square Enix Producers Discuss Final Fantasy 20 and Dragon Quest 20

My favourite must be Takashi Tokita's (Producer of Final Fantasy Legends) reply:
What would you do if you were Square Enix's CEO?
Said he'd offer the Square Enix Cloud service (which has nothing to do with the character with the pointy hair), a platform that would allow all content to be enjoyed on all platforms.
He would also make a Square Enix Land which would offer both digital and analogue entertainment, including the SQE48 idol group.

Taking on MS and iDOLM@STER. We got an ambitious one here! :)

Some pretty exciting news here. There were rumours of a playable demo of FF:Type-0 (formerly known as Agito XIII) coming to the PSN store sometime in Sept. Well the rumours are indeed true. Excepts it's not out in Sept.

It's out Aug 11th. That's next week! Bear in mind it is the Japanese demo, however it's both downloadable from the Playstation Store AND the official website - which means there's no need to set up a Japanese Playstation Store account!

Here's what to expect from this seemingly meaty demo!

Quote

  • Operation Empire Escape (difficulty level: normal) – the first mission you can choose, a battle with Byakko troops.
  • Giudecca Battle (difficulty level: hard) – reach the destination and take out the Soryu army. It’s recommended to use Shiva here.
  • Operation Rush the Big Bridge (difficulty level: very hard) – reach the destination and take out Empire units. You’ll find several pieces of magic armor here. Again, summons are recommended.
  • Operation Breakthrough the Heart of the Enemy (difficulty level: impossible) – a clash with the Empire army in a forest. Players are advised to level up their characters and enhance their equipment before taking on this stage.

Famitsu says players will be able to use the following characters and commands in the demo. (T – triangle, C – circle, S – square, X – cross)

Machina

T: Bolt Rapier

C: Spin Drive

S: Thunder SHG (shotgun)

X: Cure

Rem

T: Dagger

C: Fire RF (rifle)

S: Thunder SHG (shotgun)

X: Cure

Ace

T: Card

C: Deck Open

S: Blizzard BOM (bomb)

X: Cure

Queen
T: Long Sword

C: Cross Judge

S: Fira MIS2 (missile)

X: Cure

Nine

T: Spear

C: Jump

S: Fire RF (rifle)

X: Defend

Sice

T: Scythe

C: Dark Nebula

S: Thunder MIS (missile)

X: Cure

King

T: Handgun

C: Powered Bullet

S: Blizzard ROK (rocket launcher)

X: Defend

Despite the character having no relevance to me (I have never played FFIV), Kain is one of the more fun characters to play as in Duodecim. Great in the air, has some of the coolest attacks and I think his EX Burst attack is one of the coolest in the game. Just love that feeling when Gungnir connects. And this is perhaps the most epic Gungnir throw I've ever done. Prische went travelling for a long time! Kain's got a decent throwing arm! XD

The Japanese demo of Type 0 was released yesterday, and it's up for you to enjoy too! What you need to do is download the zip file in the link below, extract it and in the folder structure, look for a folder called NPJH90209. Copy this folder to the PSP\GAME folder on your PSP and it should be there when you look under the 'Games' section on your PSP

Requires firmware 6.39 and 350MB to play.

JPN Type-0 demo/Link

Played a bit of it, and didn't understand a single thing that was going on. There's a lot of Japanese text in this game! :nervous But still, I had fun messing around, the missions look cool. I'm left hoping it will get translated for a release over here. It looks super gorgeous too, the cutscenes look really good!
