Because You Were There For Me: Matsui Rena

This week is a special double release of the Shukan Asahi interview translations. For this special week, we have SKE48's W Matsui pair!

In this interview, Matsui Rena talks about her friends from high school, how they still thought of her even though she wasn't really friendly with them. Just like during her school days, she has also become more cheerful and not as shy as before.

The Friendship That Was Engraved In A Trivial Photo
Translated by emptystring

My days are very productive - everything about my job is stimulating and definitely worth doing. But occasionally I wonder if I am losing sight of myself? I do feel that way sometimes. On nights like those, I get back on track by looking at one particular photo.

My high school life was the only thing I had outside of SKE during those years. I go to school in the morning, then go to SKE dance lessons in the afternoon, followed by performance. I went to a business high school so the lessons were very specialized/professional, and it was hard to catch up if you missed even just one class. Because of this, I always borrowed notes from people around me and did nothing but copy them. It felt like my day was over in the blink of an eye.

As a result, I didn't have any friends. I am also extremely shy. Because I transferred during elementary school, I was scared to talk to people. I would always think, "Am I talking too much" or "Maybe this person really didn't want to talk to me."

If someone asked me about appearing on TV, I was not able to respond because I felt embarrassed. I felt like I didn't fit in.

The fall of 2nd year in high school is "Field Trip" season. I wanted to go on the trip, but in the end I couldn't go due to work commitments.

The day after everyone left for Okinawa, I was getting extra lessons by myself. This is my chance to catch up with school. Then my hand stopped writing. I was wondering if everyone is having a good time there. If I went, though, maybe no one will let me hang out with them, so maybe staying in school was better after all. In this deserted classroom, the 10-minute break felt like eternity.

I went to school on the 4th day after they returned from Okinawa - I was able to go to school in the morning for the first time in a while. A couple of students gave me bags and said, "Rena, we got souvenirs for you! Everyone pitched in to get you something because you couldn't come. We hope you like these!"

In those bags were famous snacks from Okinawa, like sweet biscuits or yam tarts, and accessories like cellphone straps. I couldn't believe everyone combined their pocket money and bought me something. Does this mean they were thinking about me when they were in Okinawa? Maybe I am in their hearts after all!

Surprised but happy, combined with the loneliness that I have felt in the past, I didn't know how to react and ran to the restroom. I locked myself in a stall, covered my mouth with my sleeve and silently wept. "Thank you, everyone..."

From then on, in addition to copying notes during breaks, I was able to contribute to conversations around me. I wish it had been this way since the very beginning.

It's been one year since I graduated. You almost couldn't find me in the graduation album, but that's ok! Because there is that one photo...

It was just a mundane photo taken during the break. You could see me in a corner of the classroom, being tutored by my friends. My classmates found this picture of me because they desperately wanted me in the graduation album.

The "graduation photo" that was chosen by everyone - every time I look at this photo, it lightens my mood.

^ Being a self-confessed hikikomori when she was younger (and still a just bit now?), it must've been really hard for her to be suddenly thrust in the middle of such a huge group. It's good that she's opening more to people. :thumbsup

And it was really so sweet of her classmates to bring something home for her from the trip, and make sure that she would at least appear in the year book.

15.000 dedicated to Matsui Rena

When SKE48 first came out there were four girls in the spotlight: Rena, Kumi, Tsukina and Jurina. Kumi was the one that gabbed my attention. Jurina and Tsukina were kids and Rena seemed a bit plain. When I watched the S1 DVD I didn't like her vocals either. She sang in tune, but her voice had a squeaky quality to it. Her infamous line in Classmate is the perfect example. They even showed this bit during an AKBingo special and confronted her with it, haha. She improved so much, but more on that later. The point is, my initial ideas about Rena were wrong. Very wrong.

