And I'm back! I was gonna go to sleep 2 hours ago, but then I decided to watch the Shouganai performance on Music Fighter, and suddenly I got hit by instant inspiration that just demanded my attention, and so was born this short. :D

Cute, pointless, random fluff. Maybe. XD

Looking At You

"Look, you do it this way. Turn. Glance. Look. Glance back. Nod if you have to."

"Why do I have to do this? It's not switched on..."

An exasperated sigh. "Look, Ai-chan, I don't have to do this, but Gaki-san told Eri who told Sayu who in turn told me, that we have to do something to help you. I'm not sure how I ended up doing the job but I'm here now and I'll be damned before losing that bet to Sayu..."

Ai blinked innocently at Reina. "Bet? What bet?"

Reina coughed awkwardly, quickly changing the subject. "That's not important. We've got to get you to look into the camera properly now."

"But it's not running. Why do I have to?" Reina wanted to strangle the clueless leader. Or even better, that nosy sub-leader who started off this whole chain of problem-passing and eventual bet-making. Maybe strangling the devil she made a deal with would be a better idea...

"Ai-chan, this is important. This is for work." There, she said it. The magic word. If that didn't work, Reina would go kick the living daylights out of her 'reliable source', but not before screaming and breaking a few dishes. Girly frustration thing working itself out.

"Work?" Ai looked doubtful, but she did glance back at the inactive camera propped on its stand, the dark eye of the lens winking back at her. "I suppose..."

"Good." Reina briskly rubbed her hands together, glancing around quickly. There was no one around, which was useful, because Ai tended to run towards the staff for help in escaping uncomfortable situations like having to speak in front of a camera. As for the other girls, well, they would just distract her from the point of the lesson, which was, well, the camera.

And no one, except possibly Sayu, could beat Reina at this whole camera attention thing. It was a matter of pride for the little yankii. Not that the bet had anything to do with it, of course. Triple fudge chocolate sundaes had nothing to do with it. Okay, maybe a little. But we're getting ahead of ourselves here.

After a frustrating 15 minutes with the hapless leader, Reina provided a succinct assessment of the problem at hand.

"Ai-chan, you don't really have to keep staring at me when I'm talking. Hello, camera there, me here." Reina gestured as she spoke. Ai followed the directions Reina's hands were pointing, but there was no doubt about the fact that her attention remained very much on the younger girl.

"As much as I'm flattered by how you keep looking at me, when we're on screen, the camera is more important. See camera. Look at camera. Smile at camera." Reina sounded like she was addressing a little kid. Ai, for her part, just kept attentively listening, and you got it, looking straight at Reina.

"You have no trouble finding the camera when we''re performing. Just, do that thing you do. You know, not just when you're dancing or singing. You can do it when you're sitting still too." As if demonstrating, Reina turned to face the camera and smiled dazzlingly at it. Ai followed her gaze, her own smile lukewarm but sweet nevertheless.

"See, you can do it." Reina turned her attention back to Ai, who was already looking back at Reina. Ai seemed dubious about the whole thing, idly twining one finger around the lengthening strands of her hair. She continued looking directly at Reina, who shifted awkwardly under her gaze.

"Say...why do you keep looking at m--uh, the rest of us when we're talking on screen?" Reina blurted out to cover the moment. Ai blinked softly, pushing her bottom lip out a little as she thought about it, a cute frown crinkling her forehead.

"Well, isn't it normal to look at someone and pay attention when they're talking?" Ai seemed very sincere in her reply. Reina didn't know whether to laugh or hit herself on the head. So that was the problem.

"Ai-chan, that's what we do when we're off camera. When we're on air, you have to divide your attention between who's talking and the camera." Reina waved one hand at the object of the discussion. Ai sighed.

"I know, but..."

Reina raised an eyebrow, waiting. "But...?"

"It's not human." Ai mumbled under her breath. Reina stared at her. Really stared at her.

"Ai-chan, how long have you been in Morning Musume?"

"Um, 9 years?"

"How old are you now?"

"Uh, 22...almost 23..."

"You've spent like, what, almost half your life in front of a camera and you still haven't gotten over the fact that it's not human and so you cannot look at it properly." Reina threw her hands in the air. "I give up."

