All I can say is... poor Masana. She gets labeled as a lolicon, but Rena pretty much gets away with it. Lol! No wonder she likes doing 2-shots with Non and Kinchan (especially Kinchan).

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot all about this. 


Congratulations on making G+ senbatsu~!  She was certainly surprised, but I don't think her fans were. Lol! At least the ones who are following her there, anyway. Looks like she hasn't she been keeping up with how the others are normally like (especially the senbatu members). She's been using Google+ so much, she was practically a shoe in for this.

Q: First, I’d like to ask about the PB’s title…

Rena: Akimoto-sensei decided it for me. On the cover picture I’m inside a goldfish bawl,  so when he saw it it was kinda “It has to be Kingyo(Goldfish)”. Since it’s my first photobook it would’ve been incredibly embarassing if it was called “Matsui Rena”, so I’m happy it’s been given a cute title like Kingyo.


Q: Akimoto-san commented wondering about what this goldfish will change in…

Rena: I think that right now it’s fine staying as a goldfish, but I’d like to become someone who will remain in the public entertainment even from 30, 40 years from now…. It may sound strange, but I’d like to become something like a Coelacanth! (like a living fossil lol)

Q: About the outfit you’re wearing today, it reflects today’s image…

Rena: Yeah, they prepared a red dress for me.

Q: Do you usually wear red clothes?

Rena: I really don’t wear red…I don’t like to stand out , so I don’t wear red much.

Q: Is there a photo you like particularly?

Rena: Yeah. The ones in which I’m inside the pipe! Actually it’s always been one of my dreams to get inside a pipe so I was glad that Akimoto-sensei came up with the idea of putting me into a pipe!
Even if I’m 20 I’m wearing a sailor school uniform in these pics, and I thought that this gap was really interesting.

Q: Why did you wanted to fet inside a pipe?

Rena: Well, pipes appear a lot of time in Doraemon, so I always felt like Nobita-kun would be near a pipe.

Q: Is there a place you’d like to enter?

Rena: Somewhere I’d like to enter? Well, I guess I’ve already entered a lot of places…Ah, I’d like to go out from a manhole! It seems like a lot of fun!!

Q: If you were to grade the PB, how many points would you give it?

Rena: If it’s about points…uhm, I’d like to say 100 but then I wouldn’t have a chance to go higher so….I’d give it 50 points (out of 100)!

Q: Is there something you’d like to challenge yourself to do?

Rena: A challenge? On Mt Fuji’s 5th station they sell Mt Fuji’s melon pan, so I’d like to climb Mt Fuji in order to eat it!

Q: Actually it’s not on the 5th station, but on the top.

Rena: Ah, I’ll do my best!

Q: I wonder if you’re experiencing a wonderful love or something (TN: since the parts of the videos are cut here and there and we can’t hear everything, I think he’s referring to someone else in the first part of the question, because it wouldn’t have so much sense to ask the question after having said that LOL)…What about you?

Rena: Nothing like that. Right now my work is the most enjoyable thing, and it also helps me relieve the stress, so yeah, the times I’m happiest is when I’m working.

Q: The staff told me the PB already sold more than 100.000 copies!!*

Rena: Ehhh?

Q: Hearing such a number, how do you feel?

Rena: I’m still not able to assure my feelings, but I’m really happy that a lot of people took the PB in their hands.

Before everything, they talk about the fact that the photos in the PB show a Rena never seen before, and there’s also the more mature and even sexy side of her.

0:51:  Rena: On the back cover there’s a pretty sexy photo, so there are also these kind of glimpsy side to enjoy.

They keep talking about the PB having photos showing Rena’s serious expressions that even other members probably haven’t seen, and also pics that grant Rena’s dream to get inside a pipe (X°D)

1:33 - Apparently Rena’s a fan of the show called ZIP. And she says she likes a lot Sekine Mari’s English Quiz corner. Then she talks to Sekine-san suggesting her to let herself fall down when she feels tired, because she had to do that for a PB photo in Arakawa and it was a lot of fun.

At 3:04 Rena talks about the highlights of the PB.

