Today it was decided that actress Horikita Maki will star in NHK’s next morning drama that will begin airing in the spring of 2012.
Similar to the currently airing morning drama “Ohisama“, starring Inoue Mao, NHK decided to make the offer to a popular actress again instead of going through the standard practice of holding an audition. This announcement has already gained quite a bit of attention, even though the details about the story have yet to be revealed.
Thus far, Horikita has never starred in a NHK drama before, even so she managed to build up a nice track record of starring roles on commercial stations and in movies.
NHK stated, “We decided not to hold any auditions and are currently advancing into the process of casting the additional cast members.”
An insider revealed, “With the success of last year’s ‘Gegege no Nyobo‘ and this year’s ‘Ohisama’, it is most likely that Horikita’s morning drama will be set sometime in the past as well.”

On Tuesday, NHK held a press conference to reveal additional cast members for the 2012 spring-summer morning drama series “Umechan-sensei.” The show was announced this past June with actress Horikita Maki as the lead.

Set in Tokyo in 1945 just after the end of World War II, the story revolves around Shimomura Umeko, the youngest of three children of a university hospital doctor. Despite being overshadowed by her older brother and sister, she resolves to become a local doctor.

Takahashi Katsumi and Minami Kaho will play the parents of the Shimomura family, while Mimura and Koide Keisuke will play her Umeko’s older siblings. Matsuzaka Tori has been cast as Umeko’s childhood friend Nobuo.

The cast also features Baisho Mitsuko as Umeko’s grandmother, Tsurumi Shingo as Umeko’s uncle, and Kataoka Tsurutaro as Nobuo’s father. Rakugo artist Hayashiya Shozo will be in charge of the narration.

“Umechan-sensei” starts on April 2, 2012.

Actress Horikita Maki has been appointed to be the image character for real estate company, ‘Leoplace21‘, and will star in their new commercials.

In the CM, Horikita plays a charming single woman, who lives alone in her nice little flat. She’s about to go out, but first she has to diligently go through her imaginary checklist; “All doors and windows closed, done! – Lights out, done!” She does all that while pointing at the things with her finger. After that, she looks at herself in the mirror and says, “Myself, done!!” In the final scene, she faces her plant at the entranceway and says goodbye.

The director had a clear vision of what he wanted to convey through the CM and told Horikita to think of a list of all the things she would check for every morning. She doesn’t have to say much for the CM, so the director paid even more attention to her expressions. He explained that he wanted to create an image of an enjoyable, peaceful morning and have the character seem as carefree as if she had a day off. Horikita had no trouble putting all his demands into action, and only caused one NG scene throughout the whole day of filming.

Her character in the CM comes across as a very diligent woman, but Horikita admitted that this isn’t really the case for her actual self. She said, “I often forget things, even if I confirm that I have everything.”

However, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t share any of her traits. She explained, “I always check a lot of things before I go out. Rather than trying to act out a role, I just tried to remember how I usually am before going out.”

Horikita’s character in the CM is called the ‘pointing woman’, so reporters wanted to know how she would call herself. She thought about it for a second and answered, “At home, I’m basically just lazing around, so I guess you should call me ‘lazy woman’.” Her remark made everyone laugh.

The new CM of Leoplace21 with Horikita Maki will start airing in November.
