SCANDAL Interview

"While we were recording last year, we were asked if we wanted to try out for the opening theme for "Bleach." Mami was especially a huge fan of "Bleach," so we immediately started to work on it. There were apparently many other candidate artists, so we felt very honored and happy when our song was chosen." - SCANDAL When you think of the word "scandal" the first thing that pops into your mind probably isn't an all girl band from Japan, unless you are a huge fan of the anime series "Bleach" that is. Coming from a music industry somewhat notorious for manufacturing groups, our first look at this high school uniform wearing band made us wonder... until we listened to their music.

With full throttle songs like Shojo S, Tokyo and Space Ranger these four musicians from Osaka have managed to create a beautifully sexy moe inducing appearance with all its obvious commercial appeal while keeping their identity as a rock band to be taken seriously. Their first full length album "Best Scandal" will be released in Japan on October 21. On September 1, 2009 the members of SCANDAL were kind enough to give an interview to Andrew from J-Pop World. All photos courtesy of 2009 EPIC Records Japan Inc.

Let's start with the news of your upcoming single. Can you give us a peak at the title and what songs will be included?

We will be releasing our new single "Yumemiru Tsubasa" on October 14th. It's been almost a year since our debut, and this song is about our feeling towards our dream. This became a very important song for us. The single also includes "BEAUTeen!!" which was recently released digitally, and also "Day Dream," a cover song of Judy and Mary.

Will any of the music be featured on an anime series or somewhere else?

Not at the moment.

Have you already shot a music video to go with the single? Can you tell us about it?

Yes, we've already shot the video. The shooting started very early in the morning and it was really hot during the day, but it was very fun!

Can fans hope to see SCANDAL's first full length album in the near future?

We're currently working on it. We hope to release it this year.

You released your previous single, "Shojo S," back in June. Shojo S really is a great song. Can you tell us more about it?

The "S" stands for "s" as in plural in English. (Shojo means girl: Shojo S = girls.) This song is about the screaming voices of the girls. The composer of this song is Yuichi Tajika.

The video for the song features the four of you performing in the rain, highlighted by a great visual transition to a sunny day. What was it like shooting it?

Shooting in the rain for 3 hours was very tough... But we really like how it came out.

Who is the guy in the video and what exactly is he doing and saying?

He's a famous comedian called Junichi Koumoto (from the duo Jicho Kacho), and he's playing the janitor role, telling us to go home.

Shojo S was of course featured in the anime series "Bleach." Can you tell us the story of how that happened?

While we were recording last year, we were asked if we wanted to try out for the opening theme for "Bleach." Mami was especially a huge fan of "Bleach," so we immediately started to work on it. There were apparently many other candidate artists, so we felt very honored and happy when our song was chosen.

Btw, do any of you have a favorite anime or manga series?

We all like "Bleach," "One Peace," and "K-On!"

Your website features anime shorts about the group. Can you tell us about doing the voice-overs for them?

Some of those lines are actually ad-libs, and we had lots of fun doing it.

Have you done voice acting for any other anime shows, or have a desire to in the future?

Not yet, but we would be interested in doing it in the future. Especially Mami!

The level of energy in your stage shows is impressive. We have to ask... which one of you can jump the highest with your guitar?

It's not about the competition. It's about what kind of spirit you have, and how cool you can jump!

Good answer! Your song Koi Moyo was featured in the movie "Corazon de Melon." What did you think about making a song for a movie staring Takanori Nishikawa aka TM Revolution?! (Did you get to meet him btw?)

Actually, the song existed before the movie. And yes, we were able to meet Nishikawa-san during the stage greetings. We were all very excited to meet him!

In March of last year you were part of the "Japan Nite 2008" US Tour. How was it?

It was actually our first time to even go on a tour, so there were many things that we didn't know, but it was such a great experience to perform every day in different cities.

Did you have any major worries or concerns about coming to the US before the tour started?

It was our first time to travel outside of Japan, so we were worried about the different language and the food culture.

What were your lasting memories of the trip?

We didn't think that there would be any audience in the U.S., but we were very happy that many fans gave us a very warm welcome. We feel very thankful.

Any plans on another North American tour?

Not yet, but we are always talking about how we would love to go back. Please invite us!

Let's learn more about the origin of the band. Can you tell us the story of how you all meet and started SCANDAL?