"Technically, 9 is half of 18..."

"And?"

"I'm not 18." Somewhere during the exchange, Ai had prudently decided to inch away before Reina decided to hit her for that. Fortunately, Reina did not resort to violence. Well, not physical violence anyway.

"I knew that." Reina glared. A hint of a smile touched Ai's lips, and she ducked her head slightly to keep it from being too obvious, using her hair as a convenient shield. Long hair did come in handy at times.

"Not the point. Anyway." Reina moved on. "Moral of the story. Look at the camera. That's it. Case closed. Done. Signed. Sealed. Whatever." Ai continued looking passively at her, twisting one strand of her hair upwards to brush at her own lips.

"You can stop looking at me now." Reina muttered, leaning back into the couch they were seated on. Ai also leaned back, but she didn't stop looking.

"Why are you still looking?" Reina growled, sulking as she tugged on her own hair. Ai grinned.

"Because you're still talking."

"..." Reina shot Ai a vicious glare that the latter blissfully ignored, now focused on her growing hair. Unbeknownst to the younger girl though, the older still had one eye locked on the little yankii's face.

Staring at her own highly decorated nails, Reina was jolted out of her self contemplation when Ai, surprisingly, initiated conversation of her own volition.

"Reina." The younger looked up, startled. Ai was staring at her again, making Reina squirm a little. The intensity of the gaze was actually making her uncomfortable in more ways than one.

Ai leaned in, shuffling closer to Reina on the couch, making the younger girl move backwards until she was pressed against the other arm of the couch, with no escape save for abandoning the couch entirely. Should that be necessary, Reina would certainly not hesitate to employ that move.

Their faces were close to each other, enough to make Reina feel distinctly self-conscious about it. She was certain the heat on her cheeks was merely due to shared body heat from the proximity. Not because she was blushing, oh no. That would be clearly absurd, and she will be moving away immediately any time now.

Reina could feel Ai's breathing mix with her own shallow ones, joined in the minute space that still remained between them. Those dark eyes were unreadable to her now, mixed in with a veritable cornucopia of emotions.

Just when Reina thought she was going to faint from the tension, Ai suddenly smiled and leaned back a little, reaching up with one thumb to wipe away the smear of chocolate that had been on Reina's lips.

"That was what I was staring at." Ai explained a little needlessly, leaning back into her own space. Reina remained in that position, staring with a certain amount of disbelief at Ai, or more accurately, at Ai's thumb. She was broken out of it when Ai licked the chocolate off, eyes twinkling with something akin to mischief. Reina's eyes narrowed.

"Ai-chan..." Her tone was decidedly dangerous. Sensing immediate danger to her person, Ai leaped off the couch, grinning like a little kid.

"I think I'll go practice some more now so bye!" She bolted, fast on her feet as always. Reina jumped up in pursuit, indignant.

"You're not getting away with that, Takahashi! GET BACK HERE!"

Assorted staff and crew went about their own business calmly as the girls tore down the hallway. You just got used to the energy level after a while. Part of the job.

After all, it was just another wacky day at the office.

==========================================================

Random, pointless fluff. Hehe. XD

I can't help but notice that Ai just really stares at whoever's talking, and only looks at the camera when the person obviously directs their attention to it. Most of the rest will at least take a moment to glance back at the camera on their own without any further prompting. Lol. So that's how I came up with this. Hurhur. XD

Now I sleep. :D

It's true that one thing I've always noticed about Ai is that when someone is talking she stares at them with this wide eyed look like they are the most important thing in the world. It is super cute but you can also see she's the only Musume that does that.

Love that Reina is trying to show her how to camera-whore.

Before she knew it, her back was to a wall and an arm propped itself up against the wall next to her face, preventing her from running off.

"Ai...chan...?" Reina swallowed nervously, pressing herself even further back into the wall. The rim of the hat sat low on her forehead, lending an ominous shadow to the suddenly suave expression on Ai's face. Or should one say, Mr. Moonlight...?

"You've messed up your hair...let me help..."

Why does even her voice sound different?!

I am back! This came out of a random talk. Friendships are an interesting thing. XD

==============

Storm in a Teacup

Awkward silence.

