Your Anticipated Games Of 09
« on: January 11, 2009, 01:09:02 AM »
Ok so 08's done and dusted, it's time to look ahead and say what games are already making you check feverishly for any videos or placing down those pre-orders. Try and list why if you can.

For me:
Chrono Trigger (DS - Feb) - For a game heralded as one of the best JRPG's of all time, and being a self-proclaimed JRPG fan, I know next to nothing about this. Will be an interesting purchase at least, and I've yet to read a single bad review which is always good to know. I'd like to maintain the element of surprise so I can enjoy it without knowing the story and gameplay system too much. On reflection, I'd say most of the games in my Top 10 are those I played without knowing anything about them (Shenmue, FFVII, Shadow Of The Colossus etc)

Castlevania : Order Of Ecclesia (DS - Feb) - My first experience of a Castlevania game was merely a few months ago with Symphony Of The Night and it was brilliant. This is labelled as a close successor to SOTN so I'd be more than happy to give this a shot.

Persona 4 (PS2 - Q2) - I imagine by the time this is released, I'll still be playing Persona 3 : FES. But going by reviews and fan reaction, this is meant to be better than Persona 3 and the defining JRPG of this generation? It's mind boggling...

Resident Evil 5 (XBOX360 - Mar) - RE4 in HD? Perhaps. But who says that's a bad thing? Personally, I'm a bit fed up reading people wanting to be able to move and shoot, or have a cover system. Hell no. RE is meant to be survival horror, where the odds are against you and you have to survive. It's no fun if you're a Rambo style character, with ammo dropped all over the place. If I want to play a Gears Of War-esque game, I'll play Gears Of War thanks, don't presume that every third-person shooter must adopt a cover system, otherwise you'll get the same people complaining that it's a poor Gears clone. Makes the whole process rather redundant. I have a feeling RE5 will be more action-orientated than 4 (which wasn't that scary really) which I don't really want to be true.

/wishes for a hard difficulty with scarce ammo and tougher enemies from the off-set

FFXIII (XBOX360 - ??) - Well here's hoping for a release date in the West this year anyway. Will be very interesting to see how the battle system works out and if it really will be 'Advent Children-esque'. Other than that, it's a main entry in FF. Colour me excited.

Didn't Castlevania come out last year? Or do you mean games you just want to play this year?

Castlevania would be one I want to play, too. I've had a lot of fun playing the other 2d games and liked going back tryingto play the games in different ways.

I was excited for RE5, but not so much now since I don't play as much anymore. I still want to play it and I hope the co-op mode is fun. I really liked RE4. The first is my favorite still, but I'm not a hardcore fan, so I don't really care what direction the game goes in as long as it's fun to play. I remember being so annoying hearing my friends talk about how the fourth wasn't really a Resident Evil game.

I don't even care about Street Fighter 4 since I stopped playing fighting games competitvely. I think that kind of ruined fighting games for me. I like playing with strategies and stuff above casual play, but I don't play enough to compete with serious players. I also usually only feel like playing a few matches before not wanting to play anymore.

Is there another Professor Layton coming out this year? If so, add that to my list.

I also want to paly Metal Slug 7. I haven't played any of them in years, but I laughed so hard when I saw a trailer with Bonnie Tyler playing in it. That makes me want to blast the song when I play now.

Not released over here in the UK though. Should probably point out that all the release dates I listed are according to PAL regions, cause I know that Chrono Trigger, Castlevania and Persona 4 are all already out in the States. Shame really, cause Europe still seems to get dicked around when it comes to JRPG release dates.

Yeh that's another argument that gets me about RE5. The fact that it's just RE4 in HD. Or the disappointment that Capcom didn't go and re-invent it further. The game is perfectly fine the way it is, didn't hear that many people complain about how GOW2 was more or less the same game as the first one. No need for a re-invention when the current one works so well.

I think there should be another Prof Layton, but god only knows when Nintendo Europe are going to bring it out.

I'm waiting for this like hell, but not for the 360 'cause my Xbox has just had 3 Red Lights AGAIN. So guess what , I'm buying a PS3 and FFXIII along with it.

