I couldn't find a more generic question and answers thread regarding JPop or idols as a whole so I guess this is the next best spot to ask it. It is related to AKB48 though.

I obviously know that Aki-P writes all the lyrics to the songs for AKB48, but how is it for other groups based around idols. Do the members write songs or do they just perform them? I have been really curious about this lately since I recently discovered that most Japanese idols are really there only to look good.

Do other musical artists that are not considered to be idols in JPop write their own songs? I don't mean groups like the B'z, since they are more rock oriented. I was thinking more of the solo JPop artists like Hamasaki Ayumi. I know she writes her own songs, but what about others that fit into her same musical genre as her? Is she just one of the rare performers in JPop that writes and performs or is it a common thing like in the United States?

Also, how do former idols that stay in the music industry fit into all of this? Do they end up writing their own songs or do they still only perform them?

One last question that is a little more specific. Itano Tomomi is in a unique position in that she is a solo artist as well as a member of AKB48. Dos she write her own songs for her solo album/s or just perform them?

Sorry if there is a lot here, but I figured multiple posts would be considered spam and thanks in advance for the answers.

^ A search of the Android market turns up quite a number; whether or not they're official is up to you to decide. The ones from CYBIRD are definitely real though.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm gonna try and answer these one-by-one as best as I can; others please correct any wrong statements.

I obviously know that Aki-P writes all the lyrics to the songs for AKB48, but how is it for other groups based around idols. Do the members write songs or do they just perform them?
I'm not sure about the more underground idols, but in general, mainstream female idols don't write their own songs/lyrics. Taking the 'big names' (AKB, Morning Musume, etc.) as an example, they're usually taken under the wing of a producer and given songs to perform. Now, there are cases where a member within the group may decide to write his/her own songs (ex-AKB member Hoshino Michiru, for example), but for the most part, it's written by someone else.

This is a lot harder to say definitely, since nowadays there are more and more artists in the Japanese musical world today that write their own material (Kobukuro, Ayaka, Otsuka Ai, etc.). I think it's become more of a global trend that artists that write their own material tend to be valued more highly, so it's not necessarily just the US where this is more common.

Also, how do former idols that stay in the music industry fit into all of this? Do they end up writing their own songs or do they still only perform them?
I'm going to bring up Hoshino Michiru again for this, but she's still in the industry writing her own music. On the flip side, another ex-AKB member Oshima Mai is currently signed under Avex and has 3 solo singles since leaving AKB; but none of those songs were written by her. I guess it just depends on whether that former idol has shown that potential of composing/writing his/her own songs.

One last question that is a little more specific. Itano Tomomi is in a unique position in that she is a solo artist as well as a member of AKB48. Dos she write her own songs for her solo album/s or just perform them?
She does not. All of her solo lyrics (as well as Maeda Atsuko, who is also in the same position) is also written by Akimoto Yasushi.

Just wanted to add on the subject of non-idols in JPop
Do other musical artists that are not considered to be idols in JPop write their own songs?
Perfume, for example, doesn't write their own music, but I read a translated bit where Perfume's A~Chan asked their producer if they could finally write their own piece.

I don't understand the oshimen thing

As in "Are you really a fan of AKB48, or only the oshimen?" and "If your oshimen graduates, will you cease being a fan of AKB48 altogether?"

Asking only because in H!P's world, being a fan of only 1-3 group members instead of the whole unit collectively is greatly frowned upon

For a discussion on oshimen, see: http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=29604.0 - Feel free to ask in there :jphip:

But for me anyway, even if Mayu left AKB, it would be business as usual for me, and I imagine the same to be true for most others here (I hope).

Me has another question

Has AKB got any vinyl records? I know Momoclo & Morning Musume are examples of idol groups who have them

I was wondering if there will be more Team A, K, and B stages recordings? Now that the members are too busy with other activities. I'd love to see new unit performance.

Is there any sort of resource that explains where the various AKB/SKE girls nicknames came from?  Some are easy to figure out but some not so much and most bio's don't really explain the girls nicknames (and some don't even list them at all).

In particular I want to find out where Yuko got the nickname Korisu, Aika got the nickname Rabutan, Akane got the nickname Churi and Miori got the nickname Fresh Lemon.

^Don't know of any one spot, probably need to search the nets.

For Yuko. The net says her early Yukorin/Ko-rin nickname was because her and Ogura Yuko's name and look were similar.
It then evolved to Korisu from her squirrel impersonation.

Lovetan is probably from the "Ai" in "Aika" switched to "Love". Rabutan is the engrish version.

Churi should be from Akane's bird-loving, and going all "churi churi" in her bird-impersonations. :)

Miori's "Fresh Lemon"nickname comes from her lemon collecting.
The nickname got popular later when she kept saying the "I want to become a fresh lemon" line in the 101111 episode of Ariyoshi AKB Kyowakoku.
I originally thought it was just from the script of that ep, but it was already used before that. Which I find scary because she might really want to be a lemon....

Hello-hello, I was looking through some tumblr pics and I stumbled across these posts.

Anyone has an idea from where it's from? A CM maybe?
By the looks of Yuko's long hair I'm guessing it's from last year-ish?  :?

Yes, eventually. However, I wouldn't hold my breath. A6, K6 and B5 are still running, so it'll be quite a while before the new stages will be announced and the albums will be released.
