Zhang Ziyi Mixes Happy and Sad in 'Tale of Magic'
2010-09-27 16:43:04     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Xie Tingting

The first trailer from Gu Changwei's HIV-focused drama "A Tale of Magic" ("Moshu Waizhuan"), starring Zhang Ziyi and Aaron Kwok, has set a sad tone for the movie.

In the trailer, Qinqin (Zhang Ziyi) appears in Chinese red, hinting at an ongoing wedding. She repeatedly announces she and Deyi (Aaron Kwok) "have voluntarily married each other." She at first seems extremely happy, and then suddenly starts to weep. Her emotions are shared by Deyi, who looks at her with obvious love in his eyes.

"A Tale of Magic" is set in an isolated Chinese village which suffers from the rapid spread of HIV as a result of the blood trade. Infected villagers live together in an abandoned school. Deyi and Qinqin, each married and then abandoned by their spouses because of their illness, move into the school and later fall in love.

The film is slated for release in December.

Director Gu Changwei won a Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival for his directorial debut, "Peacock" ("Kongque"). His work as a cinematographer on "Farewell My Concubine" ("Bawang Bie Ji"), directed by Chen Kaige, earned Gu an Oscar nomination.

Zhang Ziyi to Host Hundred Flowers Awards: Report
2010-10-11 15:26:56     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Xie Tingting

Although not nominated at the 2010 Hundred Flowers Awards, Zhang Ziyi will still take center stage at the Oct. 16 event as its host, domestic media reported.

The actress will take on her first ever hosting gig with Tu Jingwei and Tao Ching-Ying, the Chongqing Evening News reported, citing unnamed insiders.

Zhang won a Hundred Flowers Award for Best Actress in 2000 for her big-screen debut in "The Road Home" ("Wo De Fuqin Muqin").

Competing for this year's Best Actress award are Zhao Wei ("Mulan"), Zhou Xun ("Painted Skin"), Shu Qi ("If You Are the One"), Fan Bingbing ("Bodyguards and Assassins"), and Bai Jing ("Iron Man").

Up in the Best Actor category are Chen Kun ("Painted Skin"), Zhang Guoli ("The Founding of a Republic"), Huang Xiaoming ("The Message"), Donnie Yen ("Ip Man"), and Hou Yong ("Jing Tian Dong Di").

"The Founding of a Republic" is leading early voting for the award of Best Film.

Winners will be announced at the closing ceremony of the 19th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Festival.

The festival will open Tuesday, Oct. 12 in Jiangyin, a small city in eastern China's Jiangsu Province. The media predicted a lackluster opening, as Jiangyin has no airport.

It is tradition for the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Festival, one of the biggest film events in China, to be held in a different host city each year.

Zhang Ziyi Named CineAsia's Actress of the Decade

Zhang Ziyi has been named Actress of the Decade by CineAsia at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

The actress says she is very thankful to those directors she has cooperated with, and talks about her feeling of being a film producer.

"It's very tough to be a producer. But gradually, there might be a trend for actors to produce different types of film, character or different styles of film. Lots of things had changed over ten years. I believe as a professional actor or filmmaker, my passion for film and curiosity to character never changes."

Zhang recently finished shooting Gu Changwei's AIDS-focused drama "A Tale of Magic " ("Mo Shu Wai Zhuan") and is expected to film an English version of the Chinese classic tale Hua Mulan.

Director Feng Xiaogang ("Aftershock") was also honored as Filmmaker of the Decade at the three-day industry event.

The two award winners worked together in 2006 when Zhang Ziyi took the lead character in Feng's "The Banquet" ("Ye Yan").

Good news for us guys. :)

Her movies are the top priority for the 31-year-old actress now.
Eleven years ago, Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) received the CineAsia Emerging Talent of the Year.
At the CineAsia 2010 Awards Thursday, where she was crowned Actress of the Decade, Zhang Ziyi admitted, for the first time, her split from boyfriend, Vivi Nevo.
When the media inquired Zhang Ziyi on her break-up with Vivi, the actress, decked in a red and black toga dress, smiled and did not make any denial. She also added that the media were more interested in her personal life than her movies.
What about the rumour that she was getting back with Eric Fok?
Zhang Ziyi said she and Eric have always been good friends and expressed that she had no idea who was spreading the rumour. The actress later added that she no longer contacts Eric.
“Do you want us to get back together?” Zhang Ziyi questioned the reporters instead when asked if there was a chance of furthering the relationship.
“I haven’t had time to consider the question. It had been a busy year for me. I’m putting my concentration on my movies now. After all, you cannot force a relationship (to happen),” said the 31-year-old actress.

Looking super in the pics from the show. :inlove:

I found Ziyi's beauty complicated. She's beauty but she's too skinny also.

The pics of her as a geisha are beautiful!

agreed! she needs more meat! mmmm...  memoirs of a geisha was a pretty good movie. i actually bought it.  i heard the book was better though.

as an asian-american...rush hour 2=all time favorite. my high school mandarin teacher used to play it all the time.  don't argue, there was educational value!

I had no idea she did humanitarian work... is it me or does she seem like she would do a peta ad?

Zhang Ziyi's New Movie 'Mulan' Releases Poster
    2011-02-12 15:19:43     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Duanlei

The first poster for the Hollywood-made Chinese folk story "Mulan" has been released.

The name of the film will be called "Mulan, the Legend of a Woman Warrior" ("Jin Guo Ying Xiong"). The face of the heroine Hua Mulan, played by Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, features on the left of the poster. And a perspective of a war field is on the right, indicating it's a story about war.

The film is adapted from a famous Chinese folk story dating back in the 6th century. It tells of a young woman who replaces her father to fight in the all-male army. The story was put on the big screen by Disney in an animated version in 1998, which made it famous worldwide.
And in 2009, a Chinese-language version of the story was released with actress Zhao Wei starring as the lead character Hua Mulan.

Now the story will be brought back to the big screen again in 3-D. "Speed" director Jan de Bont will create an English-language version. Apart from actress Zhang Ziyi, details about the cast have yet to be announced.

Chinese celebrity Zhang Ziyi attended a promotional activity for Ferragamo, a fashion brand, on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the ongoing Milan Fashion Week autumn/winter 2011. Wearing a clean-cut suit of the brand, Zhang was invited to watch the show from backstage instead of from the front rows, which gave her a very refreshing feeling, she said. The noted film star has collaborated with Ferragamo a couple of times before. [Photo: xinhuanet.com]

Director Gu Changwei's new film "Life Is a Miracle" ("Zui Ai"), starring Zhang Ziyi and Aaron Kwok as an HIV-infected couple, will open in China on May 10, Sina.com.cn reports.

In the film, set in a Chinese village where the deadly virus is spreading rapidly as a result of illegal blood sales, Qinqin (Zhang) and Deyi (Kwok) are both estranged from their families because of their disease and are eventually brought together by their shared misfortune.

Gu, whose directorial debut "Peacock" ("Kong Que") won a Silver Bear Award at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival, said he had invited a number of HIV-positive people to join his new movie and hoped it would raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and discrimination against the disease.

While making the film, Gu and Zhao Liang, another director, completed an HIV/AIDS-themed documentary called "Together" ("Zai Yi Qi").

Powerful shit!!

One of the most beautiful women in the world.  Absolutely stunning.  She had a great role in 2046, but I haven't seen her in anything recently.

Just viewed her 2009 film Sophie's Choice which was a real entertaining watch, :) it's a romantic comedy, it was good to see her do something a bit different and finally a film that's set in modern times, I would recommend it. :thumbsup