And like you, I'm a Resident Evil die hard fan, so I'm waiting for it !

That new game from Sony, Heavy Rain, I don't know much about it, but it seems really interesting.

I don't get REALLY anticipated with games until 1 months before they're out, and the hype builds up.
I'll be buying the big sequels for sure. Got SF4 pre-ordered and it'll take a good few zombies to stop me from getting RE5.
FFXIII is a must.
Looking out for starcraft to get me back to PC gaming, see if that happens.
And one that started getting on my radar is Godfather 2, might give it a spin if it gets some good reviews. Lucky I'll be getting a few weeks off during Feb-Mar. yippee~

But there is one game without a number on the back that I am pretty interested in playing. Ghostbusters. Doesn't matter how the game plays, the first thing I'll try is crossing the lasers.

Darn, I haven't even bought Gears of War 2. :P

Final Fantasy XIII coming out this year stateside? I doubt it. (But if it does, color me excited!)
Starcraft II coming out this year? Not sure about that one.

So the games I'm looking forward to so far are...

Star Ocean IV - Never played the Star Ocean series, but I know about it, and I'm very much so looking forward to the next-gen HD release of this beloved RPG series.

Street Fighter IV - I used to love Ryu and Chun li as a child. I even watched that Street Fighter movie with Van Damme.. and thought it was good. I'm no doubt getting this, once I have enough money to make my own arcade stick. The action in this looks so detailed. When I first saw the artstyle and previews of it in China, I knew this would be a no doubt purchase. Plus Cammy (on consoles editions)? Hell yes.

Resident Evil 5 - I agree with Tuffty. Sick and tired of people wanting it to be a Gears clone. It's not easy to run and shoot in real life guys, why should it be in a semi-realistic survival horror? (Even though it's so much less survival horror now than it is survival action) As of known releases, this is on top for me.

Halo Wars - Not sure if I'm even gonna buy this, but I AM looking forward to seeing how the late Ensemble studios pulls off a console RTS. Here's to hoping.

Alan Wake - I have no idea what this game is, but I saw a small trailer on G4TV and it looks like your main weapon is a flashlight. I was totally into Fatal Frame's camera when all my friends were dissing it before it came out, and that game turned out great. This time around, people are hyped about Alan Wake, so not sure how this will turn out. We shall see.

Halo: ODST - It's Halo. Except you're not Master Chief. Interestingly, that makes me happier.

Sequel Hopes:

Bioshock 2?
Mass Effect 2?

I know I'm missing some games. Maybe I will update this list later.
(I hope XIII Versus gets announced for 360 at GDC or E3 or something. Or at least another PS3 price reduction as predicted)

P.S. Tuffty: SMT4/P4 looks really awesome. It's got one of the best PS2 metacritic scores ever, and it just looks great. I'm still trying to get the money to pick up the 3rd one though.

Since I have so many games piled up that I still have to play, I'm a bit reluctant to get all hyped up and giddy about upcoming games, but there are some I'm looking forward to (even if it will be years til I get around playing them )

- Persona 4 (PS2)
and I haven't even started playing P3

- Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4 (360)
never played a game of the series before but the trailers for both games looked so pretty

- Alan Wake (360)
one of the reasons I bought a 360, if it ever gets released...

- FFXIII <--- absolute must have

- Fragile (Wii)
I have my doubts it will get a European release, but one can hope.

- Cursed Mountain (Wii)
the premise sounds interesting

- Fatal Frame 4 (Wii)
I'm a huge fan of the series so this is a must have!

- Chrono Trigger DS

Still waiting for a life sign of Sadness for Wii. It seems to be still in the making, no official cancelation yet.

edit: almost forgot BAYONETTA!!!
actually I'm not into Hack'n'Slay but this one might lure me to the dark side xD

I'm looking forward to a lot of games this year.

