Serbia wins Eurovision Song Contest
« on: May 13, 2007, 02:42:04 PM »
Low-key balladeer Marija Serifovic has emerged as this year's victor at the world's biggest music jamboree, the Eurovision Song Contest.

It was all very dodgy as far as the voting was concerned. If your country wasn't in Eastern Europe then you didn't stand a chance. They were all voting for each other as usual but it was even worse this year.

As far as the songs went, there were some great comedy value songs. The Ukranian entry had some random German lyrics in it (which apparently the Germans were offended by) and they'd used all the tin foil they could find! It should have won.

The UK did as badly as we deserved.

Key changes and common chord progressions won the night :D

Just a short note, there was no mentioning of Germany being offended by the Ukrainian entry ... more like highly amused, since the lyrics didn't make any sense :P
It was just sieben (7), sieben then something in Ukrainian, then eins (1), zwei (2), drei (3) tanzen (dancing) ... no sense at all :D

I loved the Serbian song. It was one of my favorites, so I'm really glad they won.
Also, thumbs up for winning the first time they participated after the seperation from Montenegro.

I also liked the UK, yes, but as you already said, marktobias, non-eastern countries didn't stand a chance. As always.

Btw, your link's somehow messed up, here's the correct link

haha Eurovision. A greater insight into the European geo-political landscape than treaties ever could. Greece votes for Cyprus, Serbia votes for Montenegro...I think the top 10 were all from the Eastern European block weren't they? Both UK and Ireland's entries were awful. I don't think France or Germany got much love either. The funny thing is, those countries puts money into the competition to support it and they get nothing back :D May as well just pull out of the competition like Italy have done, and then we'll see how the competition copes then.

But again, that's no excuse for how awful our entries were. Didn't see all of the competition either, but from what I saw (Serbia, Ukraine, Ireland, France) it was pretty poor all round.

Apocalyptica was the best part of the night for me too! The boy in the bubble thing was WTF, but heavy metal and cellos FTW!!

I didn't like the song that won. >_<
It was like.. schampoo.. nothing special.
UK was really awful. France was fun and would have been better without the cat-guy.
I didn't hear Finlands whole entry.. so I don't know if it was just schampoo or good.
I thought Sweden was really good. I'm probably just in love with Ola Salo and therefore biased. ^_^
I didn't have any favorite this year, exept The Ark.....the entries where nothing special.
Last year was better.

And Apocalyptica is the bestest.. I feel sorry for the ones that didn't get to see it.

Countries that get the contest more seriously have greater chances of winning and deserve the victory more. There is nothing strange in that. As a confirmation, Serbia celebrated the victory like this:
(EDIT: Sorry, I am too dumb for your Youtube command, it didn't work out)
Losers have the right to cry...
Yes, block voting does exist, it has always existed (even before the East was included). But the way most of Western Europe defines the blocks is a complete nonsense. "If you were communist then you are on the East, otherwise you are on the West". So, for example, Greece is on the West! In reality, however, the things are different, and I can count at least four blocks: East, Southeast, North, West. Yes, East and Southeast, both classified in "Eastern block", traditionally don't give many points to each other. Who receives most points from outside its own block wins, so Serbia is a rightful winner. But how Ukraine (which I found totally unfunny, even Romania was funnier) and some other countries deserved to end up in top 10 I really have no clue...

I think georgian Sopho had the best song :(

About countries voting their neighbors... Well it has always been like that, however I think western countries are whining for nothing if they're sending groups like that to the contest. Britain's was like worst ever and France had some nice wackiness in their pink-gay performance, but Ukraine had much more WTF-factor and got those votes.

In finnish media the top-whiner has been Sweden's The Ark. However their song wasn't really good. It was so basic. Just like Finland. Pakarinen's song was rock, but it was crappy.

Britain's was like worst ever...

The scary thing is, that song was voted for by the British public :o I think they thought it was cheesy and camp enough to be a contender and I guess that's really how we view the contest now. And yet even though they don't take it seriously, there's still an outrage over the results.

over here we're talking about splitting up our country (the netherlands) into 12 little countries , so we can stand up against the eastern ones next year! wuahaha, such an outrage ~~

I know our song was awful but it really wouldn't matter what song we put forward. I'm not whining about it as such... it just takes away a little bit from the fun of it all.

Some countries have actually said they're pulling out of next year's contest because of the block voting.

I was researching on Wikipedia and apparently Egypt may qualify for next year's contest! They've joined the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and so qualify somehow..... I'm really not sure what that's all about.

My favourite entries this year were France, Bulgaria and Ukraine. The bald guy for France had me laughing while I was still sober, the Bulgarian entry made lovely use of a Mortal Kombat rip-off (i only don't mind because it's Eurovision) and Ukraine.... well that was the catchiest tune I heard all night.

The difference in attitude is stark between the European countries. Some countries, their finest performers / writers / composers enter, whereas in recent years for the UK, the Eurovision Song Contest is an opportunity for the unemployed.

The most enjoyable moment for me on the night was the French bald guy running around in circles! I sent a message to a mate of mine saying I couldn't believe that they won a contest in France to get nominated, only to be reminded that the UK entry were the same!

 ;D