My Rena fandom started in July 2009. She was one of the girls who performed at he Japan Expo in Paris. Some of my pics are on page one of this thread. Initially it was unclear if she was even coming, because there was a baseball event around the same. Luckily, she came to Paris after all. When the girls come out, you try to get a good look at them and you start searching for your favorites. My oshimen at the time was Yuki, but out of Team Paris is was Kasai. It didn't take long for me to take note of Rena. She was in the center for quite a few songs and was basically right in front of me for good amount of the concert. I was blown away by her presence. The energy she put into her moves, the never ending smile and her cute pale skin with black hair combi made it impossible to take my eyes of her.

Later that day during the conference I told my friend to take a lot of pics of her. I already knew then she was the one. Actually, she was really cool during the conference because she was the only one who gave the people in the back a chance to ask questions. The next day there was another performance, followed by a signing event. I didn't get into the event, but I watched from a couple of meters away. Rena sat on the far side of the podium and somehow she took note of me. We waved and she 'treasure hunted' my smile, haha. Like I said in the Kumi post, little moments like these can take your fandom to the next level. I was already into Rena because of the previous day, but that moment sealed the deal.

Months passed and Rena's uprise began. The spicy food specials on Shukan later turned out to be the foundation for her Gekikara character. How epic was Gekikara! I think she gained tons of fans with that acting performance. She proved to be a good actress many times since then and I think her future career lies in this field. I don't worry about Rena's future, because I know people everywhere recognize her talents. Her vocals have improved over the years and she managed to turn her husky voice into a charm point. Kareha no Station getting #1 in SKE48's Request Hour concerts two times is quite amazing. I still love the song to death, but more importantly, I think it shows people want to support Rena in a big way. She has captured the hearts of many. In fact, the Rena song pack I once uploaded is my most downloaded file with 1011 downloads!

A random note to break up the wall of text, I still enjoy looking at Rena's old blog pictures. It's a glimpse in the world of Rena outside the spotlight. There's even a bit of wackiness in there which you wouldn't expect from reliable Rena. You can find a bunch of them in the first 10~15 pages of this thread. I recommend browsing them if you have spare moment. Here are some random ones I like:

In these past months I said some things about Rena which may seem odd. Allow me to explain.
1. I would be OK with it if Rena were to graduate from SKE48. If she stops on the top, she'll be a legend forever. I'd hate for her to slowly fade away or to become involved in some sort of scandal. In addition, I worry about her health. She's been ill a lot lately and she's been having back problems since she auditioned. Furthermore, it would allow her to focus on her acting career. Naturally, I think Rena can still achieve great things while being under the AKB48 umbrella, so hopefully she'll get the chance to do so.

2. I do not want to see Rena in bikini. This is a bit hypocritical, because I'd be lying if I didn't stare at some of her pics for too long, haha. She has an amazing body. I've never seen a waistline like hers, it's amazing. Back to my point, before I spend another paragraph on how pretty she is. I'm afraid appearing in bikini cheapens her image. I feel this happened to Yuki a bit, yet Yuki's situation is different because she uses her body to her advantage. In Rena's case, I feel like people just like her for who she is. They like her for her acting, for her voice, for her smile, for her own little quirks. That's why I feel she doesn't have to do this. I know she's still an idol and that it's part of her job, but that links me back to point 1. I'm really looking forward to seeing her upcoming PB. The preview is exactly what I wanted. It's show a mature Rena. It's intense, artsy and classy. While I'm on it, I always like it when Rena appears in regular clothes. Old school classy outfits suit her so well.

It's hard to explain just how much I value Rena. Somehow she managed to motivate me throughout my studies. Knowing she works hard every day to achieve her dreams make me want to work hard. In fact, the adventure I'm about to embark on is just one step. I need the experience if I want a better shot at landing a job in Japan. It's a bit of a double feeling. I'm at this point in my life where I don't "need" Rena to motivate me anymore and she doesn't "need" my fandom anymore. It's like we're graduating from each other, both ready to move on.

However, I will never forget these past three years. Rena brought me so much happiness and enjoyment. Seeing her perform, watching all the TV shows, the magazine spreads, blog entries, etc. I will always support her. No matter what. She stands miles above my Yuki and Kasai fandom. It's a completely different feeling. In fact, Rena has overtaken my Otsuka Ai fandom, which is quite amazing. I will continue to follow her career with great interest, both during and after SKE48. I hope you will do the same.

