While watching this video, it suddenly struck me why all this is happening at all. I guess I knew to some extent why, but it just struck me full force while watching the video.
Melon Kinenbi has basically everything it needs to be popular in the Japanese mainstream except one thing: attention. I'll be damned if it isn't working to at least some extent. I even pre-ordered this one last night! Thing is, is Melon Kinenbi being turned into a novelty act (at least for this release) and is that a bad thing in the long run?
I say yes, MKB is being turned into a novelty act for this release similar to classics like
Happa-dai's "Yatta!". In my mind, this is not a bad thing if it's only for a short time. It got me to buy the damned CD, and with a PV like that, people are going to
at least notice them.
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I see the whole thing as a low-risk high-gain marketing ploy to get MKB's foot in the door for future fans to take notice. At the very worst, people are going to be indifferent, much as they are now.
