Ok so 08's done and dusted, it's time to look ahead and say what games are already making you check feverishly for any videos or placing down those pre-orders. Try and list why if you can.
For me:
Chrono Trigger (DS - Feb) - For a game heralded as one of the best JRPG's of all time, and being a self-proclaimed JRPG fan, I know next to nothing about this. Will be an interesting purchase at least, and I've yet to read a single bad review which is always good to know. I'd like to maintain the element of surprise so I can enjoy it without knowing the story and gameplay system too much. On reflection, I'd say most of the games in my Top 10 are those I played without knowing anything about them (Shenmue, FFVII, Shadow Of The Colossus etc)
Castlevania : Order Of Ecclesia (DS - Feb) - My first experience of a Castlevania game was merely a few months ago with Symphony Of The Night and it was brilliant. This is labelled as a close successor to SOTN so I'd be more than happy to give this a shot.
Persona 4 (PS2 - Q2) - I imagine by the time this is released, I'll still be playing Persona 3 : FES. But going by reviews and fan reaction, this is meant to be better than Persona 3 and the defining JRPG of this generation? It's mind boggling...
Resident Evil 5 (XBOX360 - Mar) - RE4 in HD? Perhaps. But who says that's a bad thing? Personally, I'm a bit fed up reading people wanting to be able to move and shoot, or have a cover system. Hell no. RE is meant to be survival horror, where the odds are against you and you have to survive. It's no fun if you're a Rambo style character, with ammo dropped all over the place. If I want to play a Gears Of War-esque game, I'll play Gears Of War thanks, don't presume that every third-person shooter must adopt a cover system, otherwise you'll get the same people complaining that it's a poor Gears clone. Makes the whole process rather redundant. I have a feeling RE5 will be more action-orientated than 4 (which wasn't that scary really) which I don't really want to be true.
/wishes for a hard difficulty with scarce ammo and tougher enemies from the off-set
FFXIII (XBOX360 - ??) - Well here's hoping for a release date in the West this year anyway. Will be very interesting to see how the battle system works out and if it really will be 'Advent Children-esque'. Other than that, it's a main entry in FF. Colour me excited.