We met at a dance/vocal school in Osaka. The teacher there recommended us to play an instrument, and that's how we got started.

How did you find the time to be in a band while still attending high school?

We practiced after school was over. We sometimes even went on a practice camp during vacation since some of us lived far away and it was difficult for all of us to meet up.

Tell us about your first performances at Shibuya Club Asia and its importance to your career.

We were all too nervous, and don't remember anything... But that was a very important show because all the people from the record company and the management were at that show, which eventually led to our debut.

Btw do you know the members of Oreskaband?

Yes, we're good friends with them. We'd go see their show, and they'd come see ours!

Do you write most of your music and lyrics yourself, or do you use other songwriters?

The music is written by other songwriters, but we all write the lyrics together.

Do you have nicknames for each other? What do you usually call each other?

We would call each other in shortened names. Like we would call Haruna as "Haru" and Tomomi as "Tomo."

Which of you would you say is the most outgoing? The shyest?

We're all shy (smiles).

Outside of music, what do you all like to do for fun?

Food, clothes and watching movies. Talking about comedians is also a common topic for all of us.

Do you have a final message to all your fans?

How are you America!? We will be releasing our new single in October, and we are also currently working on our album too. We'd love to come back to the U.S. again, and we really appreciate all your support!

Boy do I got a lot of these.  :nervous

A CD Data issue from I dunno when, sometime this past year:

Some unknown magazine, I found this... through Google Japan?  :nervous

Then some kind of Myspace thing?

And now something I found on SCANDAL's Sushi last night, from a magazine called "Re:spect":

And now for the interviews!  :nervous Beware, some aren't in nice English... Kanji+Hira+Kana.... >_< But I thought I'd share 'em nonetheless, since in the future somebody might translate 'em. I might try to, I've got the first few lines of the Lighthouse interview down, but yeah. ^.^;

From US Lighthouse http://www.us-lighthouse.com/ustrend/e-7316.html

I have more, but I don't have the time right now to find 'em. Later on I'll post more~  ;)

If you wanna see the set, I can PM it to you~ I just don't want to post it cuz it's not my work, don't want any confusion. But it's awesome.  :inlove:

And yes! I can't wait any longer, either. The suspense is killing me, and... argh. Should YesAsia's status on my preorder still read "Processing"? I'm getting kinda worried...  :huhuh

You're welcome guys and yuup like lambchopsuey said it's on their myspace as well :w00t:

oho~ I wanted to find more interviews and helllooo~ I bumped into their interview they had in France :'D
It's subbed in french though o.o

http://www.asia-tik.com/interview-scandal.php

But from what I know, here's a rough translation of what they say [meaning I translate word for word and put them together lol.]. Although it's not 100% accurate, I still have the general idea on what they're saying so I apologize for any mistakes. I am rusty XD
So feel free to put this up on a separate window and scroll through the texts while the vid plays~

SCANDAL at Japan Expo - Friday July 4th '08

For a start, can we ask you to introduce yourselves? [Somewhere along those lines.]

M: My name is Mami and I'm the guitarist. It's nice to meet you.
T: My name is Tomomi and I'm the bassist. It's nice to meet you.
R: My name is Rina and I'm the drummer.
H: My name is Haruna and I'm the singer. Nice to meet you [?]

Hm, it basically asks them on how they met and how they became a band/got into music

M: The four of us all went to the same dance school, and we talked about playing instruments because we never played musical instruments before we met [?]. And we thought if we played it would be cool! [?] So we formed a group/band and we started to play.

Why did you guys choose the name "SCANDAL" to form the group?

T: It is true that the name "SCANDAL" can be 'shocking' for a group name, but before our debut, when we started to play and had a studio for rent [?] in that very studio, there was a store for adults with the name 'Scandal', and it seemed funny to have it as our group name! And even if the name can be shocking, our music isn't categorized. [I think meaning, not like the name? o.o] One is dressed in school girl clothing while the other of rock, the name of the group is SCANDAL, we are then difficult to have around. Therefore you can do what you want freely and finally, the name gives a lot of courage for the future. [?] And so we like the name very much!

In the group, who composes the music and who does the lyrics? [?]

R: As for the lyrics, we four, are in charge of it. There's a theme/One takes a theme and we write about it and then meet up to discuss on what we think is interesting for the final text. For music, there are other people who compose it, [I think she said depending on the music as well] [?] but for arrangements we try to do them little by little. And for composition, _________ [?] [Something about learning + liveliness] Therefore it can be that we will make our own music soon [?]