Rena: “Every photo shows my expressions exactly as they really are, so I think that’s the real highlight. Also…I like a lot narrow places, so one of the photos I like the most are the ones in which I’m inside a pipe or inside a bowling locker.

Q: Is this a funny photobook? (TN:implying it’s not a serious one )

R: No, it’s  not like that!! It’s a proper photobook!!


Then there’s a question corner. Rena asks this to Sekine-san:

Rena: Question! When I eat Caesar Salad I do it in a particular way. How?

Everyone is confused and don’t know what it can be about.

Girl: She put something on it!

They ask for hints, ‘cause they don’t know…

Girl: A hint can be…It may look like something to do as a penality.

Sekine: Something spicy!

Girl: Right! What exactly?

Sekine: Tabasco?

Girl: Correct!!

Rena: The right answer is: I put half a bottle of Tabasco on it!

They’re all shocked X°D Sasuga Gekikara!

Guy: OMG but that’s stupid!!

Sekine: That’s definitely super spicy!!!

They let a staff member try that salad.

Guy(while Rena is eating): No, this girl is helpless…

Q: How does it taste?

R: It tastes like a common Caesar salad blended with tabasco. It gets creamy and it’s delicious, a lot!

In the studio they wonder whether  she puts tabasco or something even on pizza or onigiris.

Sekine: I would understand just a little, but half a bottle is incredible!!

Girl: Well, she’s a member of AKB’s Gekikara club!

Guy: She’s still young so I guess it’s okay.

First Video

No questions in the first video, but just Rena talking about Kingyo.
She talks about the story hidden behind the photos.
All the PB is about the hypothesis of her life if she didn’t become an Idol.
She’s a University student, working part time in a bookstore, sometimes feeling lonely and confused about her future.
She suggests to look closely to details, so that we can notice things like her reading a magazine about Shinkansen, or that there are photos implying she skipped her work.

Then…On G+ she asked everyone what was their favourite and their least favourite photo. Apparently a lot of people said they like the pic with her in the bookstore holding clumslily to a huge pile of books. As for the disliked photos…A lot of comments said that they didn’t like the photos exposing too much her body.
Reading that I felt how much a lot of Rena fans share the same feelings towards her, because it’s the same for me. If it was for me, I wouldn’t even want bikini photos, so…LOL
But she wants to reassure everyone because it’s not like the PB somehow wants to aim at something, having also sexy shots, but photos showing also the part of her chest are mostly intended to show Rena’s collar-bone, which is also a part of herself she came to like a lot lately so probably she was also happy about showing it.


Second Video

(0:37) Q: Are there suppin (without makeup) photos among the ones of Kingyo? What would you think about releasing a Suppin PB?

A: Uhm, there’s one when I’m without eye-makeup. But I still have foundation hiding my troublesome imperfections. I guess it’s the photo in which I’m waking up.


(1:05) Q: There’s a pic in which you’re eating Napolitan. I think it would be dangerous to eat Napolitan wearing a white shirt, one should be really careful. I wonder if you were able to take that photo at the first attempt, and how did you do that.

A: Yeah, there’s this pic in which I ear Napolitan wearing a white shirt and I’ve got tomato on myself, on the part of the chest. But actually it’s not that I got dirty while eating, I purposely put it on the shirt. So, more than being okay at the first attempt, I smashed the tomato in one shot! Something like that.


(1:53) Q: During the photo shooting, what was the most enjoyable thing you experienced? And the most troublesome?

A: As for the most enjoyable moment, it’s about the pic on the last page. I was in Arakawa’s embankment, and from there I was able to see a wonderful setting sun. It was really fun to watch it, and even the staff members looked so happy.
The most troublesome was…The very first taken photo. I was wearing a red turtle neck and a red skirt, I met the cameraman, we exchanged a very light greeting and then the staff members weren’t saying a word anymore and the PB shooting started in a so serious way that suddenly I felt like I couldn’t even distinguish right from left, it was scary. So it all started with me feeling very nervous, but those feelings kept decreasing as the shooting proceeded, so in the end it was all very enjoyable.


(3:14) Q: The PB shootings took three months. Did you change your opinion about being photographed? Is this, afterall, something you can’t get used to?

