I had a japanese girlfriend who was about that tall. Here in the US, though she was 26, people thought she was 16. She was always the shortest in her class.

Yes way. She's Asian. And Asians (Oriental Asians to be specific) are generally known as being shorter than your typical North American, with an average height of 5'5"-5'10". Mari just happens to be shorter than normal (even for an Asian). Click Here if you still don't believe. Wikipedia doesn't lie.

I'm not trying to play the ethic card or anything, it's just a fact of life. To see an (Oriental) Asian over 6 feet tall is quite rare. By Asian standards, Yao Ming is a freak of nature.

Meh...that's an old wive's tale...a friend of mine was born 2 months premature (small enough that he was in one of those incubator things and on ventilation, I think)...now he's 6'2"....

More likely, it's a combination of genetics and, to a lesser extent, a lack of calcium. (The whole argument of her not liking milk being why she's so short just doesn't seem completely right to me b/c so many snack foods in Japan are dosed w/ calcium...)
