Quote
Ha! Reina had a blog entry removed for being racist.

Her and Eri were pretending to be Korean.

Koreans are making a big issue out of this right now. Sigh. Reina wanted Eri to come up with an interesting theme to pose for a two-shot, so Eri suggested they do the pose they're doing in the photo saying it's what she thinks of Korean people. Reina doesn't really agree with Eri but goes along with it anyway, thinking with the recent Korean boom in Japan this is what Eri saw and thought about Koreans. She then posted another entry with Sayu doing the same poses she did with Eri.

The trouble is, apparently in Japan that particular pose lifting the eyeline upwards is a derogatory gesture towards Koreans, and it's making many Koreans (even those who proclaim to be 'fans', who are really just glad that they found something to bash Japan about) angry. The sad thing is, MM are quite popular among Korean fans who are into J-Pop, especially the GoRokkies, and ignoring how the members have been talking too much about being into Korean stuff lately they're forming the opinion that MM are racist towards Koreans. As of now both Sayu and Reina's blogs have stopped updating while the problematic posts on Reina's blog have been deleted (yeah, after it was already too late), and their manager has also stopped tweeting. I guess they didn't realise how serious the issue was until the day after Reina posted them, and possibly they're discussing how to respond, whether it be Reina (and Sayu?) post an entry apologising for the whole thing or UFA release a statement, or whatever.

The frustrating thing is, while it's not entirely Reina's fault, they're making it out to be trouble caused by her just because it was on her blog. Yes, she has responsibility because it was her blog, but it's not like Reina was alone in it. Besides, that's not the point. Reading through the deleted entry it clearly shows they never meant any offence. They're learning a harsh lesson, I suppose with this latest incident. The thing I don't get is, everyone's blogs are pre-checked by their manager(s) before posting. I don't understand how they failed to pick up the potential problem and controversy that entry could have caused. For me I was more concerned that the gesture is a general derogatory gesture depicting Asians in general, not just Koreans. Sigh. Just waiting for the whole thing to blow over, though they would lose quite a lot of Korean fans over this, no matter how they explain themselves afterwards.

Um, yeah I kind of have a kneejerk negative reaction to that pose from childhood memories(FUCK YOU MILEY. FUCK YOU TO HELL), seeing an asian do it to imitate another asian "type" is really rather  :shocked :?    for me, especially considering that the Japanese have that whole obsession with the double eyelid and all.

In addition I don't understand how Reina who is a Kpop fan wouldn't know that this would be a huge deal. As far as I can tell KameShige aren't Kpop fans but Reina really should know better. Hell, in their three years with Junjun and Linlin shouldn't they have learned some racial sensitivity by now, or was it a "Sammy Davis Jr. and the Rat Pack" sort of deal?

Speaking of which, yes some of it is overreaction but in this case I do think it's rather justified. Just because they didn't mean any harm doesn't make it okay. I have bad memories about that pose, to where today while I'm fine with lots of racial jokes, that particular gesture WILL incite violence from me, regardless of intent. It's like when that dude from B2st did black face. No harm intended, but does that make it any less wrong?

Dammit rokkies. I am disappoint.

I don't know whether to feel disappointed in the girls, assuming they knew what they were doing could be easily taken as racist but did it anyway thinking their fans would understand, or to at least be understanding if they truly were naive to think this wouldn't cause any harm and they didn't know it would be offensive. I'm more disappointed in the management. How on earth did it make it's way through? What the girls did wasn't meant in a derogatory way I'm sure, but it is a lesson learnt. I'm sure they feel terrible.

More than once I've seen in Japanese tv shows where someone is doing a monomane and they use tape on the sides of their eyes to do a similar type of pose.  One time some H!P person was doing a monomane of some old Chinese guy from some tv show.
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

i think there was no malicious intent but it is not purely on the idols themselves as they have to monitor everything that seems to be marginal like other stuff and every single thing out on the internet can be viewed as hurtful and I think it is a lesson in what you shouldn't do and as long as it doesn't happen again it'll be fine, although we can always go back into history....

Obligatory:

And who else remembers this?

In all seriousness, we all have our own different experiences with racial relations, so of course this will seem completely unacceptable for some and and a silly overreaction for others. But in this situation I think it's definitely poor judgment on the part of the girls and their managers to let this slip by. While I do think people of historically conflicting groups should work to put the past behind them and take humor in something like this, I also realize that there's still a long way to go before reaching those goals since the conflicts of the past can still have their residual effects. I personally have associated with multiethnic groups of friends who tend to make jokes at each other in this manner (including a Chinese guy whose schtick revolved around his Chinese-ness), but we were all smart and kept it to ourselves, knowing that other people outside our circle wouldn't take it the same way.

I'll definitely give the Rokkies the benefit of the doubt that this incident will serve as a learning experience for them...I'm sure this won't happen again. :smhid

P.S. The Miley Cyrus incident made me uncomfortable until I noticed what the lone Asian guy in the pic was doing, then I found it hilarious. Again, part of my own experience with ethnic relations/humor (of all the major bullshit I put up with growing up, none of it had to do with my race or skin color--such issues came later as an adult and still weren't that bad--so take that for what you will).

Sometimes I wonder how these two nations can get along. Luckily there is probably far more wise peaple on the both sides than someone can think from reactions to these cases. And I have to agree that this could be avoided and everyone involved is partialy guilty but still... all people tend to do stupid things from time to time.

^in the modern times, it is just exchanging ideas and music, but if you consider before Korea had their boom, they wouldn't be close to each other

I think personally it lies more with the people who need to stop the  questionable stuff rather than the idols, the idols are more or less not accustomed to the outside world and making fun of another culture isn't cool, even though mark my words, I do that here a lot knowing everyone knows everyone, but once they know it will be released, they have to do a quick scan over, and it may not prevent all, but it can prevent some if not most posts

Ahh, so this made it here too.
I think it wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't said that it was an imitation of Korean people. I don't even get how that looks like Korean people. :nervous Japanese people...*sighs* Sometimes, they aren't so...not racist. lol It's kind of sad, and admittedly a bit frustrating at times. Because Japan itself is pretty much homogeneous, they don't seem to have a good tolerance for "outsiders", even other Asians. I remember watching an episode of Utaban that I rented and there were two people acting like "Americans", complete with blond wigs and funny accents. I thought it was funny (not accurate but funny) but my dad yelled at me, saying "You're American, not Japanese! Things like that shouldn't be funny." This is kinda like that.
I don't wanna sound hella rude...but I kinda hope the Rokkies feel sorry for this. They kinda fucked up.

^ I think I remember that Utaban episode, and if I remember correctly, I think those two actors were portraying characters from 90210.
Was it the episode were GAM was the guest? Just wondering. I'm not saying this just to justify their portrayal, lol.