Which artists inspired/influenced you guy? /Which artists had the most influence/inspiration?

R: We each have different taste [in music] but we all like Sum 41.
We rented one of their dvds and watched it together and their performance on stage really surprised us. One would then want to do that on stage as well, therefore in any case the four of us adore this group.

Anime-Tik: It is true, that in connection, find the same energy as Sum 41 [I believe he/she was referring to SCANDAL]

Scandal: That pleases us, since we like to do that [?]

You have on the internet, a short anime film. Do you think you can carry out a full length film some day? [?]

Scandal: Yes, for a full length we will like very much.

M: Though on the other hand, we would like to put our own voices on the full length film, besides I even have an idea! That would be to make a concert with anime images and we would sing over it. It would be great!

August 8th is when "Yah! Yah! Yah! Hello Scandal" goes out in Japan. Can you tell us about it?

T: There will be a total of 4 titles. 3 songs are singles that we already have and the 4th, is new.

*Anime-Tik then says something about how the singles just go out of stock and are collected [?] And Tomomi agrees by saying that they heard about them already being collected...? Mami also agrees by saying that the 3 singles totally run out.

You came to carry out your first concert in France at Japan Expo, what are your impressions?

M: It is great! The french is really very "hot"!
This can be thankful [translated as grace. Like in favour of]  that our site or our page on myspace, there is people who sang with us. It was really surprising and nice at the same time. We were really touched by that because the language is different but despite that, the public reaction was really nice. When someone said "Everyone, put your hands up!" the public responded right away and that was really nice.

And that gave you the feeling of returning to France to carry out new concerts?

Scandal: Yes, we want to return to France

What are your future projects?

M: Well, right after the release of the mini album, there will be a concert at Nagoya. Plus...from August 18, we will go around/film everywhere in Japan. [?]

For you guys to know [each other] again better, could you tell us a few things about the member towards your left?

M: Well, Tomomi in Kanji, the characters tell us: To amuse/ Comfortable.
*Rina says something but no subs :shocked
M: And acutally, I understand her very very well and during shoots [film-wise I believe] and in the same room... *Mami basically says that Tomomi is funny > Cracking up jokes, etc lol*
And for me, Tomomi is a person who is very fun and very nice.
T: Well for me, Rina is very strong. She has enormous strength in her even!
R: Huh? But that's not true
T: Anyway, she has this strength in her
R: -interrupts again- XD
T: but she also has a feminine value and she is really very nice
R: Well, to say about Haruna... You can see her as a little bit shy and reserved, but actually she is very funny, she always tells jokes. And for me, she is like a big sister. She is a little bit like a leader to the group, because for example with Mami, Tomomi [it says tomoko but I'm thinking that's Tomomi O_O] and me at the same time. When someone laughs, it is Haruna that stops us, so that everyone can work. This shows us she is in a way [a leader].
H: Well, how to say... Mami in a word, is that she is very mysterious. At a start/At first, she can give the impression that she is a strange girl but actually, she is very funny and... It is impressive on how she happens to react very fast by account on what someone says.
M: Is that true?
R: Aha yea!
H: She leaves ____. but when we need to think/reflect calmy, she happens to think/reflect seriously.
M: Really?
R: Aha yea!
H: She really has two different sides in her, when she's fun, she's fun, [in other words, playful], and when you have to do a few things seriously... She puts well between the line of the two opposed attitudes.

A word for your European fans?

T: Hello, we are SCANDAL!
M: We had fortune in carrying out a concert in France and we thank you a lot for your welcome so heart-warming that you granted to us and we are upset for those who did not come to see us play at Japan Expo. But we wish to have more occasions to hold in France. on the internet, on TV, and surely through our CD. And someday, we will return to France to play again. Thank you very much.
T+R: Vive la france!
T: Merci! [Thank you in french] < LOL cuuute.
R: We like you a lot <3

---End----

Hope you guys enjoyed that :w00t:

and daww Haruna doesnt talk a lot here ><

^ Dargh. In French, no fair. I'd like to work on my French skills~ Currently in my third year of high school level, and I find it so hard to encorporate French into my everyday life. Not like Japanese.... if I was taking japanese classes, I'd have no problem.