At the risk of sounding obsessed, I truly love Rena

This will be my last post for a while, so I'll leave you with this:

- What is it? What is it?  :panic: A new drama? A solo project (LOL!)? A subunit announcement with Akisun (double LOL!!!)? Yeah, the way she inserted Akisun's name in her goodnight is so random (and is therefore suspect, because she has been known to cipher some of her blog posts before, iirc). I guess we'll just have to wait 'til she reveals it.
- Rena's definitely enjoying all the attention, isn't she? She's turning into a pimp!  :pimp:

いろんなイベントがあるとありがたいことにたくさんの方たちが会いに来てくださいます。
I express my gratitude to everyone who came for all the different events.

そうやってたくさんの方が応援してくださるようになると「自分一人が応援しなくたって」と思う方がいると思います。
でも私たちには応援してくださる方がいるから今があるんです。
Even though I feel that many fans will think 「even if I don’t support you, there’s no difference」
but, it’s because of the support you’ve given, thats why we have us today.

必要ない方なんて一人もいないんです。

だからじゅりなが元気になるまで待っていてあげてください。
Today, Jurina who is not feeling well is probably considering the feelings of everyone who have waited for her.
That’s why, until Jurina becomes well again, please continue to wait for her

今日も1日ありがとうございました

Rena caught quite a bit of attention when she came out with quite a lengthy post regarding rude fans' behavior during yesterday's handshake event.

Taken fron gekijouakb.tumblr.com

Rena's Google+ entry last night:
Quote
    握手会でメンバー傷付いている姿をみました。
During the handshake event I saw members who were hurt.

    それを見て私自身が悲しい気持ちになったからこれを書きました。
When I saw it, I, too, became sad and that’s why I wrote this.
    言われたら嫌なこと、辛くなること、悲しくなること、みんなそれぞれあると思います。
When unpleasant things are said, it becomes tough, and you become unhappy.  I think that this happens to everyone.
    多少は聞き流せても限度があったりもします。
Everyone, more or less, will also have a limit when listening to such things.

    全てみんなが同じなわけじゃないけど、自分に置き換えたらわかることってあるんじゃないかなと思うんです。
Although not everyone is the same, I think that if you can put yourself in someone else’s position, you will understand how they feel.

    これは文句でもなんでもなく、そうやってメンバーが傷付いてしまうことが続くなら握手会などの距離の近いイベントはなくなってしまう気がして。
Although these words and sentences may be mean nothing to you, if you say them to members and continue hurting members, I feel like handshake events or other events where you can interact closely with members will not happen.

    それは嫌だし、残念なことだと思うから生意気に感じられる方もいると思うのですが正直に書きました。
No one wants that, and because I think it would be a pity, and although I feel like there will always be mischievous people, I’ve written this honestly.

    やっぱりイベントは楽しい方がいいじゃないですか?
In the end, wouldn’t it be better if events were fun?

    私たちも至らなくて皆さんを悲しい気持ちにしてしまうことがありますが、常に感謝の気持ちをもつようにしています。
Sometimes although we might have sad feelings which aren’t directed at you, usually we hope that our thankful feelings will be communicated.

    1人でもたくさんの笑顔が会場に溢れますようにと思って握手会にに臨んでいます。
“Even alone, we will be able to make many smiles appear,” that’s how we think when we greet people at handshake events.

    帰り道「楽しかった」とみんなが思える楽しいイベントにしたいんです。
We want to have events where everyone thinks “that was fun” on their way home.

    協力していただけますか?
    Will you work with us?

    どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Thank you and please take care of us in the future.

    こんな乱文ですが最後まで読んでくださってありがとうございました。
Thank you for kindly reading this, although its badly written, to the end.