A: Uhm, yeah, something actually changed. I tried to look at the camera, pretending it wasn’t a camera. I imagined it as a person’s eyes, for example, or a wall. I learnt that I can avoid putting too much power in the eyes, and to keep natural expressions if I just think that the camera is a room’s wall.


(3:58) Q: Did you already give the present to Airin? Well, she said she’d still buy it by herself.


A: Actually, I’m yet to give it to her. You know, until now I’ve received only a copy for me, but I’ll be receiving also copies to give to the members soon. When it happens I’ll give it to them.


(4:58) Q: If there was a clumsy episode or something during the photo shooting, please tell us.

A: You know, there’s a picture in which I’m sleeping inside a taxi. Actually, it wasn’t planned that I had to sleep.  (LOL does this mean she fell asleep? )


(5:36) Q: When it was decided that you’d be releasing the PB, how did you felt?

A: I thought it was a joke.


(5:45) Q: I like the “just woken up” photo. You really just woke up there, right?

A: Yeah, that’s real. By the way, I think that my just woken up face is on the bad side, but yeah, I’m really like that when I just wake up.


(7:02) Q: What was the most embarrassing thing during the shooting?

A: It was when I was rolling down on Arakawa’s embankment, a group of high school girls passed by on their bicycles and they said something like “OMG that person is rolling”.


(7:48) Q: What were you thinking inside the pipe?

A: You know, when I was inside the pipe it was like 3PM. If I think about when I was a student, inside me the time period from 3 to 5 PM is somehow painful, I’ve got a kind of depressing impression about it. So I was thinking about depressing and melancholic things.

Not sure if this vid has been posted before, but I'll post it again. It's a Rena/Churi talk from a Shukan AKB DVD. mahoushoujoari made a translation of this 20-min video and I just thought I'd share it because I haven't seen much interaction between these two so I was a bit surprised with how it went. Somehow, it turned into an 'I-like-you-do-you-like-me-too? ' confession conversation. Funny, cute, and awkward all at the same time, especially the ending.

About the Talk

Rena: What did you think when they told you that we had to do this talk?
Akane: Well…the word “Talk” is really approximate so at first I wondered what we should’ve talked about…But lately we started to talk more often so I thought we would be able to have a fun conversation. What do you think?
Rena: Ah, but this atmosphere just now doesn’t seem to be the kind of atmosphere where one can have a fun conversation. I wondered if we would be able to have a real serious conversation, but now I got embarrassed and I don’t know what to do…It’s that…there are moments in which we talk alone with just another member, but it happens very occasionally.
Akane: That’s true.
Rena: We always end up talking about trivial things, so now it feels strange!
Akane: Yeah, strange! How will this turn out?
Rena: I have no idea! But I look forward to it.
Akane: Yeah, me too. Let’s have fun!

Your first encounter


Rena: Do you remember when we met for the first time?
Akane: Do you mean the exact moment? Do you remember it?
Rena: I don’t!
Akane: I don’t remember it too…! At first, you know, I entered as a 2nd generation member, there were a lot of senpais, and also a lot of other 2nd gen members, and initially I really couldn’t understand who was who!
Rena: Yeah, to be honest it’s really like that, right?
Akane: You know when the 2nd gen. members went to greet the 1st gen. members, and it was somehow similar to a school lesson? I didn’t get in time for that, so I didn’t partecipate to the very first greeting.
Rena: I don’t even remember if I was there.
Akane: Are you serious? That could mean that maybe you actually weren’t there!
Rena: Maybe…but I don’t know.
Akane: Now that I think about it I guess that maybe we properly met during the practise lessons for the first concert. At least, that could be a hypothesis…
Rena: Hypothesis!? You know…I’m sorry for what I’m going to say but…the first memory of me and you together that I have…is from Aozora Kataomoi!!
Akane: Yeah, that!!
Rena: You too?
Akane: I remember that very clearly!!
Rena: Yeah! Before that, being from different Teams, having to take separate lessons, even if there was that concert, at that time almost everything was performed by Team S, and Team KII’s members had…what? One or two songs, right?
Akane: Two or three, if I remember correctly.
Rena: It was more like  “presentation”, for KII, at that time.
Akane: Yeah, that’s right.
Rena: That’s why, I don’t really have particular impressions about that…
Akane: Yeah…
Rena: Even if I try to remember, the only thing that comes up is Aozora Kataomoi!
Akane: You know, the very first S members that left an impression on me were only Jurina-san and Masana-san. During the first lesson together, Jurina came to me and asked my name, then screamed and hugged me. I clearly remember that. At that time, I wasn’t feeling very well so I took a break inside Team S’ dressing room. I remember an undefined number of members caring about me like putting something on me. Were you one of those members, Rena-san?
Rena: I don’t think so. I know nothing about that episode, so I guess I wasn’t there. What I remember is that Churi, you were wearing something pea-green. Trousers, if I remember well.
Akane: Ahhh! Yeah, trousers, I’m still using those!!
Rena: Right! I remember you wearing those pea-green trousers during the lesson, having something like a ponytail and dancing frantically. I was watching you from this distance!!