That was how it felt like, eyes darting around from one object to another, flickering anxiously behind a facade of undisturbed calm. At least I hoped it was undisturbed calm. Where was Sayu and her trusty mirror when you needed one?

My eyes fell automatically on the restless one. Fidgeting in her seat, she managed to look like she was all over the place while remaining seated. Fiddling with her phone, absently nibbling on her bottom lip as she starts toying with the accessories on her phone with one hand, before switching over to tapping on the napkin placed on the table before her.

I correct her automatically, and she stops, eyes hooding a little as she sticks out her tongue at me, but complying with my words. She puts down her phone, evidently bored with whatever she was doing, and glances over at the third companion of our little party.

The serious one. Cellphone is one hand, she had her datebook in front of her and appeared to be jotting something down. She had gotten a mail just a minute ago, and whatever it was, it appeared to be important enough for her to note it down. Then again, she was fairly meticulous about work. So was I, but I think I can be even neater than her when it comes to certain things.

The lack of conversation bothered me. We had been chatting earlier, over various unimportant things and only intermittently about work. That was alright. Small talk was better than this dead silence that hung between the three of us. I was incredibly conscious of its presence, as if it was some living creature, stalking and snarling.

Before I could break that unusual tension, someone beat me to it.

"Ai-chan, look!" Kamei Eri, a flippantly wide grin hanging lopsided on her lips, thrusts the phone she had only just recently put down on the table right in front of one Takahashi Ai, interposing between the leader's gaze and the datebook she was still recently studying.

Ai blinked slowly, setting her pen down and looking at whatever Kame was showing her with a wide-eyed look that was both sincere and baffled at the same time. She frequently had that expression around Eri, I noticed. Then again, Kame was always moving at her own pace, and only the other two Rokkies could keep up with her in any way, and only imperfectly.

Me? I don't even try to keep up with her; I knew I couldn't. She had her own pace, I worked with that. But I had mine too, and while I accommodated enough to be able to work with her, I didn't adjust my entire thinking pattern to fit her flights of fancy. We were different people, I recognized that. I appreciated her strangeness, and it brought some amusement to be around her. It was just easy to goof around, if nothing else. Child-like, yet serious about the things that mattered to her. That was our Eri.

Ai-chan, on the other hand, seemed to have never even contemplated keeping up with Eri. She was content moving at her own pace, doing her own thing, just like I did. But I accommodated to Eri; she didn't. She simply stuck to being herself, floating along in her own little world, allowing the unpredictable force of nature known as Kamei Eri buffet her along in her wake. Yet she seemed somehow undisturbed despite this, as if she derived some peculiar enjoyment out of simply watching and following along, a nameless spectator in some game.

They were chattering now. I blink and jerk myself back into the conversation, nodding and making sounds of agreement despite the fact that I hadn't been paying attention for the past couple of minutes. Ai-chan also seemed to be agreeing with whatever Eri had been saying, replying with a thread of comment that seemed somewhat unrelated to whatever Eri was now talking about.

I stared at them like I was watching a strange tennis match. Were they even talking about the same thing? Trying to piece together whatever they were saying, I came to the conclusion three minutes later that while there was some confluence in topic, they seemed to be talking about entirely different matters while being on the same subject and page at the same time. Was this even a conversation, or just a babble session?

It then occurs to me that I was just sitting and staring, with nothing to contribute. Before I could even open my mouth to chip in though, Ai-chan turns and looks at me, tilting her head to look at me curiously.

"Why so quiet, Gaki-san?"

Eri grins as she chipped in. "That's so unlike you!"

"What, do you mean I talk a lot?" I retort, biting back a little defensively. "You should listen to yourself sometimes, Kame!"

"Listen to yourself too, Gaki-san!" She parrots back, sticking out her tongue again at me. Ai-chan laughs, her face scrunching up as she did. She always laughed the same way. It was familiar and somehow comforting to see it, even though the object of the laughter was most definitely me.

"Hmph." I choose not to dignify it with an answer, and Kame seems to take it as a sign of victory, turning and nudging Ai in the side with her elbow, a grin on her lips. Ai grins back, sharing in the moment. An unsightly emotion nudges at edge of my awareness; I push it away firmly, and it recedes, but never really leaves.

