How else would they get rid of it? Tons of whales are blow up using TNT, it's not like they can push it back into the ocean and life will carry on as usual, it'll just get washed up again and again.

'blowing it up' is the worst thing you can do

it will only spread the result (like the video shows) accros miles.

Cutting it up and transporting it away/putting it underground is the correct way, but back then they didn't know that yet.
(and they had nobody to seel it to is sounds like)
