Random question, but I think this is the most active movie thread currently... XD

Can anyone recommend me a Chinese (can be from the continent, HK, Taiwan..) movie for analysis??

I'm taking a Chinese movie course and we have to write a 10-page analysis of a movie (or comparing two movies... The topic is pretty free, as long as it's related to Chinese movies). So I'd need a movie that a.) I could watch more than once without dying of boredom (so no Wong Kar Wai or other artsy movies.. XD) and b.) doesn't have Tony Leung, or I'll just end up drooling after him instead of concentrating on the movie.

So yeah. Ideas? :D

I think "A tale of two sisters" (janghwa Hongreyon (?) ) is Chinese..... Im not too sure though..... It's really interesting and most people have to watch it more than once to get it. Lol, Im doing almost the same thing. 10 different at least one page analysis for HW. But they can't all be the same media, and I don't wanna do any movies cause I can't be bothered writing that much. So far I've done 0 and it's due last friday! Yey me! Also the bio exam the say after tomorow is making my life just that much more exciting! YEY! (Not)
If not, try the World movies channel! :) But I really like this movie, and if you want extra info about it, the Americans are remaking it! Lol, notice how much Su Mi is the spitting image of Emily Browning, and then be amazed at how her English counterpart is scheduled to be played by Emily Browning. I still tell the story of how I thought she looked just like her and then found out she will be played by her in the English version. crunchyroll should most definitelly still have it, thats where I watched it. Also watch kuchisake onna (but I am more than 90% sure that this movie is Japanesse not Chinese, but its still interesting and fun to watch).

The only 3 movies of Chinese origin I've seen are Hero, House Of Flying Daggers and Curse Of The Golden Flower. The first two I'd probably recommend above COTGF.

Although I imagine Shi may be drooling over Takeshi Kaneshiro in HOFD.

Summer Palace is pretty political so it would probably be pretty easy to analyze. As a plus there's a some sex to keep you occupied, on the downside it might be too arty for you.

Crazy Stone is absolutely hilarious, and has a sort-of complicated plot so you might have some good stuff to write about.

You could also pick an old kung-fu film likeThe One-Armed Swordsman.

Election 1 and 2 are good bets as well.

Thanks for the recommendations Tuffty, and especially iacus! :D Really appreciated, considering I've seen so few Chinese movies.

EDIT: I wanted to do Summer Palace, but I can't seem to find a torrent for it, and I can only find US version on sale (with eng subs) and my DVD player doesn't play that region. LOL T__T

EDIT: And the problem with the torrent I have is that some comments said it was "fake" or "password protected" so yeah... XD

Top 10 of April (movies that I have seen before excluded)
01. Apocalypse Now Redux (a true classic)
02. Street Kings
03. Miller's Crossing
04. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (the best parody movie in years)
05. Waiting...
06. Re-Cycle
07. Dark City
08. The Hunting Party
09. A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
10. Rescue Dawn

Highlights of the month: Apocalypse Now & Marisa Tomei's nude scene in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead  :P

The worst movie of the month: The Hottie & The Nottie, a movie so disgusting it almost made me vomit  :bleed eyes:

The word that describes April best is mediocre. I only saw a handful of good movies and pretty much everything else was either average or garbage

my turn.

01. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
02. Byousoku 5 Senchimeetoru (5 Centimeters per Second)
03. The Bank Job
04. Raiders of the Lost Ark
05. Chuen Jik Sat Sau (Fulltime Killer)
06. Akeelah and the Bee
07. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
08. 16 Blocks
09. Hot Fuzz
10. The Forbidden Kingdom

Cuckoo's Nest is pretty much one of the best fucken movies i've ever seen. I gotta agree with Masa about April though, I didn't watch too many flicks that blew me away, most were just alright. i wonder whats up with that...

By my count, I watched two brilliant masterpieces. . .

Funky Forest: The First Contact
Summer Palace

. . .Five good movies. . .

Tattooed Flower Vase
Dead Man's Shoes
Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald
13: Game of Death
Overlord

. . .Nine good but flawed films. . .

Night Watch
Southland Tales
Crazy Lips
Retribution
Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf
Eye in the Sky
Rubber's Lover
Blue Gate Crossing
Goyokin

. . .And two really bad films in April.

Jan Dara
Private

This month is interesting in that I saw both Funky Forest, one of the best films I've ever seen, and Jan Dara, one of the worst films I've ever seen, in the same month.

My best of April is definitely The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I can't understand how the film got totally ignored in Academy Awards. The worst is Failure to Lauch. Well It had Zooey Deschanel in a supporting role... but that's pretty much everything.