It falls to silence again, even as Eri fades back into her shell of disinterest, fingers playing with the napkin once more, folding it at different angles and unfolding it again. Ai is staring out of the window, her datebook now closed and pen laid on it. She seems to be thinking about something again. I find it difficult to read her. Sometimes she could be thinking about complicated things, yet sometimes her thoughts are of something so simple that I wouldn't have imagined that she would be thinking of them in the first place. That was when she used to tell me what she was thinking, when I asked. Somewhere along the way I stopped asking, and she stopped telling me.

Was I the only one who felt this silence to be unnatural? The tension was palpable, across the table. Across the table. I blink, suddenly noticing something.

I was seated directly opposite Eri, diagonally opposite Ai. This unnatural tension that was eating at me swirled like a miniature storm unseen in that space across the table, but I notice only now, with a start, that none of that storm's fury had touched the air between the two seated next to each other across the table from me.

They were not seated close together. Ai was leaning a little against the wall, her shoulder just barely brushing the flaked paint. Eri, on the other hand, was on the other end of the seat, sprawled a little outward, but not so much that she would roll and fall out should she somehow fall asleep. The actual physical space between them was a fairly sizable gap, but the air was dead calm between them, an easy silence that comfortably buffered them from each other as they spaced out in their own little worlds, but did not separate them so thoroughly that they were unreachable to each other.

In contrast, for all of the fact that the physical distance between me and them was not that much bigger than the space that lay between them, the yawning chasm that divided us was that much more evident, though invisible to the casual observer. It felt like I could never reach out to them, as if my voice could never cut through to them, lost in that invisible storm that raged in the distance between us.

I tear my eyes away from them, from the silence that was suddenly even more choking than ever. For lack of something to focus on, I let my eyes fall into the teacup I cradled between small hands, the rapidly cooling tea losing its ability to warm my suddenly cold hands. Despite that, I held on, as if it was the most fascinating thing on earth.

The tepid tea had captured not only my attention, but also my reflection. Rippling and distorted, an inverted image without color, just a wraith etched in shadow. I move it closer to me, watching the ripples dissolve my image, roiling like a tiny maelstrom in porcelain depths.

Conversations starts up again, nominally including me. I answer as I always do, but my hands remained tightly circled around the precious teacup, the continuous ripples never settling enough to capture me, however distorted, in its depths.

I have seen a storm. And now it won't stop, inside or out.

"You're not interested, are you?"

Ai stops in the middle of a historical digression, glaring at Eri, who only grins impudently in response.

"Nope! It's boring!"

There was no malice in the statement, nor in the stare. The deadlock lasts only a moment, before Ai shrugged, a wry grin on her face. She did not seem surprised.

"Figures."

Eri shrugs in reply, still grinning. They let the matter drop, moving on easily, as if nothing had happened. That never happens with me. Neither of them. I would have scolded Eri had I been in Ai's place, and I would have gotten into an argument with Ai had I ever let the situation go that far with her. It never just...ended...like that. It all seemed so anti-climatic somehow.

Dissonance. The ripples of the storm spread further. I grip it tighter, as if reluctant to let go. As if afraid to let go. How would such a storm break?

I am still afraid to know. That is why I don't ask. That is why I won't ask. I'll just let it pass.

And next time, we're never going out as a trio like this ever again.

=====================================================

Random. It made me think. Group dynamics change along with its members. Add or subtract one, or several, and the dynamic changes yet again. Same people, different mix. A hundred and one results. Fascinating indeed.

So what do you guys think?

Aw, this made me smile :) Gaki seems so cute, analysing it all so much while Ai-chan and Kame just... well... be themselves... I love the part where Gaki is describing how her, i guess you could say, relationship with Kame and how she deals with her, and then goes on to how Ai-chan does. I like that part coz its such a nice look into how things work behind the actual interactions that one sees. Actually, tis what I like about the whole, although it makes me think "Poor Gaki" and I wanna huggle her (more than I already want to), its an interesting way to look at the dynamics of their friendships.
Its like you analysing them by having Gaki analyse them... hmmm... yeah, that's a lot of thinking, crazy overthinkers :P

The end is awesome, it goes from like this intense mood to that last line that just makes me smile again.
It all just feels sweet... somewhat bittersweet, but sweet