Rena: I remember how I watched carefully all the time! I think that was probably a lesson for that concert!

Rena: So now I wonder if the first memory is that, or…Aozora Kataomoi! I’m really cruel, aren’t I?

Akane: My impression of you hasn’t changed a lot, but our relationship changed, in a good way.

Akane: From Aozora Kataomoi I clearly remember Rena-san as the one who pulled everyone together, being very reliable and putting everything in order. I still think those things about you, but I also think that now the ones “pulling everyone” and the ones “being pulled” are connected in a very good sense.
Rena: As for Churi, I think that you became one of the members pulling everyone else.
Akane: You mean I changed since the beginning?
Rena: Yeah, if I have to say on what side you are, I’d say the one pulling others.
Akane: Really?
Rena: Since you became Team KII’s leader my impression of you started changing a lot. Until that I felt like you were on the same level of everyone else, just going forward all together, but then I think it changed after you became the leader. It’s not the kind of pulling hard, you just stand in the front inciting everyone to work together. So, somehow, more than forcely pulling them, it’s more as if you hold them back softly.
Akane: Pulling like that and then holding them back, something like this.
Rena: Yeah! I think you’ve become like that.
Akane: Uhm, at the time of Aozora Kataomoi you were pulling everyone, and now as a Team leader I have the duty of pulling the members, but you know, when I was in senbatsu, I found it very enjoyable to be pulled by you and having to follow you.
Rena: Enjoyable!?
Akane: Well, more than that, I really learned a lot. I also remember that, just after the senbatsu thing started, there was your birthday, and I mailed you!
Rena: Ah, I remember that!!
Akane: I sent the mail talking also about how it was for KII and you replied saying you were so happy, and we exchanged other mails after that. I felt somehow relieved.
Rena: I remember receiving a very long mail! But you know, I really don’t have any intention of pulling others.

Rena: During the senbatsu, for the dancing part the ones pulling everyone are Jurina and Mii, those who are good at dancing. So, yeah, I’m not sure about my position.
Akane: Aren’t you somehow the mediator?
Rena: I wonder…Still, I don’t have that intention either…


Roles as SKE48 and Teams members


Rena: Ah, they often ask these kind of questions during interviews, right?
Akane: Yeah!
Rena: Like “What kind of position do you think you have inside SKE?”
Akane: Just like…the one in charge of the laughing part. Uhm, we really aren’t the kind of people that firmly take decisions…
Rena: Yeah, I think we’re not!
Akane: But actually, being a leader or a mediator, it’s something done in the rear, right? Not in the front.
Rena: Yeah, but…really, I don’t think I’m mediating anything!! I really don’t get my position! Some time ago, I was asked “What kind of position do you think you have among the members?” and I answered “I’m a member”. And I was very serious!! I AM a member, I’m not a leader, we have Rika-chan for that in Team S. When we’re in senbatsu we don’t decide any leader, so…And if I have to choose, I’d say that the ones pulling the other members are Jurina and Mii. I have the impression that the best dancers are pulling everyone.
Akane: Maybe you put everyone in order when they’re losing theirselves while being pulled, something like that!
Rena: Like an enclosure? Am I SKE’s enclosure!?
Akane: Isn’t that good??
Rena: That would be too frail!
Akane: When it becomes too hard, I’d hug you  from the back!
Rena: Ah, so there’s an even bigger enclosure!!

