- We've interviewed you many times, but lately your facial features have changed, huh?
Really!?
-It's as if being the center has showed the sense of responsibility in your expression. Do you feel like you've changed?
I've changed. I'm from the 3rd gen, and up until now we've depended on our senpais a lot, but now I've been deeply thinking about the group. The time I spend thinking about the group has increased.
-Thinking about the entire group is difficult?
It's hard, ne.
-You learned about being the center for So Long! when you shot the music video in November, right?
That's right. Yes.
-How did you feel when you were informed that you were center?
I had uneasiness, but I had the feeling that I had to work hard and face forward.
-Your dream has come true when you became AKB's center, right?
It felt good that I've worked so hard until now. It's just like when Takamina said that effort will certainly be rewarded.
- The truth is that you were going to be UZA's center, but you couldn't do the hard dance properly, so instead it was Matsui Jurina-san and Oshima Yuko-san who became the double center, right?
Yes. That's right.
- Did you feel frustrated at that time?
I felt frustrated, but I used it as a spring, and I thought that I really have to work harder. It was a very good experience.
-During last year's elections, Oshima Yuko-san was #1 and Watanabe-san was #2 and after the elections, Oshima-san said that she wants to entrust the next ace position to you. It was impressive. Since then have the feelings of being burdened in AKB increased?
That’s right. When I got #2 in the elections, that feeling especially became stronger.
-Last year when AKB won the Japan Record Awards, you showed lots of tears; it left a great impression.
After Maeda-san graduated, “Manatsu no Sounds good!”, I was entrusted with her position, I felt the pressure that I had to work hard. It was the first time that AKB was in the Record Awards without Maeda-san, so the moment I heard the announcement, I was so happy and relieved of nerves that my tears came out.
-Maeda-san has been the center for so many years
When you stand on the center position of the group, there are huge burdens. From before I thought that there are a lot of hardships, but I didn’t actually know hard it really is. While doing this position, I’ve come to understand how great Maeda-san is.
-What is hard?
For example, up until now I was in 2nd or 3rd row dancing while seeing her back, but now being the center, it’s my back that can be seen, and there’s so much more tension. Moreover, normally, when people look at a large amount of people, don’t they naturally look at the center? That’s why until now it was completely different.
-In So Long! Jurina-san and Shimazaki Haruka-san were next to Watanabe-san, has the mood of the alternation of generations been clearer?
Whether it’s new or fresh, there’s a feeling that from now on we will have to pull the group forward.
-Maeda-san and Oshima Yuko-san were rivals, does Watanabe-san view Jurina-san and Shimazaki-san as rivals?
Rather than rivals, from now on we have to work hard together as comrades. Rather than rivalry, the younger generation have to put forth their power like, everyone let’s work hard together type of feeling
-But, for example, Jurina did her best as center for UZA, did that encourage you?
Yes. It became my energy.
-When you think about the group, from now on what kind of group do you want AKB to be?
As the 2nd chapter, whether it’s starting from scratch, or rebuilding the group, I want AKB to have a new feeling that’s different so far.
-As national idol group, isn’t it hard to rebuild it?
I think it’s hard but our senpais started from nothing and ended up here, so it isn’t impossible for us. I’d like to cooperate and work hard with all the young members
-Maeda-san was called the absolute ace, what kind of existence does Watanabe-san be?
From now on, I’d like to have an existence that entering kouhais would yearn for. I’d like to be a person that can be respected and be seen as an example by kouhais.
-As center, you have to win the Japan Record Awards this year, right?
I don’t know how the end of the year will be….but I’d like to take it.

Q. In AKB48, since when have you been able to show your individuality?

A. Not yet.

A. I love my job.
If I had time for love, I’d want to work.
I don’t really watch love stuff, and the for the future, doing my job properly

Q. What is AKB-like?

A. It’s where you can expose everything about yourself!
