I saw this on the news. They used industrial chemicals to soften the cardboard.

The reputation of Chinese product safety is certainly taking a hit lately. It's curious how Japan is much more obsessed about product safety and their food supply, while China is largely oblivious to it.

Caught on video camera.  Consider China, the cook and owner might get firing squad or 20 years in prison.

The fact that people can actually be fooled and don't realize that they're actually eating cardboard is disturbing in itself.

If they found one, I wonder how many other stands are doing this practice <_<

I read about this in the newspaper.  I ate a bunch of street food but never saw dumplings in the area I was in.

Just another indication that we're all doomed.

Because the moment we become dependant on chinese labor (and don't say it isn't going to happen!), they'll be able to stuff cardboard into all of our food!

Though in reality this does happen everywhere. I found it more interesting that Japan had a pretty big segment on their news networks to broadcast the actual undercover report; it seems that Japan has no problems these days making fun of China :D

I sometimes get something called "Little steamed bun" from the Chinese supermarket.  They're small and crunchy and very dry.  They're nice, I like them.  It wouldn't surprise me if they had cardboard in, haha.
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

Cover up. The cook disappeared already. TV reports that nobody can find that cook / owner.

Just because he disappeared doesn't make him guilty. It's possible that with all of the bad rep he got from the story, he was probably harassed to the point he had to leave for his own safety.

From JapanProbe:
Quote
...this ultra-sensational news story was created by a Chinese CCTV reporter who was aiming to create something shocking to get huge ratings.

It's not the first time a news station has pulled a stunt to improve ratings, and it certainly isn't the first time someone has ever been wrongly accused.

Even if its fake doesn't mean they have food problems.

If it was a stunt to attact ratings they did it at the wrong time

To be honest...I'm more inclined to go with this story was FAKED intentionally to get readership/viewing the news agency up AND/OR for the reporter to make some quick cash. I'm also wondering how exactly this would be cost effective if you need to use chemicals to dissolve the bun. I'd bet that the chemicals themselves would probably cost more than making the bun itself. This leads to the other point, cardboard is quite thick. I'm pretty sure you can tell whether there's something wrong with the bun in this case.

As for China's food...though I'm Chinese, it leaves me wondering what exactly is going into our food, but that can be said to all other places too not just China.