I have fully paid on the following and I can't wait to get them

*Street Fighter IV Collector's Edition for the Xbox 360
I'm a big Street Fighter fan. Actually a big fan of fighters in general they're my fave types of games and Street Fighter is at the top of the list. This one looks awesome and I can't wait

*Resident Evil V Collector's Edition for the Xbox 360
I have all the Resident Evil's and I love the series and this one should prove to be the best of them all. It now offers co op which is pretty sweet and the gameplay is virtually the same as IV so you know it's good.

*Mad World for the Wii
It looks interesting. I'm basically getting this to get more games on the Wii.

*Dead Rising Chop til you Drop for the Wii
I already own the original on the 360 but I love this game and it's pretty cool that they added more into this one as well as Wii controls.

*OneChanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad aka OneChanbara Vortex for the Xbox 360
If you seen the movie or even heard of this game period you'll know why I want it lol.

Games I'm looking forward to but haven't reserved yet

*Legends of Wrestlemania for the Xbox 360
I'm a big wrestling fan and this one should be sweet and since I have the latest Smackdown I can transfer the current roster and mix it with the legends roster making for awesome combinations and matches

*Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on the DS
Got my hands on the Jap version and it's really good I prefer Advance Wars over Fire Emblem but it's an awesome series with awesome gameplay.

*Star Ocean: The Last Hope for the Xbox 360
It's about time they released a new Star Ocean game. The last one was simply awesome and this one should be no different hopefully I put a lot of time into this one as I did "Till The End of Time"

F.E.A.R. 2 - The first game was thrill enough to keep me scared and entertain for the duration of the game play, and as a fan of the game I am looking forward to the squeal to bring for FEAR to me.

Street Fighter 4 - just like everyone else, big fan of Street Fighter series (although I'm not that good at it) and I'll get the CE edition of the game.
The 5 beams: Sexy Beam, Mayuge Beam/Akabiman Beam, Miracle Beam, and Usa-Chan Beam

WWE Legends of Wrestlemania looks cool. I used to love wrestling so much when I was a kid, but less and less as I got older. I just don't like the people in it now. I also like the more arcade-style gameplay than the current SvR games. I just hope the Create-A-Legend is just as in depth as the other games. Ever since Wrestlemania 2000, I've only played real wrestlers to unlock CAW features.

Skate 2 |The demo was released and I'm liking it so far. The only problem is, your skater seems a bit slow, he doesn't move as fast as he did in the prequel.

Godfather 2 | I've been waiting for this game for such a long time.  When I saw that they would make a sequel way back when (game was released 06), I didn't think that we would be seeing any work or progress on it til 2009. That article was up for so long, and I hadn't read any other details about the game. But to see that the game is actually coming out this year lifts my spirits.

Mafia 2 | Two of my friends had the first one, and I liked it. I'm interested in getting the second one myself. It looks good, I'm still deciding.

Sims 3 | Out of all of the games, I think about this one everyday. I've been playing it for years, I find it addictive, and the upcoming game (which is actually a prequel) looks better than ever.

This year is all about sequels

^Thanks for reminding me about Skate 2. Demo's still not out for ps3 :/

Resident Evil 5
Gran Turismo 5

And I'm really hopeful for FFXIII/Versus.

And I'm kinda excited about Killzone 2 and FEAR 2.

Not really much into gaming so that's pretty much it.

Alan Wake - love, love, love the Max Payne games.

God of War 3 - Will be Epic.

Also Mass Effect 2 if somehow makes 2009 and it looks like I'm gonna have to get all the Fallout 3 DLC since they are raising the level cap  Keeping my eye on Prototype, Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Street Fighter 4 , Tekken 6 and some others as well.

There wasn't really a thread for this so I'll just post this here...

Just played the FEAR 2 demo, game is pretty intense and pretty damn creepy. It's like the first one but everything upped a notch. Didn't really like the AI that much and the scenery could have been a bit better, though a huge step from the first. But it wasn't really as visually impressive as most FPS out lately, which have some beautiful visuals. But it was fun and the mech action was pretty nice.

Played it on the ps3 so needed to get used to the controls though, especially the weapon change menu, kept using the d-pad. Would probably be better on a PC.