Apparently, this was in response to some fans' rude behavior against Katsuo. They thought it wasn't right for her to be happy on her birthday because 3 people were out sick yesterday (Jurina, Kanakana, Shiitan?).  :smhid

The post was amazing in itself. Rena has managed to convey her point succinctly and eloquently, without sounding antagonistic to the fans at all (which is always a danger with comments/issues like that). When a person who doesn't usually speak out, speak out like that, everyone stops to listen. She may not be as prominent in leading SKE as Jurina is doing, but she does lead her group in different way. Bravo!

From sakaeandfrog.tumblr.com:
Quote
Rena interview from MyoJo magazine, March 2012.

Would you rather date someone much older or much younger than you?

Rena - Much older. Even 10 years older is completely ok.

One thing your boyfriend should never see : you without make-up or your mobile?
R - My phone! In comparison me without make-up is no big deal. I don’t like wearing make-up anyway. But the mails I exchange with my friends are basically all about anime, those are mostly lengthy debates  between otaku, so that would be embarrassing somehow.

Do you prefer someone ugly with money or a good looking guy who is a NEET?

R - Ugly with money. I decided on the one who would work rather than on the one wouldn’t work. I like the fact than an adult works properly. I don’t care about the appearance.

Do you receive confessions from girls? Yes? No?

R - Oh yes! The question to go out or not with a girl put aside, I totally accept those confessions. It’s not “love”, but my chest often tightens when a girl tells me things like 「You’re beautiful」.

If there were a boy you like, would you want to confess or be confessed to?
R - I’ll wait to be confessed to! There is absolutely no way that I could do it. What I would do in order for the other one to confess to me? I… could only think that’s a joke… it’s the same with the members I like. I fix her, our eyes meet again and again and we end up breaking on a laugh together. Even if our eyes meet, it still end up like this.
Lately, the members I’ve grown liking are NMB48’s Jou (Eriko)-chan and AKB48’s  13th generation of research student (Mitsumune)    Kaoru-chan!

Between a guy who is madly into 2 dimension (manga, anime) and a guy who doesn’t know the 1st thing about 2D, which one do you pick?
R - The person who likes 2 dimension. Because I too love the 2D culture. Even if there are other aspects of that person I like, if he/she can’t share my love for 2D I don’t think that’s can do.

To take care or being taken care of? Which one?

R - From being taken care of to being the one taking care of.
I’m not good at approaching people, it’s easier if the other one comes to me. When we’ve become close “I want to do something for you ♥” is how I’d turn out to be.

Friendship or love, which one do you pick?

R - I choose friendship. In the past, I’ve come to like the same character from a dating game simulation than a friend. We had a contest with that friend to find who knew that character better. But, I lost this contest…

Your sense of fashion, more popular among girls or boys?

R - I would say girls. I tend to wear plain colors such as beige and ivory, even though during handshake events female fans I receive praises such as “it’s cute”, but male fans tell me “wear pink” or “wear more dress”…
Today my civilian clothes are made of a caramel and white stripped shirt, black short pants and sheepskin boots.

The most attractive, suit or white coat?
R - Suit. People who wear suits look level-headed. Also, I like looking at figures wearing suits. When I stare at someone in suit who stands firmly, my chest tightens.
Ahhh— so embarrassing!

Which one would you let slip, infidelity or domestic violence?
R - Infidelity. I hate violence. But there could be reasons behind being infidel. A chain of events for example, but I despise that too (laugh).
If it was because of someone else evil influence, I could forgive infidelity once, maybe.

TL : Rena answered to all questions in a gender neutral way, even when the question specified “boy” : )

- She's more embarrassed about being found out as an otaku than bein seen without make-up. Nice to see her priorities in check, LOLOL!
- Erm, what's a NEET?
- It's kinda ironic that she hates violence, given the fact the that what propelled her popularity to the stratosphere was a character who loves violence. Lol, I wonder what her mindset was while filming all those bloody MajiGaku scenes.  :P

NEET: Not in Education, Employment or Training from what wikipedia told me. :nervous So, I assume, someone who is a bum, interesting enough is that it started in UK apparently.

I wonder too since didn't she say that she enjoyed acting as Gekikara or am I just imagining that?...
