Today, January 17th is an unforgettable day as well as a day that shouldn't be forgotten.

It was a night where the candle's flame left a strong impression in that darkness.

My 3 year old self had no idea that there had been an earthquake with such force that it was later given the name "The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Disaster".

I'd like to write about what little I can remember about such a large earthquake.

Just as morning was approaching, the tableware in the living room scattered all around and became a complete mess.

Yuka was pinned underneath a bookshelf.
I remember numerous books fell onto my upper body and a large cut was made on my forehead.

If this had been something heavier...; I shudder just from wondering.

When you go to sleep, is there any furniture that may fall on your head?
Please properly strap down anything that could fall!

The image of Kobe's streets after the electricity came back.
The highways that had crumbled. The houses that had collapsed. The flames that were brightly burning.
The rescue teams that were running around.
The aftershocks that occurred many times.
And the astounded voices of the reporters.

I distinctly remember feeling an unusual sense of fear from the live broadcast, even though I was so small at the time.

16 years later
The streets have been beautifully reborn haven't they.

But
the scars in the hearts of those who lost parents or children, important friends or family, will never disappear.

I think the lives lost from naturally occurring disasters had nowhere to run to and are regretful and sorrowed.
The only thing we can do is simply, doing what we can to be able to run away whenever an earthquake may come.

You may think "You're so serious..", but when a disaster occurs, in that moment you can't do anything at all.

but it's because today is such an important day.