Rena: You know, I think that Churi has got a lot of qualities that I don’t have. I really love how you express yourself when you stand on the stage. So yeah, I think you possess something I don’t. Everytime I watch the recordings you’re always so steady! Steadily cute! And it’s not like you’re just laughing or something. I always watch the monitor like this thinking about how you’re great!
Akane: I never knew it!!
Rena: Well, I’m saying it for the first time!
Akane: I never knew it! What’s this? It’s embarassing!　I also think that Rena-san is full of qualities. You’re slender, delicate…
Rena: No, no, no, no, no. That’s not true.
Akane: Also, even if I’m able to focus on a single thing, when it comes to blogs…I just update when I find the time, and it also happens that I end up sleeping while we’re going somewhere or something, and then I see you, that are always absolutely writing down on your blog, and  I really feel that you treasure your fans a lot. Being charmed by that, I also have the feeling that among your fans there are a lot of people who really, really trasure you.
Rena: Eh? I’m being treasured?
Akane: Yeah, they’re surrounding you.
Rena: So I’m being surrounded by fans too!! SKE is all about enclosing, uh?
Akane: But you’re surrounded by gentle people.


A Shuuroku AKB episode that left an impression on you.


Akane: I’ve been in a lot of episode but, you know, I even had the pleasure to appear in the very first one.
Rena: That’s true!
Akane: Were we together?
Rena: No, I wasn’t there! Probably it was Jurina!
Akane: Ah, Jurina? So, I went with Jurina, Airin and other members, and the first set was a super cute classroom. I watched other episodes and they even used that room to take tests and thing like that.
Rena: That was painful, right?
Akane: Yeah, I took a test and was mocked  a lot by fans!　I thought it was a very particular show. Using a school was an original idea, I think.
Rena: I…
Akane: As for you, I have the spicy food image…
Rena: That! Yeah, a lot of people tell me that. I’d like to do it again.
Akane: I wouldn’t mind doing it with you.
Rena: I really think it would be great to do that again and I want to, but you know, I also think that through Shuukan AKB I became stronger spiritually!
Akane: So you’ve been able to grow!
Rena: Exactly! You know, eating all that super spicy food, I also did the tour around the world, I’ve eaten strange things, and also had to catch an apple inside the water by going inside with my face.

Akane: You know we did those athletic tournaments and things like that? And…I really had fun!

Akane: I really had fun, but it was also very frustrating, so I’d like to do something like that again, something related to sports!

なんかコメントをすることに必死になっている方がたくさんいるなと感じたんです。
It’s just that I noticed that there are people that are just desperate when it comes to comment.
コメントをしたいのにできない方がいるにもかかわらず、一文字だけのコメントがあったり、内容に関係なく「コメントできた」的なものがあるのをみて、私は図々しくも「それは違うんじゃないかな」と思ってしまって。
Seeing that, in spite of the people wanting to comment but that are not able to do it, there are comments with just one character, or with contents that have nothing to do with the post, like “I was able to comment”, I shamelessly thought “No, that’s not right!!”.

I’m happy to see comments. But if you ask me why am I happy, that’s because we can read reactions to what we’ve just wrote.

会話をしていて「面白いね」と行ったのに「こんにちは」と言われたような話しのかみ合わなさは寂しいです。
If I try to put on something like a conversation saying something like “It’s fun, isn’t it?” and then I get “Hi!” as a reply, that doesn’t make sense, it’s sad.

I think it's really brave of her to address these kinds of topic with her fans. She must know that she's risking getting the ire of many people and losing fan support, but that doesn't stop her from expressing what's on her mind. 

Actually, it kinda puts more light into Churi's comment in their Shukan talk about how Rena '...put everyone in order when they’re losing theirselves...'. From what I've seen from her posts, she's definitely not the leader-type within the group, but she does provide that leveling perspective right when it's needed the most.
