Could you ever live in Hawaii?
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:47:02 PM »
It's a top tourist destination, but would you enjoy living there?
Assuming that money is not an issue.

Discuss.

My 2 cents:
I would love it. (And have done it) But ONLY in Honolulu.

The Road Trip. Well, you can ALWAYS fly to another island and drive around. If you are in say, Michigan, taking a road trip, where are you gonna go? Ohio? Indiana? The frequency of taking a road trip to say California is probably more likely by flying from Hawaii then from Michigan.

The best about Hawaii is that it is SO gorgeous. You have everything right there. Honolulu is a great little city, you have incredible beaches. You wouldn't need to drive say 6 hours from Phoenix just to see a beach, or 6 hours from Nebraska to see a mountain in Colorado. You have it all and more in Hawaii - even active volcanoes, everything.

Downsides to Hawaii, in my opinion, is outside of OAHU, the other islands ARE quite dull and boring long-term. I could really ONLY live in OAHU. Downside to Oahu is that is where pretty much all the U.S. military personnel is stationed. Sharing a small island with tons of single guys 'out on the make' every night with the bars and clubs, and the tensions of that might be wearing if you are a single guy / girl just looking to have a non-tension night out. (I lived in San Diego for years, so pretty familiar with most U.S. military guys 'out on the make', and it gets a bit tiring).

OTHERWISE...outside of that, Honolulu is pretty cool!

I wouldn't enjoy living in Hawaii I think. I'm not into beaches and sun and stuff, so I think I'd get bored very fast.

I think I'd be able to! To me, Hawaii seems like a really chill place. That's my style. I like everything relaxed, nobody rushing around and whatnot. I've been there countless times and the only thing I can complain about is the time I got this weird thing on my leg.
I'm not too much of a beach/sun person either but I could adapt. My parents wanna retire there so maybe I'll have a place to stay in the future.

Considering I spent 75% of my time indoors during summer/spring either working or just staying out of the sun...Nope, Hawaii wouldn't be for me.

I'm more of a winter person, if I could live somewhere there's lots of snow *not year round*, and awesome places to ski...I would LOVE that. My favorite activites in the entire world are Skiing/Snowboarding/snow shoeing/cross country skiing and I hope to climb mountains in the future.

A place, sun year round, sounds like hell to me someone like me  XD

I'm with Tyler here. While the sun and warm temperatures would be nice, to not have winter would just be weird to me. Plus, no snow during Xmas is just wrong. :)

A few years ago I met some distant cousins (i.e. they were like, 3rd or 4th cousins or something like that) who were living in Hawaii. It was cool for them, but shortly after they had their first son there, it was somewhat rough on him. Poor kid had allergies to fish, nuts, certain fruits, and he had a skin condition that made it so he couldn't be out in the sun for long without ridiculous amounts of protection. Don't know if they're still living there, or if the kid outgrew his allergies (assuming that's even possible). The son would be in high school now, I think.

Though I definitely wouldn't mind living in Hawaii cause I can pretty much do most of what I do now over there too and more, plus I love the beach. But I'm already convinced that coastal California is the best place for me to live :P
And I wouldn't have to worry about all the drawbacks of living in a tropical area.

Could i live there.. Are you fucking kidding me?!  :O Islands full of palm trees and beaches!! I'd fucking do anything to live there. Hook me up with a place to stay and some good internets and i'm quitting my job today.

I mean DAMN! I'd be so tanned and oiled up, and no snow at all, it'd be heaven. Yeah, where do i sign up again?

I grew up there when I was a child, but don't remember it, since my father was in the military.  The other good thing, was that it was the only state in the US where I wouldn't fall into the minority :P
